LEWIS GRAY
In what way does your media text use, develop
or challenge forms and conventions of real
media products?
 The media product I have created belongs to the music genre, UK Rap. In the
creation of my product I have used conventions of real media texts from the same
genre and also developed and challenged conventions.
 I was able to use, develop and challenge conventions of UK Rap as I did research
into the media texts I was going to be creating (Music Video, digipak and
magazine advert) from the genre.
 Originally in the early stages of my research, I did research into 10 different hip-
hop artists across many different sub genres of hip-hop looking at their music
videos, magazine adverts and digipaks, as I was not yet sure what sub genre of
hip hop I wanted for the genre of my music video. I split it up and looked at
about two artists from each of these sub genres: Rap, Pop-Rap, Grime/UK Rap,
Gangsta Rap, Trap, R&B.
In what way does your media text use, develop or challenge forms
and conventions of real media products?
 What I gained from my research was an insight to what is conventional across all
of hip-hop. This was…
 The artist is dominant and the main feature of the music video, digipak and
magazine advert
 Street clothing and Jewellery is a main accessory in the mise-en-scene
 Low angle shots to make the artist look intimidating
 Objectification of women
In what way does your media text use, develop or challenge
forms and conventions of real media products?
 After I did research into all of hip-hop, it was clear to me what sub genre I wanted to use for the creation of my sub
genre, this being Grime/UK Rap. As I explained on my blog, the reason I researched these two slightly different styles
of music as one is because the culture is exactly the same, with many artists making both types of music, meaning the
conventions in the music videos are exactly the same. Here are what I found were the conventions of UK Rap and
Grime
 Heavily performance based
 located in urban areas
 includes the artist
 Have a dark theme
 crime
 Image of the artist is the main factor on the digipak cover
 Digipaks are very simple
 NOT MANY MAGAZINE ADVERTS but when advertised in a magazine, Artist is the main feature- to show their
importance
 Large entourage
 Objectification of women
 Shots such as low angles to make artists look intimidating
 Fast past transitions and flashes in the music videos
 Many use fade transitions at the end of the videos
In what way does your media text
use, develop or challenge forms and
conventions of real media products?
 My music video is performance narrative hybrid. This is a little
unconventional as most UK Rap music videos are just performance
however this is not true for all as the music video for ‘On The Go’
is a performance narrative hybrid. When watching this video I
found the narrative aspect made the video much more engaging
as he audience is following a story which makes them connect to
the artist as well s just watching the perform. This video defiantly
inspired me to make my music video a hybrid.
 When it came to planning my music video through the storyboard,
I took Andrew Goodwin’s theory of the relationship between the
music and visuals in to consideration as I wanted to make a music
video that he would coin ‘illustrate’, meaning the video links to the
songs lyrics. It conveys the meaning of the song and genre and
through this I was able to present the big issue of crime that
surrounds young people in urban UK culture.
In what way
does your
media text
use, develop
or challenge
forms and
conventions
of real media
products?
 My music video also followed conventions by being located in very urban
settings. The first shot is of the artist in a car park with a big building in the
background. There are also various shots of the artist with a tower block in the
background and the narrative sequence takes place in a skate park.
 In terms of shots my video has many shots of the artist from low angles to
make him look intimidating.
 My music video has transitions that fade out at the end. This is seen in a lot at
the end of UK Rap and Grime music videos so I decided to include it so my
audience will know they are approaching the end of the video. White flashes are
another type of transition I included as they are seen a lot in grime music
videos to match the fast pace of the music. Although the song I used is slow,
the white flash transitions are used for the narrative aspect to make it fast and
build tension.
 The artist is seen to be wearing jewellery such as earrings and chains as these
are conventional in the mise-en-scene of the genre.
In what way does your media text use, develop or challenge
forms and conventions of real media products?
 I’ve talked about how I kept to conventions in my music video, but how did I
break them?
 One very common convention in UK Rap/Grime music, and in fact all of hip-hop
is the objectification of woman, this is something I decided not to include as it is
not something I agree with so I did not want to represent it in my music video.
 In UK Rap and Grime music videos the artist is usually seen with a large group of
friends or an entourage. This is not the case in my music video and there is a
reason for this. As I said earlier I wanted to make my music video to link to
Andrew Goodwin’s theory and make it ‘illustrate’ so that it would link to the
lyrics. The song is called “Layin’ Low” and the narrative is about the artist
witnessing a crime and having to ‘lay low’ so a shot with a large group or
entourage would not really make sense.
In what way does your media text use, develop or
challenge forms and conventions of real media
products?
 Colour
 The inspiration to the colour of my music video came from the editor J
Mornix.
 He was the editor for AJ Tracey’s music video ‘LA4AWEEK’ and when I saw
how he changed the colour of the sky in the edit I just wanted this in my
music video.
