Abstract
For this class, I made a complete Unit Plan about Poetry. I chose the topic of poetry
because I strongly believe that poetry is one of the best ways to express yourself and practice
creativity. I think it is especially important for younger children who have a stronger sense of
imagination. Some kids will say they do not like poetry because it is hard, but I feel that these
kids have not been properly exposed to all that poetry is, and how easy it can be. I created this
Unit Plan around the idea that anyone can be a poet, and that poetry is fun to write. My lessons
are focused on teaching kids what elements go into poetry and writing poems, and showing them
many examples of the poems we discuss. Throughout the lessons, the children have several
different opportunities to practice writing their own poems so that they can build their confidence
in this skill. At the end of my unit, the students get to create their own poems unassisted, and
they will have hopefully realized just how important poetry is.
