Editor's Notes
- Increased life time, particularly accompanied by good health is very good news, but it has to (and will) bring also changes in working lifes of people.
- Demographic changes are the most apparent in population pyramids. Here we see that in 2060 it won’t even look like a pyramid anymore. If the same middle of the tree will continue to support both ends, social and financial pressure will incerase significantly.
- Reality for Latvia is not just ageing but also shrinking of population, including shrinking of working-age population. In the end, there’s no other way than to incease employment rate.
- Decreasing education expenses – they do if expenses per child/student remains the same as before, as well as participation (%) in education remains the same. This is what happened in Latvia at the time of fiscal consolidation during economic downturn, although we would like to see improvements in this field.
- The labour market shortfall will not be offset by increasing immigration levels nor by higher fertility and productivity rates . The only way forward is more active and inclusive employment policies - as well as a change to the general mind-set - to extend working life.

- Demography – A country’s destiny? We can choose our destiny (and hopefully improve or at least maintain welfare) - not just by influencing demography but also by changing ourselves and our habits .
