This document outlines several roles within an academic library. 2. REFERENCE AND
RESOURCE LIBRARIAN
• Provide general reference services in-person
and virtually including the use of the catalog,
searching databases, and other research
activities.
• Create, support, and assess information literacy
program by providing library instruction to
undergraduate courses in classrooms, new student
orientation and other events.
• Collaborate with faculty and staff to provide
workshops and other learning initiatives for the
college community.

3. CATALOG LIBRARIAN
• The Catalog Librarian provides expertise in
managing discoverable access to the collections.
Responsible for bibliographic control of all library
materials, the implementation of efficient
cataloging procedures, catalog maintenance, staff
hiring and training. Work includes non-traditional
hours providing reference assistance, primarily
weekend shifts on a set rotation.

4. ONLINE LIBRARIAN
• Provides virtual reference service for faculty,
students, and staff through electronic media,
including email, chat, SMS text and
videoconferencing.
• Develops a web-based collection and electronic
course material selection in one or more of the
University's academic programs.
• Specializes in one or more of the library's
contracted database, e-book, or student tutorial
programs.

• Design & create learning objects, LibGuides,
and tutorials
• Respond to research & reference inquiries
• Participate in collection development,
assessment activities

6. METADATA MANAGEMENT
LIBRARIAN
• Design, evaluate, and implement procedures,
guidelines, and workflows to facilitate discovery of
materials and continuously improve access to
library resources
• Maintain awareness of and engagement with
national and international trends and
developments in cataloging and metadata
standards, bibliographic and authority control, and
the role of knowledge systems in supporting
systemic oppression.
• Train and mentor colleagues in metadata
implementation for electronic resources and
physical materials

7. ARCHIVIST
• Provides leadership, vision, and direction in
operating the University Archives
• Directs and oversees the appraisal, acquisition,
processing, preservation, and digitization of
university records of enduring value in all formats
• Creates finding aids using DACS and keeps
informed of national archival standards
• Fields reference and research requests from
faculty, staff, students, alumni, scholars, and the
general public

8. INFORMATION
LITERACY LIBRARIAN
• Delivers instruction in-person and online
(synchronous & asynchronous) using best
practices for learning, teaching, and information
literacy.
• Builds upon the strengths of the existing
program while imprinting the program with new
vision and adaptions to the changing core
curriculum.
• Oversees the creation and continued
development of learning objects, including
tutorials and multimedia projects, for critical
thinking and information literacy learning
objectives.
• Promotes student success and retention
through advocacy of use of library services and
resources

9. ASSOCIATE DEAN
• Collaborate with the Collections Librarian and
acquisitions staff to produce analyses, data
visualizations, and reports, including regular
budget updates with respect to fiscal-year targets,
trends, and library impact.
• Provide leadership for the selection, licensing,
management, and preservation of print and
electronic resources.
• Provide leadership and participate in consortial
and cooperative activities that relate to collections
and scholarly communication.

10. DEAN
• Provides overall operational and administrative
supervision to the library.
• Provides management direction in personnel
matters including staffing, performance
evaluations, and employee recognition or
discipline. Promotes affirmative action and equal
opportunity in recruitment, selection, training,
development, and promotion.
• Develops strong partnerships within the
university, collaborates with faculty to assess,
provide, and improve the library collection and
services to meet students and faculty needs.
