According to Senge (2010) and the Fifth Discipline: The Art and Practice of the Learning Organization, teams that learn are made up of people who “see each other as colleagues” (p. 227), “develop a deep trust” (p. 230), “seek the common denominator in multiple individual views” (p. 231), and “develop a spirit of inquiry” (p. 244). A leader who understands how to bring out the best in teams can achieve extraordinary results. Senge also stated that those in senior leadership positions have mastered the art of understanding their own leadership styles and how those affect members of their organizations. The role of leaders as designers, teachers and stewards is not a new concept to me. Other classes that I have taken in the MAOL track have discussed this very topic. I happen to agree with Senge (2006) when he discusses the different aspects of leaders being designers, teachers and stewards.
The one that particularly stood out to me is leaders as teachers. “Great teachers create space for learning and invite people into that space” (Senge, 2006, p. 329). As leaders we are always looking for areas in our organization that need improvement. From there we create the environment that allows for learning. I also latched on to the part where Senge (2006) talked about letting go of some of the control as you are leading and teaching. This is an area that I have struggled with. This quote really hit home, “How do you lead an organization of this scope and scale when you cannot be involved in everything directly?” (Senge, 2006, p. 330). Just two years ago I led a team of four people in one office at one location. I now lead a team of almost 250 people, spread out a crossed multiple cities and multiple locations. It is impossible to be involved directly with everything and as a new leader that was a tough transition for me. I still find myself having to remember that I can’t be that deeply involved, that I have to give some control up to the managers of my areas. I have to be that teacher that Senge (2006) is referring too and teach them to lead on their own.
The one point that I would say I struggled with in regards to Senge (2006) is the leaders as designers. I picked that because as I was reading over the material I kept saying that I wish I had control over how that was designed or how that piece of the organization was structured. At least in my organization that design seems to be pretty set. The decisions on that seem to come from the executive level. So I struggled with conceptualizing the designer section. I related a lot more with the teachers and stewards sections of the readings.

By following leaders at the top of their organizations, Bennis found that "such people have no interest in proving themselves, but an abiding interest in expressing themselves. The difference is crucial, for it's the difference between being driven and leading" (p. 5). With Bennis's work, the age of interviewing top leaders to gain access to how they do their work came into its own.
Charan, Drotter, and Noel's (2001) work supports the idea that a leadership base among its employees will help the organization make its selections to critical executive leadership positions, even in a large, decentralized organization. Their hierarchy is pictured by a pipeline bent in six places, each being a rise in leadership function. At the bottom, the leaders begin with managing self, then managing others, managing managers, managing functions, managing a business, a business group, and ending at managing an enterprise.
The model recognizes several potential leader failures: failing to seek or listen to feedback, identification of failures, leaving the wrong person in the job too long, poor job definition, and selecting the wrong person for the job. Organizations that do not grow their own managers tend not to know their people well enough to understand what risks they are taking when they hire or promote someone, so using a pipeline model would reduce risk in an already volatile environment. One of Northouse's (2007) criticisms of trait theory is that it fails the utility test for leadership training and development. Growing leaders from inside the organization makes sense because it reduces risk for the organization and still allows for application of trait theory in selection of leaders and skill theory in leader development programs.