 This inspiration for the colour of the sky also came from the new school
American hip-hop. Lil Uzi Vert’s music video for ‘XO TOUR Llif3’ makes use
of the colour of the sky being changed and I believe it is really effective
and portrays emotion. Emotions of fear, anxiety and sadness are feelings I
tried to portray in my music video and I believe the colour of the sky
helped and added to the effectiveness of the portrayal of these feelings.
 Although I included bright and vibrant skies in my music video, I also put
filters over the shots to make the shots look darker as this darkness in the
video is a convention of UK Rap/Grime. However in this instance I
developed conventions of UK rap by mixing the conventional darkness
with the emotic colours of new school American hip-hop.
In what way does your media text use, develop or challenge forms
and conventions of real media products?
 My digipak was conventional of UK Rap/Grime digipaks and also hip-hop digipaks as a whole.
 After my research, I made a plan for my digipak, to have the artist as the main feature on the front as this is very conventional and seen on nearly all
UK rap and hip-hop digipak covers. The clothing is also conventional as he is wearing a hoodie, a cap backwards and earrings. I also decided I
wanted it to be cartoon. This is something that has become very popular in hip-hop digipaks over the recent years so having this feature would
make my digipak feel modern. It is something tat is very popular especially in new school hip-hop which is an area I am using to develop the
common conventions of my genre of hip-hop (UK Rap) so this style for my digipak was a no-brainer.
 Another convention of modern UK Rap/Grime digipaks is that the are very simple. This is because of new media technologies not many people buy
hard copies of albums anymore, instead they stream online. Most modern UK Rap/Grime albums just have plain black panels for the inside panels.
These black panels also serve well as they help the theme of darkness which is a convention in UK Rap/Grime flow through the digipak.
 The text I used for the album name and artists name fits the genre perfectly. It resembles urban graffiti text which is very conventional due to the
massive link between grime and urban culture. The text that inspired me for this text was not actually one I did research on, but instead a text I had
previous knowledge of, this is the digiapak cover for Bugzy Malone’s album ‘Walk With Me’.
 I also used text down the side which resembled Chinese style writing. This was inspired from a mixture of the Chinese text used on UK Rapper
Scarlxrd’s album ‘Chaxsthexry’ and the writing down the side was actually inspired from pop star Justin Biebers album cover ‘Purpose’.
 The back cover of the digipak is very conventional, the names of the songs on the album are listed down the middle and an image of buildings is at
the bottom, linking to the urban conventions. I also included palm trees as they represent luxury, something all young rappers aspire to.
 Images of stars are present throughout the digipak, this is because they represent the artist wanting to become a star, and also links to the artists
name.
In what way does your media text use, develop or challenge forms
and conventions of real media products?
 My magazine advert was very conventional. I took inspiration from primarily two magazine adverts
I had looked at in my research. This was the advert for Drakes album ‘Take Care’ and the advert for
Stormzy’s album ‘Gang Sings and Prayer’.
 Drakes album inspired me the most, simply because of the clean and simple layout. over 1/3rd of
the advert is taken up by an image of the album cover, in my opinion this is very important as a lot
of album covers I looked at did not even relate to the album at all it was just a random picture of
the artist, you had to look further into the text to find out the had released an album, but this type
of advert lets you know that upon first glance.
 Then the artists name takes up just under 1/3rd of the advert at the top making it very clear to the
audience who the artist is and links to the conventions of making the artist look important.
 At the bottom the final 1/3rd of the advert is again text, but here it gives the logistics of the album,
such as release date, features on the album and where it is available.
 What inspired me from the advert for Stormzy’s album was the text. It is very sleek and bold and
easy to read, so I wanted text that resembled this on my advert. This would also keep conventions
whilst I developed it by being inspired by an American rap advert.
In what way does your media text use, develop or
challenge forms and conventions of real media
products?
 INSTAGRAM ADVERT
 When I was doing my research into music videos and the ancillary texts (digipak and magazine advert), I found it
very hard to actually find magazine adverts of modern day hip-hop albums. This is because of the massive change
the world has seen in terms of social media. In AS Media last year we studied the magazine industry and how much
it has been affected by social media. Many magazines are out of circulation or circulation has massively dropped as
people now use social media for what the would have once brought a magazine for, except social media is cheaper,
quicker and more accessible than buying a magazine. So with magazine audiences moving to social media, so have
the advertisers as these audiences are the people they are trying to reach. Using the example of music, people can
now follow their favourite artists on social media to see what they are doing, so they do not need to read a
magazine about it. And also channels on YouTube such as Linkup TV give up and coming artists the ability to
upload their music videos on the channel to promote themselves, as opposed to having to pay for a shout out in a
magazine.
 Further more digipaks too are suffering as people no longer buy hardcopies of digipaks with the album on the CD
anymore, they stream music and albums instead on apps such as Spotify or Apple Music. As I addressed earlier this
is why focus is not given to the inside panels of digipaks because the main focus is on the front cover as this is what
is seen when audiences stream songs from the album.
 In terms of album advertisement, what I see a lot of is the paid sponsorship on social media such as on Instagram.
