Problem - |6x+5|=23 Problem - |6x+5|=-23
6x+5=23 6x+5=-23

6x = 18 6x=-28

x= 3 x= -14/3
Check: 6(3)+5=23 Check: 6(-14/3)+5=-23
18+5=23 Right!!! -28+5= -23 Right!!!

3. ABSOLUTE VALUE EQUATIONS

Problem - |2x+7|= 5 Problem - |2x+7|=-5
2x+7 =5 2x+7=-5

2x=-2 2x=-12

x= -1 x= -6
Check: 2(-1)+7=5 Check: 2(-6)+7=-5

• It is and if it is pointing < that way and if it is equal to with line under it going that
way.
• It is or if it is pointing > that way and it is also “or” if it is equal to going that way