Practical Approach
Authentic leadership is both a practical and theoretical approach to leadership. As a practical approach, authentic leaders are those that lead passionately and with purpose, act with self-discipline based on strong values, and create quality relationships (Northouse, 2016, p. 197). In other words, they have a vision and work diligently toward it, do what’s right, develop trusting and compassionate connections with others, and are self-driven.
Theoretical Approach
As a theoretical approach, authentic leadership is defined as “’a pattern of leadership behavior that draws upon and promotes both positive psychological capability and a positive ethical climate, to foster greater self-awareness, an internalized moral perspective, balancing processing of information, and relational transparency on the part of leaders working with followers, fostering positive self development’” (Northouse, 2016, p. 201). In other words, leaders can be authentic when they strongly aware of who they are, use ethical decision-making, consider all perspectives, and communicate openly with others.
Similarities
The similarities between the practical and theoretical approach are that both include the use of ethics, integrity, self-discipline and self-knowledge, and transparent relationships. Both view authentic leadership as an ongoing process.
Differences
The differences are that the practical approach is an intrapersonal perspective in that it outlines the qualities of authentic leaders and how to develop them. On the other hand, the theoretical approach is a developmental perspective that identifies the components that define and create authentic leadership.
Personal Meaning
When I think of authentic leadership, I think of leadership born of strong character and virtue, in the service of the common good. The idea of character meaning, “I must value my character, be invested in it, see it as an end in itself” (The Picket Line, n.d.). The practice of virtue in authentic leadership means being honest, trustworthy, diligent, responsible, humble, and just (The Picket Line, n.d.). When leadership is based on strong character and virtue it will lead to trusting and open connections with others. This is similar to the high-quality exchanges that Leader-Member Exchanges theory suggests should be developed.
Strategies
One strategy that leaders can use for authenticity is to continually seek personal mastery. Personal mastery is “a set of specific principles and practices that enables a person to learn, create a personal vision, and view the world objectively” (Grimsley, n.d.). As authentic leadership stems from knowing oneself, the discipline of personal mastery will help leaders reflect on life experiences to broaden their awareness of how things really are and to deepen their understanding of self.
Another strategy that can be used is being open to the ideas, feedback, and criticisms of others. There is much to learn if leaders can humble themselves.
Leadership in sustainable development literature review
This literature review explores leadership in sustainable development. It discusses leadership and examines what leaders are, what leaders do, and the need for leadership at every level. It looks at sustainable development from global, leadership, and implementation perspectives. It also examines organizational change and explores drivers for change, tools and techniques to create change, and characteristics of successful organizations. Building a team for a course/work project is very crucial for the success of the project and relies heavily on analyzing the goals of the project that you need to accomplish. Some of the main characteristics that are required to build a good team include:
· Stating the purpose of the project
· Charting out specific roles that can be assigned to the team members
· A leadership that is acceptable to the whole team
· Effective and seamless processes to avoid any bottle-necks in operations and communication
· Healthy relationships between the members of the team
Understanding the meaning and purpose of building teams gives us a good starting point on how to compose a team for your project (Drolet, 2004). The main purpose of group is to accomplish the set objectives for a project in the most efficient way possible. I would choose a team that consists of members that have particular skillsets that align to the necessary objectives that are to be accomplished to have a successful finish. Another important task is to elect a leadership that is both competent in carrying out the responsibility and also be acceptable to the team to follow the directions of the leader. The last and most important aspect is to manage operations in a way that all the team members feel inclusive, realize their responsibility and always stay motivated to work in the best interests of the team towards the completion of the project (Harvey, 2004). While building the team, I would consider all the above characteristics in mind and to incorporate the right diversity, I would choose talent and hard work as a key factor that aligns with the interests of the project to accomplish the set goals in the most efficient way possible.

Agency is a vague area of law whereby a person, called the "principal," makes an agreement with another person, called an "agent," to act on the principal's behalf in a legal relationship with a third person, called the "third party." As with most contractual relationships, the intent of the parties plays an enormous part in the legal outcome. For example, what if the agent, while representing the principal in a legal relationship with a third party, makes his or her own independent agreement with that third party about an unrelated matter? Is the principal entitled to the benefit of that independent agreement? What was the agent's intent? What was the third party's intent?
Public administrators may function as either agents or principals. Accordingly, a public administrator must be able to analyze a situation for agency agreements. If a public administrator cannot successfully analyze agency agreements, he or she may unknowingly create agency agreements, act inappropriately, or damage the reputation of the agency he or she is serving.

Practical Approach
Authentic leadership is both a practical and theoretical approach to leadership. As a practical approach, authentic leaders are those that lead passionately and with purpose, act with self-discipline based on strong values, and create quality relationships (Northouse, 2016, p. 197). In other words, they have a vision and work diligently toward it, do what’s right, develop trusting and compassionate connections with others, and are self-driven.
Theoretical Approach
As a theoretical approach, authentic leadership is defined as “’a pattern of leadership behavior that draws upon and promotes both positive psychological capability and a positive ethical climate, to foster greater self-awareness, an internalized moral perspective, balancing processing of information, and relational transparency on the part of leaders working with followers, fostering positive self development’” (Northouse, 2016, p. 201). In other words, leaders can be authentic when they strongly aware of who they are, use ethical decision-making, consider all perspectives, and communicate openly with others.
Similarities
The similarities between the practical and theoretical approach are that both include the use of ethics, integrity, self-discipline and self-knowledge, and transparent relationships. Both view authentic leadership as an ongoing process.
Differences
The differences are that the practical approach is an intrapersonal perspective in that it outlines the qualities of authentic leaders and how to develop them. On the other hand, the theoretical approach is a developmental perspective that identifies the components that define and create authentic leadership.
Personal Meaning
When I think of authentic leadership, I think of leadership born of strong character and virtue, in the service of the common good. The idea of character meaning, “I must value my character, be invested in it, see it as an end in itself” (The Picket Line, n.d.). The practice of virtue in authentic leadership means being honest, trustworthy, diligent, responsible, humble, and just (The Picket Line, n.d.). When leadership is based on strong character and virtue it will lead to trusting and open connections with others. This is similar to the high-quality exchanges that Leader-Member Exchanges theory suggests should be developed.
Strategies
One strategy that leaders can use for authenticity is to continually seek personal mastery. Personal mastery is “a set of specific principles and practices that enables a person to learn, create a personal vision, and view the world objectively” (Grimsley, n.d.). As authentic leadership stems from knowing oneself, the discipline of personal mastery will help leaders reflect on life experiences to broaden their awareness of how things really are and to deepen their understanding of self.
Another strategy that can be used is being open to the ideas, feedback, and criticisms of others. There is much to learn if leaders can humble themselves.
Leadership in sustainable development literature review
This literature review explores leadership in sustainable development. It discusses leadership and examines what leaders are, what leaders do, and the need for leadership at every level. It looks at sustainable development from global, leadership, and implementation perspectives. It also examines organizational change and explores drivers for change, tools and techniques to create change, and characteristics of successful organizations. The review concludes that sustainable development is the ultimate leadership challenge and requires leaders at every level to balance environmental, social and economic interests through systems thinking and collaboration.

