Essay about Academic Success
Continuing Academic Success Kasey E Marsh II Gen/200 3/1/2015 Susie Holiday Continuing
Academic Success The end is near to my first class at the University of Phoenix. As I continue on
with my education, I would like to have great academic success. Academic success can be
achieved by being aware of one's goals, the writing process and the importance of critical thinking
skills. By knowing these things, I believe my academic success will be achievable. Goals Setting
goals in life is the key to my success. I feel that without goals the task you do in life has little to no
purpose. "A goal is whatever an individual is striving to accomplish in their life"(Alispahić, n.d.,
p. 197). There is a lot I would...show more content...
According to Kolb, Longest, and Jensen (2013) just spending more time at a keyboard will not
make one a better writer. The best method would be to change one's practices and strategies to
become a better writer. An example that was used was that best swimmers were not precisely the
ones who swam the most but the one who switched it up and would work on the little things. So
to become a better I plan to adapt to the writing process. Sources An enormous part that will help
my chances of academic success will be the sources the University of Phoenix has to offer. A
source, in particular that will help my educational success is the center for writing excellence.
This source helps a lot because I have never done papers in APA before. Also, the paper reviewing
services helps a lot as well to check for plagiarism and grammar mistakes. I normally don't have a
problem with math but if I need assistance the center for mathematics excellence is at my
disposal. When it comes to my career, the careers page will be valuable. I have already used it to
improve my resume. Furthermore, it will also aid me in building a cover letter, how to conduct
myself in an interview and on networking. Another source that will benefit my success is the
university's massive library. It is perfect for any research I might be considering. Phoenix connect,
is also a great resource for networking. I have been told it shouldn't matter who you know to get a
job, but

REFLECTION–ACADEMIC SKILLS
When the word reflection is mentioned, the first thought is a mirror–like image of yourself. This is
to define your own perception of the acceptable and poor quality within yourself. Taking action of
the weaknesses and developing my skills to improve me around everyone, (Stadter, 2015). Gibbs

"Experience–reflection–knowledge" Pawar and Anscombe, (2015), has mentioned Dewey (1933) is a
great example of how planning ahead is a step towards better success rather than dwelling on the past
problems. Implementing Dewey 's theory into my assignment, assisting my understanding of how to
support ideas with evidence such as deciding whether I have included all the information needed, the
author/publisher or whether I have referenced continuously throughout the assignments. When
previously writing assignments I need to consider how well it was written, learning from the
mistakes, understanding the feedbacks and setting out times to do better next time (Percival
2006). While referencing is a struggle for me to apply, Kell and Vogl (2010) stated that
overcoming referencing can be done by reading different books, journals, and articles of interest.
Subsequently, after analysing the problem, I realised I try to be a perfectionist, causing a hindrance
in producing assignments. I need to start believing in myself much more and be more inspired, as
Percival, (2006) has mentioned that "being too sensitive will block your progress", by doing
time–bound goals and starting the assignment rather than thinking about the purpose. Percival

advantage to our mindset. Realisation of putting a pen to the paper to start, a draft can be

Another Step of a Long Process: Studying English Academic writing is an art of expressing and
transforming thoughts and ideas into physical form to deliver information logically and
scientifically. This skill needs to be refined and practiced constantly regularly. After three months of
taking ESL 273, I have accumulated various experiences in writing advanced sentences and
organizing academic essays which are really necessary for me to perform well in the next English
course, ESL 5, as well as other classes. As a result, I think I am well–prepared and ready for the next
coming course ESL 5. During the ESL 273 course, one of my strengths which is the ability of using

Consequently, I did not have enough time to check and edit some minor errors existing in my essay
"Society Built our Perception and Ability" like verb tense, punctuation, and word form. This also
explains why I usually perform successfully in the grammar tests given by my teacher, but I still
repeat those grammar mistakes again in my essays. Even though those errors do not affect readers'
comprehensions but they might be distracted and thus the quality of my essay would be
diminished. To help students combat this mistake, my teacher has applied an interesting teaching
strategy which is collaborative learning. To do this, I work in pair with another friend and
exchange our writing assignments in order to check other partner's errors. I feel that this method
works really well in my case because checking my partner's mistakes has helped me to reinforce
my proofreading skill. Besides, I find out a strategy to deal with the shortage of time of an in–class
writing. To do this, I try to recheck and go over a sentence as I write to make sure it is free of
grammar and punctuation mistakes. This new approach is very compatible and essential for me in
order to be successful when I get into higher English classes like ESL 5 and EWRT 1A because I
actually check my essay three or four times before I finish it. In ESL 273, I have achieved some
specific goals in