What this is is an artist will pay for their album to appear on users timelines, this is the new alternative to a
magazine advert in 2017/18.
 Given this, I thought it would be conventional to make a social media advert for the digipak, as this is how most UK
Rap/Grime albums are advertised now and I feel if this album was to be released to day and especially due to who
the album is targeted at, it would be advertised through social media.

and ancillary texts?

ANCILLARY TEXT 2: MAGAZINE ADVERT
How effective is the combination of your
main and ancillary texts?
 Digipak
 Upon analysis of my ancillary tests and main task I believe I have created a digipak which is very
clear to my audience what the genre of music the album is.
 The cartoon image of the artist is becoming very conventional in modern hip-hop and the
clothing of the artist in this image evidences even more the conventions of hip-hop as he is
dressed in street clothing with jewellery.
 The sub genre of my products- UK rap becomes more clear through the urban graffiti style of text
seen on the digipak, text that resembles other UK Rap digipaks such as Bugzy Malone’s album
‘Walk With Me’.
 The buildings on the back cover link to the conventions in UK rap of an urban setting
 I also use semiotics with the image of stars symbolising that the artist is a ‘star’ or pursuing
‘stardom’. This is a trait closely linked with rappers.
 Even the title of the album represents the genre as “loyalty” is something rappers talk a lot about
in their songs.
 In the feedback I received from my target audience one comment on the digipak was “you have a
good understanding of genre” showing I have meet my audiences expectations regrading a
digipak for UK Rap.
How effective is the combination of your
main and ancillary texts?
 Magazine Advert
 My magazine advert too makes the genre of the album very clear to my audience through
keeping to conventions.
 The text used is bold and clear, resembling text seen on Stormzy’s digipak for ‘Gang Signs &
Prayer’
 The name of the artist is very dominant at the top, being conventional in the sense that his name
is important, and his actually name too is conventional as hardly any rappers use their given birth
name, instead nick names or stage names.
 The advert shows off the artist himself in a great deal too as the digipak cover is the centre of
attention on the advert, making the artist the centre of attention which is very common in UK rap
adverts.
 The platforms the song is available on also is conventional of UK Rap due to it being a modern
genre, all UK Rap songs make use of streaming platforms to promote and play their music.
 The advert and digipak combining well was something that was very important to me in the
creation of these products, that’s why I used the front cover of the digipak on the advert to make
it evident they were linked.
How effective is the combination of your
main and ancillary texts?
 Combination of ancillary’s
 As well as putting the digipak cover on the magazine advert, I kept the colour scheme
of the advert the same as the album, using a black background on the advert (like the
black panels in the digipak) to continue the dark theme through out the texts.
 I also make refence to songs that are listed on the back of the album. (These songs
and their features are pastiche to the real artist and his album who’s song I used for
the song in my music video).
 When I referenced the songs name on the advert I did it in the text seen on the album
cover to show the link between the texts even further.
 The importance of these texts linking was the first thing I had planned when
constructing them as otherwise the promotion by the advert for the artist and his
album would be worthless as the audience would not know what is was for. This is also
why it was important to stick to conventions in these texts so my audience could
identify the genre.
How effective is the combination of your main and ancillary texts?
 Music Video
 I have good synergy between my ancillary texts and with my music video.
 In the video the artist is seen in clothing resembling what the cartoon version of himself is wearing on the
digipak cover, he is seen wearing a grey/off white cap and a black hoodie. He is also seen wearing
jewellery such as earrings in the music video like on the front cover of the digipak.
 The text of the artists name and song name in the video is the same as on the digipak, and I also make
the title of the song red linking to the red Chinese writing on the digipak.
 The colour theme of purple on the digipak, (colour of royalty, play on words with the title of the album
being loyalty) is obviously carried over to the advert as the digipak cover is on it, but this colour theme is
also carried on in to the video as the sky is seen with a purple colouring various times throughout the
video. I chose for purple to be a theme as it is a colour that represents wealth, and as well as stardom
(another reference made in the video with starry skies) this is something the artist is trying to achieve and
is a want or desire of rappers.
 The darkness is a theme that carries on into the music video as I colour corrected some shots in the edit
to give a conventional dark look to the music video.
 The music video also includes a lot of scenes taking place in urban locations, this is referenced on the
back cover of the digipak.
How effective is the combination of your
main and ancillary texts?
 The synergy I have created between my main text and its two ancillary’s I believe is very strong.
 When making my ancillary texts, I thought it was very important for them to link to my music video, as
these are the texts that would entice my audience to watch the music video, so having good synergy
between the texts, and so they really represented the music video well was the most important factor in
the creation of these texts.
What have you learned from your audience
feedback?
 The draft of my products that was first released on my
blog was the first draft for my music video.
 The video was not fully completed but I wanted to gain
feedback to see what my audience thought of it so far
and if it was keeping to their expectations.
