Abonnema is one of the major towns in Kalabari, Nigeria, founded in 1882 and now the capital of Akuku-Toru Local Government Area of Rivers State. The site for development is located at the south tip of Abonnema City. The proposed development is a Financial District intended to serve as an economic bridge to the international world through sustainable design. A canal will be constructed within the site to serve as a water transportation network, storm drainage, river filtration system, and recycled water source for landscaping. The site layout and building designs aim to emphasize sustainability through preservation of vegetation, efficient energy usage, and incorporation of solar power.

2. Abonnema is one of the major towns in Kalabari.
It was founded in 1882. It is now as a capital of
Akuku-Toru Local Government Area of Rivers
State in Nigeria. The site is strategically located at
the south tip of the current Abonnema City.

3. Current weather primarily features a tropical kind of climate
where most of the seasons are very humid and damp. The dry
seasons begin from the month of November and lasts till the
month of march.
The weather is highly influenced by the south western winds and
the north-eastern winds. The south western winds are full of
moisture and blusters from the Atlantic Ocean whereas the
northern easterlies are dry and dirt-laden winds that primarily blow
from the deserts of Sahara. The rainy seasons come into existence
due to the movement of the ITCZ (Intertropical Convergence
Zone) winds into the Northern region of Nigeria. The south-west
winds bring about rainfall in the extreme Southern region of
Nigeria.

4. The current site can be considered leveled. The highest area is at
the Southwest of the site with a highest level of +6m and the
lowest level of +1.4m. The existing entry to the site is from the
Eastside of the site and the proposed new main entry will be from
the Southside.

6. The main concept of these development is to
create a Financial District that will acting as the
Economic Bridge to the International world. This
district can be considered as the first mega
sustainability development that take into
consideration all the sustainability issues to the
new level.

7. There will be 3 types of street network (land). The main network throughout
the site will be in 20 meter in width, the secondary network will be 12 meter
and the internal network will be 6 meter. These networks will be designed to
accommodate the current sustainability issues within the site.

8. There are 3 main circulation to the proposed
site. Small airport, Street Networks and Water
Networks. A canal being proposed to be
carved into the site to act as the main storm
water drainage as well as to provide as the
mean of water transportation.

9. The proposed footprint of the buildings will be a mixture of solid and
void to emphasize and incorporate the sustainability issues. It will be
designed to correspond to the nature habitats of the site as well as to
provide the most efficient design usable layout.

10. Sustainability planning is the highest priority in this proposal of
development. The current trees and vegetation will be carefully
analyzed and selected to be preserved and the earthworks will
only be done at the selected development areas.
A canal is proposed to be constructed within the site to provide:
1. Water transportation networks.
2. Acting as the main storm water drainage during raining
seasons.
3. Acting as the filtration systems to clean the existing polluted
river.
4. Acting as the recycling water system for the landscape areas.

11. The routing of the power networks will be carefully distributed
within the site to ensure the efficiency of energy usage.
There are also incorporation of solar design within the building
proposals to reduce the cost of the main energy consumption.