Developing Strong Academic Study Skills
Developing strong academic study skills in Higher Education is arguably the most important area of
learning and development a student can cultivate, in order to achieve academic success. The skills
that are acquired, the learning techniques that a student refines and life learning experiences are all
going to develop into long–term career prospects and future career enhancement. Some of the key
areas for development and discussion in this essay will include note taking/essay writing, critical
thinking and analysing questions and reflective thinking skills. A major area for development and
improvement revolves around effective note taking and essay planning/writing. As a Higher
Education student you will be required to plan and produce countless essays in relation to the
course you are studying, and a key point of reference to help with this would come from "The
Guide to Learning and Study Skills for Higher Education and at Work" who give the following
advice and tips: 'Identify the purpose of the essay and who the audience (reader) is and what is
required for both – structure your work and develop your arguments/main points – proof read your
work and improve language, spelling, punctuation, grammar and style – review what you did and use
feedback to improve your essay writing for the future' (Bingham, R. and Drew, S. 2012 The guide to
learning and study skills: For higher Education and at work). With regards to effective note taking in

My Teaching Skills: My New Academic Skills
My new academic skill
The skill which I learned during this academic year was the oral presentation skill. This skill
helps to speak confidently in front of people while presenting a topic. This skill can help a person
for example like a person who is shy or not confident to speak in front of people so therefore they
can learn this skill and be full confident to present and speak among people. This skill not only
helps to speak confidently but also helps to improve the accent, grammar and vocabulary of the
person so therefore the person having this skill can easily improve himself/herself without any
support from any other person. Basically this skill helps a person to speak in a way that the
audience can understand easily and may feel involved...show more content...
In my school life I really was unconfident or shy in speaking. But after joining my Degree Entry
Program (DEP) and learning this skill I myself improved the way and became confident to share
my idea or to carry out my presentation in front of many people. I learned this skill by the
assignments given to me in my DEP by my teachers. These assignments included individual
presentations and group presentations. Firstly it was my individual presentation at first I was
nervous but after watching my classmates presentations I got motivated and carried out my
presentation. From that day onwards I felt that I am starting to learn this skill. Then after the
group presentations I believed that now I have totally adopted this skill and it was totally fun and
interesting for me to go and do more and more presentation. This skill taught me to be professional
speaker and also taught me the basic elements needed in speaking or the structure of speech. It
improved my speaking skill and took it to a whole new level. Throughout my DEP I noticed a great
improvement in my speaking skill; therefore I got better grades in my presentations. So I went on
and used this presentation during my DEP and am ready to use it in my future. Now I believe I am
ready to face future challenges in my life and become a perfect speaker in my

Effective Study Skills and Academic Performance
Introduction
Effective study skills are necessary for a college student to excel academically. The student must
develop these skills in order to retain information learned in the present for their future benefit. Study
skills can be a combination of several techniques, including time management, note–taking,
self–testing, and test–wiseness, to name a few. There is no one best way to study, therefore,
techniques can be tailored to the needs of the student to achieve the most optimal result. However,
diagnostic testing is also available to assist students in assessing their weaknesses in their learning
behaviors and study habits. Research has shown that effective study skills lead to improved
academic performance. The habits that students...show more content...
In contrast, research was conducted with college students and found a direct relationship between
amount of time studied and exam scores (Barbarick and Ippolito 2003). While the amount of time
spent studying may have an unproven impact on academic performance, it is very important to
acquire good study strategies to enhance the productivity of any time spent studying. According to
Adams, Hurst, Petscher, Prevatt, and Proctor (2006), there is a link between study skills and
academic success that has been supported by various studies. Although most educational structures
are based on the assumption that students possess good study habits, many college students exhibit
difficulty with various skills including: note–taking, ability to select main–ideas, test–wiseness,
information processing, and self–testing (Kuhn, 1988). Going further, difficulty in school and poor
performance on evaluations should not be attributed to lack of ability; but lack of the knowledge and
application of these techniques. While students have been expected to possess certain study habits
since grade school to complete homework and prepare for evaluations, little class time has been
appropriated to cover techniques that enhance these skills. Whether it be a lack of emphasis on
these skill sets from teachers or a lack of concern on behalf of students that leads to poor
performance, it is essential to understand the proper use of these skills sets

Skills That Are Important For College Success

Skills For Professional Development It seems in the society we live in today, having a college
degree is a necessity. Years ago it was the norm for people to just go right into a full time job after
high school, if they even finished high school; they did this to support their families. In today's
society a person has a difficult time getting a decent job without a college degree. During an adults
working life, bachelor degree graduates will earn about $2.1 million and a high school graduate
can expect to earn an average of $1.2 million (Day and Newburger, 2002). This is quite a difference
and it puts a college education in perspective. With college...show more content...
In order to effectively manage your time you need to set short term and long term goals and then
link those goals to your values (Keys to College Studying, Carter Bishop, and Kravits, 2002). After
we set goals we need to prioritize them to make sure the most important goals get accomplished first.
Time management is an art; it takes an individual that is detail oriented and mature enough to know
oneself.
I think the most important skill that a college level student needs is discipline. How many movies
have we watched that have college students partying their college years away and then regretting it
in the end. A disciplined person can make the most out of a college education. With the rising cost
of a college education we need to make the most out of the time we have. The average cost in
2004–2005 of a four year private schools is $20,082 (up 6% from last year) and the average cost of a
four year public school is $5,132 (up 10.5% from last year), (2004–2005 College Costs, http:/
/www.collegeboard.com/article/0,3868,6–29–0–4494,00.html). With the rising costs of education a
person needs to be disciplined to make the most out of it. All these skills, time management,
critical thinking, and discipline are keys to success in college. I began my college education in
1991 and these skills are probably the three that I use the most. Time management is a skill that I
have been trying to master since I began my college