 I showed it to a group of people in a sort of screening
scenario as I wanted to gain feedback. The people I
showed it to were fans of the UK rap music genre (so my
audience) and also media creators of a similar skill level to
me. I chose to show the draft to these two categories of
people as my audience would say what they like about
the music video in terms of a conventional UK rap text,
and the media creators will say what they like and what
could be improved from a production and creative point
of view. And so I believe these groups are from whom I
can receive the best feedback from. There were 5 UK rap
fans and 5 media creators in the screening of the draft I
had. The way I received my feedback from them was I got
them to sit in their respected groups together and once
the screening had finished I got them to discuss the video
and then give me a few positives and negatives. Here's
what they said...
My response to this was In terms of the negatives and what they would like to see improved
about the video was to take on board and add all these features into my video, apart from the
adding more people suggestion. Although this is conventional of UK rap videos, the song title
and the lyrics of the song relate to the artist having to 'lay low' so a group of people around him
would not really match the lyrics.
What have you learned from your audience
feedback?
 The improvements from group two were
interesting. It's obvious more shots will be
included in the completed draft of my music
video, but I did not see it necessary to include
as many as they implied. They suggested I
needed a lot of shots so I can use straight cuts
to make the video fast paced. Now this is
usually conventional of UK rap because of the
fast pace of the music so the edit of the music
video is also fast paced to match the music,
however the pace of the music is slow for the
song I have used in my music video so I
decided to make my music video less fast
paced to match the music. What they said
about the shot with the car I completely agreed
with. I think for the narrative of my music video
and the background of the artist it made sense
to break conventions in this instance as an up
and coming teen UK rap artist would not have a
vehicle like this. (Plus the predictability of
whether it would be there if I needed it again
would be hard to monitor as it was just a
random car in a car park).
What have you
learned from
your audience
feedback?
What have you learned from
your audience feedback?
 The next text I received feedback on was my magazine
advert
 To gain feedback on this, I again held a focus group of
media students/creators who are at a similar skill to me,
and also fans of UK rap(so my audience).
 I was quite lucky when making this draft as I created is a
product that my audience like due to it being conventional
and similar to advert they would see from their favourite
artists, meaning there was not a lot to improve. I decided
to not take on the second improvement of adding more
colour to the background as black background is inspired
by Drake’s advert for his album ‘Take Care’ and I believe
adding more colour wouldn't make the advert as effective.
 I thought the improvement of letting the audience know
where they can buy the album from was something very
important for the advert and made me glad I chose to
receive feedback otherwise I may have forgotten to put
include this very important factor of an advert.
What have you learned from your
audience feedback?
 I next uploaded a second draft of my music video to
my blog and did the same as before by having a
screening in front of 5 amateur media creators and 5
UK rap fans and got them to discuss in their groups
and then give me feedback what they liked and would
change/improve about my music video.
 The negatives/improvements group 1 gave are all
things I ended up including in the final draft of my
music video. I added more effects to the sky in shots
and I included a narrative sequence for that exact
reason they said; it will explain the lyrics of the song
well.
What have you learned from your audience feedback?
 Colour correcting my shots was advice I
definitely took on board and did to give the
dark conventional feel to the music video and
I also changed the shot of the lip syncing that
did not match as it looked very
unprofessional. But other than that I was
pretty happy with my screening as both
groups seemed to be impressed with the
performance aspect so far and a with a few
minor changes and the addition of the
narrative sequence I believe I have a music
video that is very conventional to UK rap and
one that is well constructed.
What have you learned from your
audience feedback?
 Final Feedback
 After the screening of my final draft I made a survey for
the viewers to fill out. This was conducted by having
several UK rap fans and several media creators sit
down, watch the final draft of my music video and then
fill out a survey I created on SurveyMonkey.
 The first question was "Would you categorise this
music video in the music genre of UK Rap? If not why?"
Everyone answered yes for this question, which was
satisfying as it pointed in the right direction of
conformation that I made a conventional UK Rap media
text which I set out to do.
What have you learned from your audience feedback?
 The second question was "Do you believe this video kept to
conventions of UK Rap music videos?“
 70% of people said yes to the question and 30% said
sometimes. I think this 7:3 ratio is the perfect way to describe
analytically how I stuck to conventions, as for the most part I
did try to stick to conventions of the genre but as I have
evidenced and reasoned in my blog, there were certain factors I
wanted and needed to change for the success of my music
video. And as the genre theorist Steve Neale said " genre that
uses repetition won't attract audiences, the genre needs to
evolve with the audience" and that is exactly what I did in that
30% of the video where I didn't follow conventions. I evolved
from just UK rap and blended in features and conventions from
new-school American hip-hop such as the colour of the sky
reflecting emotions and as the singularity of the artist is not
common in UK rap they usually have an entourage, put I
changed this for the video to match the song. The fact no one
sad no further proves I made an overall conventional media
text.
What have you learned from your
audience feedback?
