If you have been following my blog in the past two years, you may have noticed that I am exploring ways to solve the transition from traditional, coordinated PLM processes towards future, connected PLM. In this session I shared with the audience that digital transformation is disruptive for PLM and requires thinking in two modes. Thinking in two modes is not what people like, however organization can run in two modes. In addition, I shared some examples from digital transformation stories that illustrate there was no transformation, either failure or smoke and mirrors.

In 2017, the World Economic Forum recognized the potential of advanced manufacturing technologies. In 2018, from among more than 1,000 examined production facilities, 16
companies were recognized as Fourth Industrial Revolution leaders in advanced manufacturing for demonstrating step-change results, both operational and financial, across individual sites. They had succeeded in scaling beyond the pilot phase and their sites were designated advanced manufacturing “Lighthouses”. In 2019, 28 additional facilities were identified and added to the network, which now provides an opportunity for cross-company learning and collaboration, and for setting new benchmarks for the global manufacturing community.
Lighthouses have succeeded by innovating new operating systems, including in how they manage and optimize business and processes, transforming the way people work and use technology. These new operating systems can become the blueprint for modernizing the entire company operating system; therefore, how they prepare for scaling up and engaging the workforce matters.

Digital twin concept backs to manufacturing industry in early 2000s for the PLM (Product Lifecycle Management) purposes. It is based on the idea that a digital informational construct about a physical system could be created as an entity on its own. As cities are going through digital transformation, there are many attempts to apply digital twin concept to manage urban issues. Those attempts look set to play an increasingly important role in the creation of smart cities around the world and in addressing major public health, safety and environmental issues. Bringing the virtual and real worlds together in this way can help to give better analysis, visualization, and simulation to decision-making process. This will be a multi-way process with iterative feedback among stakeholders. In this colloquium, I talked about the recent trends of Smart City from the perspective of digital twin.

Bridging the Gap: from Data Science to ProductionFlorian Wilhelm
A recent but quite common observation in industry is that although there is an overall high adoption of data science, many companies struggle to get it into production. Huge teams of well-payed data scientists often present one fancy model after the other to their managers but their proof of concepts never manifest into something business relevant. The frustration grows on both sides, managers and data scientists.
In my talk I elaborate on the many reasons why data science to production is such a hard nut to crack. I start with a taxonomy of data use cases in order to easier assess technical requirements. Based thereon, my focus lies on overcoming the two-language-problem which is Python/R loved by data scientists vs. the enterprise-established Java/Scala. From my project experiences I present three different solutions, namely 1) migrating to a single language, 2) reimplementation and 3) usage of a framework. The advantages and disadvantages of each approach is presented and general advices based on the introduced taxonomy is given.
Additionally, my talk also addresses organisational as well as problems in quality assurance and deployment. Best practices and further references are presented on a high-level in order to cover all facets of data science to production.
With my talk I hope to convey the message that breakdowns on the road from data science to production are rather the rule than the exception, so you are not alone. At the end of my talk, you will have a better understanding of why your team and you are struggling and what to do about it.

Synopsis: Cooperative information systems typically involve various entities in a collaborative process within a distributed environment. Blockchain technology offers a mechanism for automating such processes, even when only partial trust exists among participants. The data stored on the blockchain is replicated across all nodes in the network, ensuring accessibility to all participants. While this aspect facilitates traceability, integrity, and persistence, it poses challenges for adopting public blockchains in enterprise settings due to confidentiality issues. In this paper, we present a software tool named Control Access via Key Encryption (CAKE), designed to ensure data confidentiality in scenarios involving public blockchains. After outlining its core components and functionalities, we showcase the application of CAKE in the context of a real-world cyber-security project within the logistics domain.

Removing Uninteresting Bytes in Software FuzzingAftab Hussain
Imagine a world where software fuzzing, the process of mutating bytes in test seeds to uncover hidden and erroneous program behaviors, becomes faster and more effective. A lot depends on the initial seeds, which can significantly dictate the trajectory of a fuzzing campaign, particularly in terms of how long it takes to uncover interesting behaviour in your code. We introduce DIAR, a technique designed to speedup fuzzing campaigns by pinpointing and eliminating those uninteresting bytes in the seeds. Picture this: instead of wasting valuable resources on meaningless mutations in large, bloated seeds, DIAR removes the unnecessary bytes, streamlining the entire process.
In this work, we equipped AFL, a popular fuzzer, with DIAR and examined two critical Linux libraries -- Libxml's xmllint, a tool for parsing xml documents, and Binutil's readelf, an essential debugging and security analysis command-line tool used to display detailed information about ELF (Executable and Linkable Format). Our preliminary results show that AFL+DIAR does not only discover new paths more quickly but also achieves higher coverage overall. This work thus showcases how starting with lean and optimized seeds can lead to faster, more comprehensive fuzzing campaigns -- and DIAR helps you find such seeds.