Importance Of Academic Skills In Education
The importance of learning academic and vocational skills throughout high school is that it creates
a basis for every major or job they could want to do, and see non–academic subjects in an intellectual
light. A student spends roughly four thousand hours in high school. Very little of this time is spent
learning vocational skills if any. This is because in our society, there is a bias that more academic
based jobs are of higher status than vocational jobs. Parents push their children to have more
academic jobs and majors to improve their child's "status." But when a student with high academic
achievement chooses to have a vocational style job it is seen as unfortunate or even a waste of
genius and intellect. Students should have the opportunity to be trained in whatever careers they
want, even if it is a more vocational job like a trade instead of an academic job. If these students
find these vocational jobs more meaningful than any academic job they should have the right to
choose them because of their pursuit of happiness. The is one major problem with learning
vocational skills in high school is that they are too specific for students who have not decided what
they want to do with their futures yet. Teaching students academic skills in high school gives them
all the choice in the world to what they want to be. Learning academic skills gives students a well
rounded education for whatever they want to go on to do. Even when students go to a university to

Academic Skills And Career Skills
Skill concept is a characteristic or professionalism which is found in a person to perform a certain
work or certain task with the limitation of time and as per Desire quality. For instance, a person
who is skilled with speaking different languages and also understanding the meaning of different
languages words. Another example is a person who can perform a work which cannot be done by
other person perfectly. Action of work is a skin of the person. These skills are developed by those
activities which we performed in our routine life. As per the requirement of the case I have to
mention those activities which I have done in the classroom and have to mention those academic
skills and career skills which have been improved by these class activities. Buy appearing in the

Reflection On My Writing Skills
Reflection
My writing skills which I have worked on over the few months I have been in English 102 have
changed quite a bit in my opinion. There are many things which I have improved upon that were
amongst my weaker writing skills when the year began. On the opposite side of that point, there are
also many things which I still need to improve upon if I want to truly elevate my writing to a level
that I will be confident in. Finally, I have gained new skills outside of writing from this class,
particularly the activities which we did in class at various points throughout the year. These things
all cumulate together to give me an appreciation of English courses which I did not previously have.
Throughout this semester there are many skills that I have noticed have improved through the
constant writing of essays for this class. The one that I find most noticeable is a habit I had long
struggled with which was essentially my tendency to be over necessarily wordy when writing my
essays. I believe that I was able to somewhat fix this subconsciously, just by knowing that I was no
longer in high school, and could no longer get by with just attempting to fill up my word count. I
also believe I have greatly improved in my topic selection. In high school I would throw caution to
the wind and just pick whatever topic came to mind just in an effort to get it done. I have been
much more calculated in college, and I believe that it has helped me write better essays. While these

Reflection on the development of academic and professional skill in year one
In this paper I am going to reflect on my professional and academic skills development throughout
my first year at University. I began this course as a mature student hungry for education and a fresh
challenge. During semester two, I found university quite hard as I am currently having family
problems; as a result I had to learn to balance university life, part time job and regular trips back
home (and that is Bulgaria).
At these times, in compound business environment and growing competition, to be able to compete

Actuality getting involved in such type of professional conversations improved my level of
communication and taught me how to behave in a professional manner. Also I would like to say that
communication is a dual practice, you not only get to talk and build on your communication skill
but, you also get to listen and by it become an understanding supportive person. One of the
drawbacks in my communication skill enhancement is that I don't think it works well in UK, in this
multicultural university I have struggled to communicate effectively with students and teachers.
This can be explained by Hoftsede's structure of cultural dimensions (Hofstede, Hofstede, and
Minkov, 2010). In his framework he explains the world as complex of diverse nations and people,
who act, think and perform differently (Hoftsede et al., 2010). To overcome this difficulty I was
supported by my colleagues at university.
Team–working
My duties as an assistant manager included a lot of team work. The planning of an occasion meant
that more people will have to work in close cooperation. These duties helped me in the developing of
team–working skills. I have gone even further in improving my skills by engaging in tutorials which
are based on team–work. I used Team Life Cycles to expand my observation and skills on
team–working. The Life Cycle presents clear structure and directions on how teams ought to

forms of team development. Some of the most successful teams bring together employees with
different talents and perspectives. In this research report, my aim is to have a clear and deep

Findings Teams have become very common and effective since they have proven to be effective in
areas as cost reduction, developing new and innovative products, and improving quality (Effective
Human relation, 2008). Team development is supported, in fact, required by almost all managements
today, but still it may take quite a long time for the members to learn the task and activities and to fit
themselves in the particular environment. Team work may vary as the organization or company
varies. Team work involves a lot of important aspects such as relationships, cooperation, learning,
leadership etc. since a team works together in