 The third question was "Did you connect with the
artist/protagonist in the video? Why and how?" I asked this
question as in terms of Vladimir Propp's character theory the artist
would be the 'hero' and for films or sequences with a main
character to be successful they generally need to be relateble. And
also one of my goals when creating this was for the audience to be
able to connect and relate to it.
 Apart from one everyone answered yes to this question and some
going in further detail saying they were aware of how the artist was
effected by what he witnessed. This is exactly what I wanted to the
audience to be able to see as the narrative sequence is a situation
(maybe sometimes not as extreme) a lot of young people in urban
areas are put in by 'friends' and my music video shows how young
people feel they have to keep quite and protect these 'friends' and
how it effects them and how that 'friend' is then no longer there
for them.
What have you learned from your
audience feedback?
 The fourth question on my feedback survey was "Did you
understand how the video linked with the songs lyrics?" I asked
this question as in the creation of my music video, I thought it
was important for the music video to link to the lyrics of the
song and convey the message the artist was giving in the song,
as music videos are visual representations of the artists work.
 Everyone but one person understood how the song and the
video linked and this I was so happy about. This was and is the
main purpose of the music video and for this to be recognised
and appreciated by my audience shows I have been successful
in the creation of my text. This was especially something I was
happy about as adding in a narrative was and uncommon and
unconventional thing to do in a UK rap music video however
my audience did want it and it worked.
What have you learned from your audience
feedback?
 The fifth question I asked was "Did
you like and would you
recommend the music video?“
 This question was asked for
obvious reasons, as obviously I
want my text to be liked by my
audience and a staggering 90%
said they not only liked but would
recommend my music video.
What have you learned from
your audience feedback?
 The last question I asked was "What would you change
about the music video?" Here are all the answers...
 As you can see, a very common suggestion for
improvement was the camera quality and I fully agree.
Next time I make a media product I will try to make the
camera quality better bu it is down to what I had access
too and the camera I have is not particularly high spec so
the video quality was the best I could do. Some people
suggest more effects to do with I presume transitions as
that is conventional mainly in grime but sometimes UK
rap too. As cool as those transitions are, I don't think a
repeated amount would really really suit my music video
as that pace wouldn't match the song.
What have you learned from your
audience feedback?
 What would I change?
 If I was to make my music video again the main thing I would defiantly change is
the camera quality. This is something my audience have suggested and good
camera quality is very important in UK rap music video as it shows spectacle
which is important all across hip-hop as it is a very good way to show importance
and show how good the artist is. And also having a good quality media product,
no matter what it is be it music video, film etc the camera quality being good is
always aesthetically pleasing so this is defiantly something I would change.
 Another thing I would change a bit is the edit. Not a great deal but what I would
do is neaten up transitions and make them quicker making them look more
effective.
What have you learned from your
audience feedback?
 Summary of responses
 To conclude all of my responses from my audience and amateur media creators, I
think it has been evidenced I have made a media text that is conventional to the
UK rap genre and have done this by researching and listening to what the
audience want and expect to see, and by taking this knowledge and mixing it with
production techniques to make a successful product.
 From my audience feedback it is apparent I have also made a text that the
audience connect with as they understand the link between the video and the
song and understand the position the artist or protagonist has been put in as it is
a situation that my audience is likely to be able to relate to on some scale.
How did you use new media technologies in the construction and
research, planning and evaluation stages?
 Research
 When I was conducting my research the primary media technology I used was YouTube. YouTube is a streaming site where
anyone is able to upload videos for free. This ranges from a young amateur media creators such as me, to major artist and
record labels- these were who concerned me when I was researching hip-hop then further into UK rap. I watched multiple
music videos on this site from various hip-hop artists to get an understanding of the conventions.
 Another media technology I used was of course WordPress. This is the site I documented all my coursework on through
various blog posts.
 I used the king of all search engines Google when researching anything to do with my course, from the start when I was
choosing what media text to make, sites that gave me information of media theory, and I used it to find magazine adverts and
digipaks that I was researching.
 I used the website SurveyMonkey to create a survey to find out who my target audience where and what they wanted to see in
my music video. This media technology was very helpful as it allowed me to connect with my audience and find out allowed
me to work out which sub genre of hip-hop would be best to create and what the content of it should be.
How did you use new media
technologies in the construction and
research, planning and evaluation
stages?
 Planning
 In the planning stages of my media products I again used google
as a the pioneering piece of technology. I used it to find templates
of Storyboards to print off and used it to access google to do
research into planning documents.
 This stage also introduced my first interaction with premiere pro
on this course, as I used this software to make my animatic. I did
this by taking pictures of each individual shot from my storyboard
and transferring them from my phone on to my laptop where I
could then edit them in sequence on premiere pro with the song I
was going to be using in the actual video playing in the
background. I also included transitions where I planned for them
to be in the video.
 Another technology I used in this stage as well as the research
stage was the website WordPress which was used to document all
my planning documents.
How did you use new media technologies in the
construction and research, planning and evaluation
stages?
