What makes a good speaker? Whose ideas can I rely on? And why should I care?
These and other questions will be addressed in this talk on ‘Public Speaking’, in reference to the master of rhetoric – Aristotle. His highly influential book “Rhetoric”- published over 2000 years ago, gives the three main characteristics that any speaker must train to -eventually- become effective in the field.
The first characteristic is credibility. A good speaker, according to “Rhetoric”, is someone worth listening to. He will make you want to follow into the rabbit hole. A strong connection with the audience makes the second trait. Lastly he challenges your intellectual capacities, to follow structure and content. Only the study of all three skills will determine the effectiveness of any speech or presentation.
In the end ‘Public Speaking’ is a skill. A skill, that needs practice, the right methods and the willingness to stand up for your cause. Life is the audience – are you to be heard?