Ever since I was young, my parents instilled the idea within me that academic success is very
important. I'm the first generation in my family to go to college, so obviously, they did well
enough to guide me into wanting to do well enough in high school to have the grades to get into
NJIT. But academic success is a lot more than merely getting good grades– it's also about the role it
plays in advancing in my future. Not to mention, there will be plenty of obstacles along the way,
but there will be things I will have to do in order to ensure my academic success in my future here

Overcoming hurdles in academic life is something that everyone, whether in middle school, high
school, or college, will have to do. In my case, when I got my schedule, I was at first quite irritated
to see I had three hours in between classes twice a week, being that it is such a long break, and I
could fit two classes into that time span. But I realized soon after, I could use my breaks between
classes for studying or doing homework. And when I start something during class or during a
break, more likely, and don't get to finish, when I get home, taking that extra half an hour after I
get home to finish it before taking a break really does pay off, especially when I now it's only due
in five days, and I have other homework I can do in the meantime, and I don't have to worry about
that assignment anymore. Procrastination got the best of me in middle school, and in the first half
of high school, but now, I usually don't let it get me. In short, academic life and success is more than
just your grades– it's the way you let the way you do in school and your intellect mold your future,
being that you guide it in the right direction. Obstacles will be present in the process, but you have
to hop over them, making sure that if you trip, you get up again, because it will be hard to keep

Strengths And Weaknesses Of Academic Writing
Writing is a very helpful skill for most of the people who want to achieve success in their life.
Improving your writing skills is very helpful before entering the university. Students are facing a
lot of issues in their university because they are being asked to write academic essays, or scientific
papers, and they did not have the expected skills to write what is being asked from them. On the
other hand, those who have studied APA, and MLA in their high school, or by self

likely to get high scores in their universities academic essays than those who did not. Those who

My point of weakness is that I always go off topic, and I think most of the students do that in the
beginning of their academic papers practices. It is not easy to stay on topic. However, I have learned
some techniques that made me able to stay on topic, and I would like to mention them to students to
avoid making my mistakes. First, students could make an outline before writing their final draft, and
submit it. This has helped me so much in organizing my paper, and making it easy for me follow up
with the points that I want to talk about without going off topic. Second, students should have a
strong thesis statement, and restating it in each paragraph. By restating your thesis statement, you
are not only making the reader following up with your points, but you are also making your thesis
statement stronger because it has been mentioned in many paragraphs with different examples.
Lastly, students should use transition words in their essay. Transition words helps the reader to
progress from one idea to the next. Therefore, students should learn how to write academic essays,
and take it more seriously because it could improve their

Skill, Ability, and Technique in Sports Essays
Skill, Ability, and Technique in Sports
Introduction
In order to be a success at a particular sport, whether it's playing football in the back garden or
opening the batting for your country you must have skill, ability and technique. Skill is the ability to
choose and perform the right techniques at the correct time, regularly and with the minimum of
effort in a specific movement in a sport. Sportsmen use their skills to achieve particular objectives in
their sport e.g. scoring a century in cricket. Ability is the make up of a sportsman. A number of
different aspects of your make up can be taken into consideration whilst talking about ability e.g.

(Professor GP Meredith)
Both of the above quotes show the distinct link between skill, ability and technique. Skill can be
broken down into a number of different types. These are: Cognitive skills, Perceptual skills, Motor
skills and Perceptual motor skills.
In order to perform any skill in sports, you must have the ability to do so. Your ability is something
that you are born with, so to improve it you need to train. Here are two definitions of ability:
James Quirke ––––––––––––
"Discuss the differences between skill, ability and technique and explain how you would structure
practices to enhance these components of a performance"
"Motor abilities are relatively enduring traits which are generally stable qualities or factors that help
a person carry out a particular act" (E. Fleishman)
"Motor abilities are innate inherited traits that determine an individuals co–ordination, balance,
ability and speed of reactions" (R. Arnot and C. Gaines)
The difference between skill and ability is that a skill can be taught and changed and your ability is
something that is inherited from your parents and cannot be taught.
Technique is something, which you need to have to complete a particular skill. It is often confused
with skill. To perform a particular skill in any

Skill Development Essay
"Why continuing skill development is important for my continuing studies and future employability"
As much as learning is an on going process, skills development follows the same trend. Nowadays,
competition has been the hallmark in every corporate endeavour and to say the least, each product
seeks for competitive edge. I must not stay behind in this race for leadership and excellence because
my future employability depends largely on how I perfected my skills during this period of
continuing skill development and advancement. So what priorities should I consider necessary

However, leadership competency is also an on going process and it demands lots of energy and
self–confidence on my part to stand up before others and accept the responsibility to serve as
guide towards a certain goal. To be a good leader, I must learn to focus on people because they are
the object of leadership. People are neither objects to posses nor instruments to use. Each person
has qualities and skills that a good leader must learn to appreciate and allow them to prosper. As a
good leader to these people, I must be on my own person and should show originality of ideas and
unequalled skills to trust. Leadership skill leads others to follow a path or a vision that I would
present in order for us to achieve our goal. However, I am not the only person who would build the
goal but it is a concerted effort of all the people in my organization. (Kotler, 2006, p. 212) Finally, as
a leader, I must learn the moral and legal values of leading my followers toward a positive
direction. In the corporate landscape, being a leader is not simply putting pressures or coercing
the workforce to act in accordance with what I want. I have a model leader and he truly inspired