 Construction
 For the construction of my ancillary texts, I used the photo editing software Adobe Photoshop. This allowed me to create the correct
size templates for the magazine advert and digipak. I chose to use this software as it is much more professional than making these on
say Microsoft Word or PowerPoint as you can play with colours in much more detail and create a much more professional product. I
also used this software for the creation of my Instagram advert as I was able to mask over the screenshot I had took on my phone
and imported to my laptop and make it look as if it was an advert for my album by putting a picture of the album cover on and
erasing the previous text and adding new text.
 The camera I used to film my main task was a Sony HDR-CX240E. It is a relatively basic camera costing about £120 however it did
shoot in 720p quality so it worked fine to film my music video.
 The software I used to edit my music video on was Adobe Photoshop. I already had previous knowledge of how to use this software
as I used it for my animatic and I was also the editor in my group at AS Media and we used this software to edit so I had a fair bit of
previous knowledge. I chose this software as it is much more professional that say iMovie and would not have been able to create the
shots where the sky changes colour or the effect with the gun, and as I said I was already familiar with this software so I did not have
to waste time learning how to use a new one.
 I used YouTube a lot to help me in this stage as I watched photoshop and premiere tutorials. I already knew how to use both
software's, however I watched this tutorials to give me new editing techniques and ideas or if I had an idea in my head but didn’t
quite know how to rerate it on the software I turned to these tutorials, they were a great help.
 WordPress was again used to document these products.
 I also used the social media app snapchat to send drafts of my ancillary texts to fellow media students to gain feedback. This worked
very well as I was able to easily screenshot there response and upload the image on to my blog through the WordPress app.
How did you use new media technologies in the
construction and research, planning and evaluation
stages?
 Evaluation
 Before making my evaluation, I made an audience feedback survey. This was
created to see how my audience responded to the final draft of my music video
and if they liked it. I again used the website SurveyMonkey to create this survey. I
sent the link to the audience members who were in the screening of the final
draft for them to fill it out.
 To make my evaluation I used Microsoft PowerPoint and shared it to my blog on
WordPress by uploading it to slide share. I also used google images and
screenshots of my products to put them in the evaluation PowerPoint.

A2 Media Evaluation

  • 1. A2 Media studies Evaluation LEWIS GRAY
  • 2. In what way does your media text use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?  The media product I have created belongs to the music genre, UK Rap. In the creation of my product I have used conventions of real media texts from the same genre and also developed and challenged conventions.  I was able to use, develop and challenge conventions of UK Rap as I did research into the media texts I was going to be creating (Music Video, digipak and magazine advert) from the genre.  Originally in the early stages of my research, I did research into 10 different hip- hop artists across many different sub genres of hip-hop looking at their music videos, magazine adverts and digipaks, as I was not yet sure what sub genre of hip hop I wanted for the genre of my music video. I split it up and looked at about two artists from each of these sub genres: Rap, Pop-Rap, Grime/UK Rap, Gangsta Rap, Trap, R&B.
  • 3. In what way does your media text use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?  What I gained from my research was an insight to what is conventional across all of hip-hop. This was…  The artist is dominant and the main feature of the music video, digipak and magazine advert  Street clothing and Jewellery is a main accessory in the mise-en-scene  Low angle shots to make the artist look intimidating  Objectification of women
  • 4. In what way does your media text use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?  After I did research into all of hip-hop, it was clear to me what sub genre I wanted to use for the creation of my sub genre, this being Grime/UK Rap. As I explained on my blog, the reason I researched these two slightly different styles of music as one is because the culture is exactly the same, with many artists making both types of music, meaning the conventions in the music videos are exactly the same. Here are what I found were the conventions of UK Rap and Grime  Heavily performance based  located in urban areas  includes the artist  Have a dark theme  crime  Image of the artist is the main factor on the digipak cover  Digipaks are very simple  NOT MANY MAGAZINE ADVERTS but when advertised in a magazine, Artist is the main feature- to show their importance  Large entourage  Objectification of women  Shots such as low angles to make artists look intimidating  Fast past transitions and flashes in the music videos  Many use fade transitions at the end of the videos
  • 5. In what way does your media text use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?  My music video is performance narrative hybrid. This is a little unconventional as most UK Rap music videos are just performance however this is not true for all as the music video for ‘On The Go’ is a performance narrative hybrid. When watching this video I found the narrative aspect made the video much more engaging as he audience is following a story which makes them connect to the artist as well s just watching the perform. This video defiantly inspired me to make my music video a hybrid.  When it came to planning my music video through the storyboard, I took Andrew Goodwin’s theory of the relationship between the music and visuals in to consideration as I wanted to make a music video that he would coin ‘illustrate’, meaning the video links to the songs lyrics. It conveys the meaning of the song and genre and through this I was able to present the big issue of crime that surrounds young people in urban UK culture.
