Arts-Based Research (ABR)
is an umbrella term for many
different approaches that combine
scholarly inquiry and the arts.
These methods tap into artistic
process as a primary mode of
inquiry creating various forms of art
as a way to collect data, conduct
analysis, and/or represent social
science research.
Knowledge can be generated
by artistic knowing and
creative inquiry.

My experience throughout my journey in the doctoral pro-
gram has mostly been about finding a balance between
all things in my life that are competing for my time and
energy. The pieces don’t necessarily fit, but that doesn’t
mean that a balance cannot be found.
The continuous raging blizzards of this
winter are indeed an apt metaphor for my
journey. The experiences that have shaped
me in profound ways this year as so beau-
tiful to look at from afar and I am so glad
they happened, yet in the midst of them..
totally disorienting.
This is my cello.
Being a doctoral student and
learning to play the cello have
both been dreams of mine.
Both goals require patience, dis-
cipline, and a willingness to make
mistakes.
Both require financial investment.
I believe they will both pay off
(but not necessarily financially).
Neither would happen without
mentoring from competent and
patient teachers.
Both are often fun, but some-
times both feel like a lot of work.
Both have led me to communities
of remarkable people.
Unlike my studies, my cello is
currently neglected.
This journey is a million
adjectives at once, in batches
and singularly. This image
represents all those for me.
It has beauty, character,
uncertainty, hope and
adventure. Where will lead?
Do I follow the woman in the
picture? Do I go through the
hall? What will my vulnerability
net me….what is the risk?
This is a picture taken in old
town Lublin, Poland. It leads
to what is now a vibrant and
colourful old town filled with
tourists. In the 1940’s it led to
a Nazi prison and ultimately
train to a death camp nearby.
As early as the 1500’s it was
a path to the some of the
most learned men living in the
era. Change…..the only true
constant.

This journey is a million adjectives at once, in batches and singularly. This image represents all those for me. It has beauty, character, uncertainty, hope and adventure. Where will lead? Do I follow the woman in the picture? Do I go through the hall? What will my vulnerability net me….what is the risk? This is a picture taken in old town Lublin, Poland. It leads to what is now a vibrant and colourful old town filled with tourists. In the 1940’s it led to a Nazi prison and ultimately train to a death camp nearby. As early as the 1500’s it was a path to the some of the most learned men living in the era. Change…..the only true constant.