Questions On Dealing With My Academic Skills
In this short literary composition dealing with my Academic Skills subject analytically and
speculatively writing about my presentation and how I've been delivered it. Starting with the
creation of my presentation. Planning the presentation structure by deciding on what skills and
techniques I can learn in this course that can be applied to the given content. And I've planned to
decide presenting Academic skills applied in Business Communication. Giving a presentation with
my fellow classmates from level 5 Management at Edenz College and my Tutor Yuri Zhukov in
Academic Skill subject can be a daunting and anxiety ridden–task. Where I'm going to be in front of
a group of people, some I may know, some may be total strangers. While on stage all eyes are on
me. Every word, every nuance, my appearance, the tone of my voice, not to mention the content to
my presentation, will be scrutinized in every way. That I may be able know what Iwant to say, know

Wide Range Of Developing Academic Study Skills
This essay will discuss a wide range of developing academic study skills, used in academic writing.
It will also demonstrate the benefits of expanding one's knowledge of these studies and how it can
aid the user in terms of both academic and professional progression.
In order to progress and achieve high expectations in Higher Education, developing a range of
effective study skills and strategies, is an absolute necessity to fulfil any criteria! Of course revising
is a beneficial accolade, both on subject matter and examination preparation. Most students,
successful academic students, have developed their own study strategies for examinations and
academic writing (Lengefield, 1994). However, revising alone, is just not enough. Developing study
skills in note taking, critical thinking, structuring and writing essays, referencing and much more are
crucial for success in Higher Education. One can develop most of these skills through practice, trial
and error, and from feedback from tutors and your peers; usually most universities and colleges
provide useful information on study skills as well as alternative methods of referencing.
Excellence in quality note taking is a necessity in Higher Education. Developing note taking skills
can take on a plethora of forms. It can evolve from one structured platform basis, to a tangent of
individualism and creativity. Having the option of using traditional pen and paper or using other
mediums to collect and summarize relevant data (using a

Academic Skills Essay

  • 1. Essay about Academic Success Continuing Academic Success Kasey E Marsh II Gen/200 3/1/2015 Susie Holiday Continuing Academic Success The end is near to my first class at the University of Phoenix. As I continue on with my education, I would like to have great academic success. Academic success can be achieved by being aware of one's goals, the writing process and the importance of critical thinking skills. By knowing these things, I believe my academic success will be achievable. Goals Setting goals in life is the key to my success. I feel that without goals the task you do in life has little to no purpose. "A goal is whatever an individual is striving to accomplish in their life"(AlispahiД‡, n.d., p. 197). There is a lot I would...show more content... According to Kolb, Longest, and Jensen (2013) just spending more time at a keyboard will not make one a better writer. The best method would be to change one's practices and strategies to become a better writer. An example that was used was that best swimmers were not precisely the ones who swam the most but the one who switched it up and would work on the little things. So to become a better I plan to adapt to the writing process. Sources An enormous part that will help my chances of academic success will be the sources the University of Phoenix has to offer. A source, in particular that will help my educational success is the center for writing excellence. This source helps a lot because I have never done papers in APA before. Also, the paper reviewing services helps a lot as well to check for plagiarism and grammar mistakes. I normally don't have a problem with math but if I need assistance the center for mathematics excellence is at my disposal. When it comes to my career, the careers page will be valuable. I have already used it to improve my resume. Furthermore, it will also aid me in building a cover letter, how to conduct myself in an interview and on networking. Another source that will benefit my success is the university's massive library. It is perfect for any research I might be considering. Phoenix connect, is also a great resource for networking. I have been told it shouldn't matter who you know to get a job, but Get more content on HelpWriting.net