  • 6. In what way does your media text use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?  My music video also followed conventions by being located in very urban settings. The first shot is of the artist in a car park with a big building in the background. There are also various shots of the artist with a tower block in the background and the narrative sequence takes place in a skate park.  In terms of shots my video has many shots of the artist from low angles to make him look intimidating.  My music video has transitions that fade out at the end. This is seen in a lot at the end of UK Rap and Grime music videos so I decided to include it so my audience will know they are approaching the end of the video. White flashes are another type of transition I included as they are seen a lot in grime music videos to match the fast pace of the music. Although the song I used is slow, the white flash transitions are used for the narrative aspect to make it fast and build tension.  The artist is seen to be wearing jewellery such as earrings and chains as these are conventional in the mise-en-scene of the genre.
  • 7. In what way does your media text use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?  I’ve talked about how I kept to conventions in my music video, but how did I break them?  One very common convention in UK Rap/Grime music, and in fact all of hip-hop is the objectification of woman, this is something I decided not to include as it is not something I agree with so I did not want to represent it in my music video.  In UK Rap and Grime music videos the artist is usually seen with a large group of friends or an entourage. This is not the case in my music video and there is a reason for this. As I said earlier I wanted to make my music video to link to Andrew Goodwin’s theory and make it ‘illustrate’ so that it would link to the lyrics. The song is called “Layin’ Low” and the narrative is about the artist witnessing a crime and having to ‘lay low’ so a shot with a large group or entourage would not really make sense.
  • 8. In what way does your media text use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?  Colour  The inspiration to the colour of my music video came from the editor J Mornix.  He was the editor for AJ Tracey’s music video ‘LA4AWEEK’ and when I saw how he changed the colour of the sky in the edit I just wanted this in my music video.  This inspiration for the colour of the sky also came from the new school American hip-hop. Lil Uzi Vert’s music video for ‘XO TOUR Llif3’ makes use of the colour of the sky being changed and I believe it is really effective and portrays emotion. Emotions of fear, anxiety and sadness are feelings I tried to portray in my music video and I believe the colour of the sky helped and added to the effectiveness of the portrayal of these feelings.  Although I included bright and vibrant skies in my music video, I also put filters over the shots to make the shots look darker as this darkness in the video is a convention of UK Rap/Grime. However in this instance I developed conventions of UK rap by mixing the conventional darkness with the emotic colours of new school American hip-hop.
  • 9. In what way does your media text use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?  My digipak was conventional of UK Rap/Grime digipaks and also hip-hop digipaks as a whole.  After my research, I made a plan for my digipak, to have the artist as the main feature on the front as this is very conventional and seen on nearly all UK rap and hip-hop digipak covers. The clothing is also conventional as he is wearing a hoodie, a cap backwards and earrings. I also decided I wanted it to be cartoon. This is something that has become very popular in hip-hop digipaks over the recent years so having this feature would make my digipak feel modern. It is something tat is very popular especially in new school hip-hop which is an area I am using to develop the common conventions of my genre of hip-hop (UK Rap) so this style for my digipak was a no-brainer.  Another convention of modern UK Rap/Grime digipaks is that the are very simple. This is because of new media technologies not many people buy hard copies of albums anymore, instead they stream online. Most modern UK Rap/Grime albums just have plain black panels for the inside panels. These black panels also serve well as they help the theme of darkness which is a convention in UK Rap/Grime flow through the digipak.  The text I used for the album name and artists name fits the genre perfectly. It resembles urban graffiti text which is very conventional due to the massive link between grime and urban culture. The text that inspired me for this text was not actually one I did research on, but instead a text I had previous knowledge of, this is the digiapak cover for Bugzy Malone’s album ‘Walk With Me’.  I also used text down the side which resembled Chinese style writing. This was inspired from a mixture of the Chinese text used on UK Rapper Scarlxrd’s album ‘Chaxsthexry’ and the writing down the side was actually inspired from pop star Justin Biebers album cover ‘Purpose’.  The back cover of the digipak is very conventional, the names of the songs on the album are listed down the middle and an image of buildings is at the bottom, linking to the urban conventions. I also included palm trees as they represent luxury, something all young rappers aspire to.  Images of stars are present throughout the digipak, this is because they represent the artist wanting to become a star, and also links to the artists name.
  • 10. In what way does your media text use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?  My magazine advert was very conventional. I took inspiration from primarily two magazine adverts I had looked at in my research. This was the advert for Drakes album ‘Take Care’ and the advert for Stormzy’s album ‘Gang Sings and Prayer’.  Drakes album inspired me the most, simply because of the clean and simple layout. over 1/3rd of the advert is taken up by an image of the album cover, in my opinion this is very important as a lot of album covers I looked at did not even relate to the album at all it was just a random picture of the artist, you had to look further into the text to find out the had released an album, but this type of advert lets you know that upon first glance.  Then the artists name takes up just under 1/3rd of the advert at the top making it very clear to the audience who the artist is and links to the conventions of making the artist look important.  At the bottom the final 1/3rd of the advert is again text, but here it gives the logistics of the album, such as release date, features on the album and where it is available.  What inspired me from the advert for Stormzy’s album was the text. It is very sleek and bold and easy to read, so I wanted text that resembled this on my advert. This would also keep conventions whilst I developed it by being inspired by an American rap advert.