In this article, the authors highlight multiple ethical cultures at the organizational level. They explore the dynamics of team culture as it is the basics of team building and effective team management. In addition, they suggest that team culture is different from an organizational culture based on cultural differences and similarities. Positively associated organizational outcomes such as innovation and employee well-being have been linked to cohesive ethical culture in organizations. Team ethical culture can be multidimensional based on different cultures and values. I find this article useful as it describes the different ethical cultures at the team level and its implication at the management level of the organization. This article is pertinent to my research because the authors identified the different types of ethical cultures and how they relate and factor into an overall organizational culture.

Building a team for a course/work project is very crucial for the success of the project and relies heavily on analyzing the goals of the project that you need to accomplish. Some of the main characteristics that are required to build a good team include:
· Stating the purpose of the project
· Charting out specific roles that can be assigned to the team members
· A leadership that is acceptable to the whole team
· Effective and seamless processes to avoid any bottle-necks in operations and communication
· Healthy relationships between the members of the team
Understanding the meaning and purpose of building teams gives us a good starting point on how to compose a team for your project (Drolet, 2004). The main purpose of group is to accomplish the set objectives for a project in the most efficient way possible. I would choose a team that consists of members that have particular skillsets that align to the necessary objectives that are to be accomplished to have a successful finish. Another important task is to elect a leadership that is both competent in carrying out the responsibility and also be acceptable to the team to follow the directions of the leader. The last and most important aspect is to manage operations in a way that all the team members feel inclusive, realize their responsibility and always stay motivated to work in the best interests of the team towards the completion of the project (Harvey, 2004). While building the team, I would consider all the above characteristics in mind and to incorporate the right diversity, I would choose talent and hard work as a key factor that aligns with the interests of the project to accomplish the set goals in the most efficient way possible.

Impacts of Genetic Engineering in Agriculture
Genetically modified organisms are substances whose genes get altered through genetic engineering. The process gets done with the aid of adding proteins and chemicals into the genes of the organism. Genetic engineering has been applied in both crop production and animal rearing and led to several impacts both good and bad. Different people have divergent views concerning these GMOs.
There are several advantages associated with GMOs in agriculture. First and foremost is that the crops grown are modified in such a way that they can easily resist pests meaning that the output will not be affected, and also the cost of purchasing pesticides will be foregone. Additionally, genetically modified agricultural products are adamant towards the harsh climatic conditions. In the event of lack of rain or severe rain, these crops can give a right out- put.
The out- put off these plants is assured to be large as they fail to be affected by both pests and adverse climatic conditions. Food security gets guaranteed at all times. GMO crops and animals are also well known for requiring fewer farm implements such as chemicals and time this reduces their cost of production to the farmers. Farmer’s income is thus improved day by day and also the country’s per capita income too. World's population grows at an alarming rate. Ensuring sufficient food supply to this growing population will mean constant deforestation to create more land space for farming. However, with genetically modified engineering crops and animals at hand, we are assured of more food production with less deforestation (
Godfray et al., 2010).
Eventually, deforestation gets decreased, and at the same time, global warming minimized.
Since genetically modified foods are not 100% natural, there is the need to conduct thorough testing before the release of such products. There has been a case where a product has killed people and affects much more because of not testing it before it’s discharged into the market. These products are also not safe to eat at all. Moonlighting Police Officers
Moonlighting of police officers is controversial with departments across the nation. In this week’s resource folder there are several news articles from various metropolitan areas that voice concern over the implementation and regulation of moonlighting. Of concern are the obvious factors of conflict of interest and safety.
Conflict of interest is a natural concern among police departments due to the influence and consideration private employers are given by hired public officials. In order to combat common areas which may receive extra consideration are establishments associated with after-hours entertainment and/or drinking establishments. As can be seen in the local news articles some police departments ban their officers from working for these types of businesses. In the resource folder is also the departmental regulation for Arlington, Virginia police officers desiring outside employment. Arlington prohibits police officers from working for a private security firm. However, this does not preclude the officer from working directly for a small business. Other restrictions that Arlington places on their officers includes outside work as taxi cab drivers, bar security and as debt collectors, for obvious reasons. Also contained in the resource folder for week four is an FBI bulletin containing recommended guidelines for implementing an outside employment program.