This is to define your own perception of the acceptable and poor quality within yourself. Taking action of the weaknesses and developing my skills to improve me around everyone, (Stadter, 2015). Gibbs Reflective Cycle (1988), a framework for students to resolve problems in assignments, step by step, I will reflect on my own problems, (UK Essays, 2013). My previous goal was to study in a university and now that I have accomplished that goal, my next goal is to complete the course with a strong grade. But the reality of achieving the Foundation Degree is a much harder concept than what I first thought, having...show more content... "Experience–reflection–knowledge" Pawar and Anscombe, (2015), has mentioned Dewey (1933) is a great example of how planning ahead is a step towards better success rather than dwelling on the past problems. Implementing Dewey 's theory into my assignment, assisting my understanding of how to support ideas with evidence such as deciding whether I have included all the information needed, the author/publisher or whether I have referenced continuously throughout the assignments. When previously writing assignments I need to consider how well it was written, learning from the mistakes, understanding the feedbacks and setting out times to do better next time (Percival 2006). While referencing is a struggle for me to apply, Kell and Vogl (2010) stated that overcoming referencing can be done by reading different books, journals, and articles of interest. Subsequently, after analysing the problem, I realised I try to be a perfectionist, causing a hindrance in producing assignments. I need to start believing in myself much more and be more inspired, as Percival, (2006) has mentioned that "being too sensitive will block your progress", by doing time–bound goals and starting the assignment rather than thinking about the purpose. Percival (2006), has also said putting our energy into the solution rather than the problem will be an advantage to our mindset. • 3. Another Step of a Long Process: Studying English Academic writing is an art of expressing and transforming thoughts and ideas into physical form to deliver information logically and scientifically. This skill needs to be refined and practiced constantly regularly. After three months of taking ESL 273, I have accumulated various experiences in writing advanced sentences and organizing academic essays which are really necessary for me to perform well in the next English course, ESL 5, as well as other classes. As a result, I think I am well–prepared and ready for the next coming course ESL 5. During the ESL 273 course, one of my strengths which is the ability of using various examples as well as explanations to reinforce my...show more content... Consequently, I did not have enough time to check and edit some minor errors existing in my essay "Society Built our Perception and Ability" like verb tense, punctuation, and word form. This also explains why I usually perform successfully in the grammar tests given by my teacher, but I still repeat those grammar mistakes again in my essays. Even though those errors do not affect readers' comprehensions but they might be distracted and thus the quality of my essay would be diminished. To help students combat this mistake, my teacher has applied an interesting teaching strategy which is collaborative learning. To do this, I work in pair with another friend and exchange our writing assignments in order to check other partner's errors. I feel that this method works really well in my case because checking my partner's mistakes has helped me to reinforce my proofreading skill. Besides, I find out a strategy to deal with the shortage of time of an in–class writing. To do this, I try to recheck and go over a sentence as I write to make sure it is free of grammar and punctuation mistakes. This new approach is very compatible and essential for me in order to be successful when I get into higher English classes like ESL 5 and EWRT 1A because I actually check my essay three or four times before I finish it. In ESL 273, I have achieved some specific goals in Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 4. Developing Strong Academic Study Skills Developing strong academic study skills in Higher Education is arguably the most important area of learning and development a student can cultivate, in order to achieve academic success. The skills that are acquired, the learning techniques that a student refines and life learning experiences are all going to develop into long–term career prospects and future career enhancement. Some of the key areas for development and discussion in this essay will include note taking/essay writing, critical thinking and analysing questions and reflective thinking skills. A major area for development and improvement revolves around effective note taking and essay planning/writing. As a Higher Education student you will be required to plan and produce countless essays in relation to the course you are studying, and a key point of reference to help with this would come from "The Guide to Learning and Study Skills for Higher Education and at Work" who give the following advice and tips: 'Identify the purpose of the essay and who the audience (reader) is and what is required for both – structure your work and develop your arguments/main points – proof read your work and improve language, spelling, punctuation, grammar and style – review what you did and use feedback to improve your essay writing for the future' (Bingham, R. and Drew, S. 2012 The guide to learning and study skills: For higher Education and at work). This skill helps to speak confidently in front of people while presenting a topic. This skill can help a person for example like a person who is shy or not confident to speak in front of people so therefore they can learn this skill and be full confident to present and speak among people. This skill not only helps to speak confidently but also helps to improve the accent, grammar and vocabulary of the person so therefore the person having this skill can easily improve himself/herself without any support from any other person. In my school life I really was unconfident or shy in speaking. But after joining my Degree Entry Program (DEP) and learning this skill I myself improved the way and became confident to share my idea or to carry out my presentation in front of many people. I learned this skill by the assignments given to me in my DEP by my teachers. These assignments included individual presentations and group presentations. Firstly it was my individual presentation at first I was nervous but after watching my classmates presentations I got motivated and carried out my presentation. From that day onwards I felt that I am starting to learn this skill. Then after the group presentations I believed that now I have totally adopted this skill and it was totally fun and interesting for me to go and do more and more presentation. This skill taught me to be professional speaker and also taught me the basic elements needed in speaking or the structure of speech. It improved my speaking skill and took it to a whole new level. Throughout my DEP I noticed a great improvement in my speaking skill; therefore I got better grades in my presentations. So I went on and used this presentation during my DEP and am ready to use it in my future. • 6. Effective Study Skills and Academic Performance Introduction Effective study skills are necessary for a college student to excel academically. The student must develop these skills in order to retain information learned in the present for their future benefit. Study skills can be a combination of several techniques, including time management, note–taking, self–testing, and test–wiseness, to name a few. There is no one best way to study, therefore, techniques can be tailored to the needs of the student to achieve the most optimal result. However, diagnostic testing is also available to assist students in assessing their weaknesses in their learning behaviors and study habits. Research has shown that effective study skills lead to improved academic performance. The habits that students...show more content... In contrast, research was conducted with college students and found a direct relationship between amount of time studied and exam scores (Barbarick and Ippolito 2003). While the amount of time spent studying may have an unproven impact on academic performance, it is very important to acquire good study strategies to enhance the productivity of any time spent studying. According to Adams, Hurst, Petscher, Prevatt, and Proctor (2006), there is a link between study skills and academic success that has been supported by various studies. Although most educational structures are based on the assumption that students possess good study habits, many college students exhibit difficulty with various skills including: note–taking, ability to select main–ideas, test–wiseness, information processing, and self–testing (Kuhn, 1988). Going further, difficulty in school and poor performance on evaluations should not be attributed to lack of ability; but lack of the knowledge and application of these techniques. While students have been expected to possess certain study habits since grade school to complete homework and prepare for evaluations, little class time has been appropriated to cover techniques that enhance these skills. Whether it be a lack of emphasis on these skill sets from teachers or a lack of concern on behalf of students that leads to poor performance, it is essential to understand the proper use of these skills sets Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 7. Skills That Are Important For College Success University Of Phoenix Gen 300 Skills For Professional Development It seems in the society we live in today, having a college degree is a necessity. Years ago it was the norm for people to just go right into a full time job after high school, if they even finished high school; they did this to support their families. In today's society a person has a difficult time getting a decent job without a college degree. During an adults working life, bachelor degree graduates will earn about $2.1 million and a high school graduate can expect to earn an average of $1.2 million (Day and Newburger, 2002). This is quite a difference and it puts a college education in perspective. With college...show more content... In order to effectively manage your time you need to set short term and long term goals and then link those goals to your values (Keys to College Studying, Carter Bishop, and Kravits, 2002). After we set goals we need to prioritize them to make sure the most important goals get accomplished first. Time management is an art; it takes an individual that is detail oriented and mature enough to know oneself. I think the most important skill that a college level student needs is discipline. How many movies have we watched that have college students partying their college years away and then regretting it in the end. A disciplined person can make the most out of a college education. With the rising cost of a college education we need to make the most out of the time we have. The average cost in 2004–2005 of a four year private schools is $20,082 (up 6% from last year) and the average cost of a four year public school is $5,132 (up 10.5% from last year), (2004–2005 College Costs, http:/ /www.collegeboard.com/article/0,3868,6–29–0–4494,00.html). With the rising costs of education a person needs to be disciplined to make the most out of it. All these skills, time management, critical thinking, and discipline are keys to success in college. I began my college education in 1991 and these skills are probably the three that I use the most. • 8. Importance Of Academic Skills In Education The importance of learning academic and vocational skills throughout high school is that it creates a basis for every major or job they could want to do, and see non–academic subjects in an intellectual light. A student spends roughly four thousand hours in high school. Very little of this time is spent learning vocational skills if any. This is because in our society, there is a bias that more academic based jobs are of higher status than vocational jobs. Parents push their children to have more academic jobs and majors to improve their child's "status." But when a student with high academic achievement chooses to have a vocational style job it is seen as unfortunate or even a waste of genius and intellect. Students should have the opportunity to be trained in whatever careers they want, even if it is a more vocational job like a trade instead of an academic job. If these students find these vocational jobs more meaningful than any academic job they should have the right to choose them because of their pursuit of happiness. The is one major problem with learning vocational skills in high school is that they are too specific for students who have not decided what they want to do with their futures yet. Teaching students academic skills in high school gives them all the choice in the world to what they want to be. Learning academic skills gives students a well rounded education for whatever they want to go on to do. Even when students go to a university to Get more content on HelpWriting.net

