This document summarizes a study of residential hot water use and the performance of different types of water heaters. The study monitored 10 homes with a total of 25 water heaters, including tank, non-condensing tankless, and condensing tankless models. It found that very short draws contributed little to energy use but made up a large number. Showers accounted for over half of daily hot water volume. Energy factor ratings did not always match actual in-home performance due to differences between test procedures and real-world usage patterns.