There are many things which I have improved upon that were amongst my weaker writing skills when the year began. On the opposite side of that point, there are also many things which I still need to improve upon if I want to truly elevate my writing to a level that I will be confident in. Finally, I have gained new skills outside of writing from this class, particularly the activities which we did in class at various points throughout the year. These things all cumulate together to give me an appreciation of English courses which I did not previously have. Throughout this semester there are many skills that I have noticed have improved through the constant writing of essays for this class. The one that I find most noticeable is a habit I had long struggled with which was essentially my tendency to be over necessarily wordy when writing my essays. I believe that I was able to somewhat fix this subconsciously, just by knowing that I was no longer in high school, and could no longer get by with just attempting to fill up my word count. I also believe I have greatly improved in my topic selection. In high school I would throw caution to the wind and just pick whatever topic came to mind just in an effort to get it done. I have been much more calculated in college, and I believe that it has helped me write better essays. While these were the Get more content on HelpWriting.net

Reflection on the development of academic and professional skill in year one In this paper I am going to reflect on my professional and academic skills development throughout my first year at University. I began this course as a mature student hungry for education and a fresh challenge. During semester two, I found university quite hard as I am currently having family problems; as a result I had to learn to balance university life, part time job and regular trips back home (and that is Bulgaria). At these times, in compound business environment and growing competition, to be able to compete on the job market you need to possess outstanding skills and be always a step ahead of others. Being a good learner and constantly developing one's...show more content... Actuality getting involved in such type of professional conversations improved my level of communication and taught me how to behave in a professional manner. Also I would like to say that communication is a dual practice, you not only get to talk and build on your communication skill but, you also get to listen and by it become an understanding supportive person. One of the drawbacks in my communication skill enhancement is that I don't think it works well in UK, in this multicultural university I have struggled to communicate effectively with students and teachers. This can be explained by Hoftsede's structure of cultural dimensions (Hofstede, Hofstede, and Minkov, 2010). In his framework he explains the world as complex of diverse nations and people, who act, think and perform differently (Hoftsede et al., 2010). To overcome this difficulty I was supported by my colleagues at university. Team–working My duties as an assistant manager included a lot of team work. The planning of an occasion meant that more people will have to work in close cooperation. These duties helped me in the developing of team–working skills. I have gone even further in improving my skills by engaging in tutorials which are based on team–work. I used Team Life Cycles to expand my observation and skills on team–working. The Life Cycle presents clear structure and directions on how teams ought to Get more content on HelpWriting.net

  • 15. Ever since I was young, my parents instilled the idea within me that academic success is very important. I'm the first generation in my family to go to college, so obviously, they did well enough to guide me into wanting to do well enough in high school to have the grades to get into NJIT. But academic success is a lot more than merely getting good grades– it's also about the role it plays in advancing in my future. Not to mention, there will be plenty of obstacles along the way, but there will be things I will have to do in order to ensure my academic success in my future here at NJIT. Academic success is very much an ongoing process. Like most teens, I'm quite the fan of money, but working retail isn't what I would like to do for the...show more content... Overcoming hurdles in academic life is something that everyone, whether in middle school, high school, or college, will have to do. In my case, when I got my schedule, I was at first quite irritated to see I had three hours in between classes twice a week, being that it is such a long break, and I could fit two classes into that time span. But I realized soon after, I could use my breaks between classes for studying or doing homework. And when I start something during class or during a break, more likely, and don't get to finish, when I get home, taking that extra half an hour after I get home to finish it before taking a break really does pay off, especially when I now it's only due in five days, and I have other homework I can do in the meantime, and I don't have to worry about that assignment anymore. Procrastination got the best of me in middle school, and in the first half of high school, but now, I usually don't let it get me. In short, academic life and success is more than just your grades– it's the way you let the way you do in school and your intellect mold your future, being that you guide it in the right direction. Obstacles will be present in the process, but you have to hop over them, making sure that if you trip, you get up again, because it will be hard to keep running if you Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 16. Strengths And Weaknesses Of Academic Writing Writing is a very helpful skill for most of the people who want to achieve success in their life. Improving your writing skills is very helpful before entering the university. Students are facing a lot of issues in their university because they are being asked to write academic essays, or scientific papers, and they did not have the expected skills to write what is being asked from them. On the other hand, those who have studied APA, and MLA in their high school, or by self –learning, are more likely to get high scores in their universities academic essays than those who did not. Those who have studied academic writing are having a big chance to achieve their goals in their university life because most of the courses in the university requires...show more content... My point of weakness is that I always go off topic, and I think most of the students do that in the beginning of their academic papers practices. It is not easy to stay on topic. However, I have learned some techniques that made me able to stay on topic, and I would like to mention them to students to avoid making my mistakes. First, students could make an outline before writing their final draft, and submit it. This has helped me so much in organizing my paper, and making it easy for me follow up with the points that I want to talk about without going off topic. Second, students should have a strong thesis statement, and restating it in each paragraph. By restating your thesis statement, you are not only making the reader following up with your points, but you are also making your thesis statement stronger because it has been mentioned in many paragraphs with different examples. Lastly, students should use transition words in their essay. Transition words helps the reader to progress from one idea to the next. Therefore, students should learn how to write academic essays, and take it more seriously because it could improve their Get more content on HelpWriting.net

Your ability is something that you are born with, so to improve it you need to train. Skill Development Essay "Why continuing skill development is important for my continuing studies and future employability" As much as learning is an on going process, skills development follows the same trend. Nowadays, competition has been the hallmark in every corporate endeavour and to say the least, each product seeks for competitive edge. I must not stay behind in this race for leadership and excellence because my future employability depends largely on how I perfected my skills during this period of continuing skill development and advancement. So what priorities should I consider necessary during this stage of my life? Skills are competencies expected to produce input for the organization I intend to belong. Communication skill appeals to me...show more content... However, leadership competency is also an on going process and it demands lots of energy and self–confidence on my part to stand up before others and accept the responsibility to serve as guide towards a certain goal. To be a good leader, I must learn to focus on people because they are the object of leadership. People are neither objects to posses nor instruments to use. Each person has qualities and skills that a good leader must learn to appreciate and allow them to prosper. As a good leader to these people, I must be on my own person and should show originality of ideas and unequalled skills to trust. Leadership skill leads others to follow a path or a vision that I would present in order for us to achieve our goal. However, I am not the only person who would build the goal but it is a concerted effort of all the people in my organization. (Kotler, 2006, p. 212) Finally, as a leader, I must learn the moral and legal values of leading my followers toward a positive direction. In the corporate landscape, being a leader is not simply putting pressures or coercing the workforce to act in accordance with what I want. I have a model leader and he truly inspired me after I read his biography. His name is David Pottruck, the president and co–CEO of the Charles Schwab Corporation.