  • 11. In what way does your media text use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?  INSTAGRAM ADVERT  When I was doing my research into music videos and the ancillary texts (digipak and magazine advert), I found it very hard to actually find magazine adverts of modern day hip-hop albums. This is because of the massive change the world has seen in terms of social media. In AS Media last year we studied the magazine industry and how much it has been affected by social media. Many magazines are out of circulation or circulation has massively dropped as people now use social media for what the would have once brought a magazine for, except social media is cheaper, quicker and more accessible than buying a magazine. So with magazine audiences moving to social media, so have the advertisers as these audiences are the people they are trying to reach. Using the example of music, people can now follow their favourite artists on social media to see what they are doing, so they do not need to read a magazine about it. And also channels on YouTube such as Linkup TV give up and coming artists the ability to upload their music videos on the channel to promote themselves, as opposed to having to pay for a shout out in a magazine.  Further more digipaks too are suffering as people no longer buy hardcopies of digipaks with the album on the CD anymore, they stream music and albums instead on apps such as Spotify or Apple Music. As I addressed earlier this is why focus is not given to the inside panels of digipaks because the main focus is on the front cover as this is what is seen when audiences stream songs from the album.  In terms of album advertisement, what I see a lot of is the paid sponsorship on social media such as on Instagram. What this is is an artist will pay for their album to appear on users timelines, this is the new alternative to a magazine advert in 2017/18.  Given this, I thought it would be conventional to make a social media advert for the digipak, as this is how most UK Rap/Grime albums are advertised now and I feel if this album was to be released to day and especially due to who the album is targeted at, it would be advertised through social media.
  • 12. How effective is the combination of your main and ancillary texts? ANCILLARY TEXT 1:DIGIPAK
  • 13. How effective is the combination of your main and ancillary texts? ANCILLARY TEXT 2: MAGAZINE ADVERT
  • 14. How effective is the combination of your main and ancillary texts?  Digipak  Upon analysis of my ancillary tests and main task I believe I have created a digipak which is very clear to my audience what the genre of music the album is.  The cartoon image of the artist is becoming very conventional in modern hip-hop and the clothing of the artist in this image evidences even more the conventions of hip-hop as he is dressed in street clothing with jewellery.  The sub genre of my products- UK rap becomes more clear through the urban graffiti style of text seen on the digipak, text that resembles other UK Rap digipaks such as Bugzy Malone’s album ‘Walk With Me’.  The buildings on the back cover link to the conventions in UK rap of an urban setting  I also use semiotics with the image of stars symbolising that the artist is a ‘star’ or pursuing ‘stardom’. This is a trait closely linked with rappers.  Even the title of the album represents the genre as “loyalty” is something rappers talk a lot about in their songs.  In the feedback I received from my target audience one comment on the digipak was “you have a good understanding of genre” showing I have meet my audiences expectations regrading a digipak for UK Rap.
  • 15. How effective is the combination of your main and ancillary texts?  Magazine Advert  My magazine advert too makes the genre of the album very clear to my audience through keeping to conventions.  The text used is bold and clear, resembling text seen on Stormzy’s digipak for ‘Gang Signs & Prayer’  The name of the artist is very dominant at the top, being conventional in the sense that his name is important, and his actually name too is conventional as hardly any rappers use their given birth name, instead nick names or stage names.  The advert shows off the artist himself in a great deal too as the digipak cover is the centre of attention on the advert, making the artist the centre of attention which is very common in UK rap adverts.  The platforms the song is available on also is conventional of UK Rap due to it being a modern genre, all UK Rap songs make use of streaming platforms to promote and play their music.  The advert and digipak combining well was something that was very important to me in the creation of these products, that’s why I used the front cover of the digipak on the advert to make it evident they were linked.
  • 16. How effective is the combination of your main and ancillary texts?  Combination of ancillary’s  As well as putting the digipak cover on the magazine advert, I kept the colour scheme of the advert the same as the album, using a black background on the advert (like the black panels in the digipak) to continue the dark theme through out the texts.  I also make refence to songs that are listed on the back of the album. (These songs and their features are pastiche to the real artist and his album who’s song I used for the song in my music video).  When I referenced the songs name on the advert I did it in the text seen on the album cover to show the link between the texts even further.  The importance of these texts linking was the first thing I had planned when constructing them as otherwise the promotion by the advert for the artist and his album would be worthless as the audience would not know what is was for. This is also why it was important to stick to conventions in these texts so my audience could identify the genre.
  • 17. How effective is the combination of your main and ancillary texts?  Music Video  I have good synergy between my ancillary texts and with my music video.  In the video the artist is seen in clothing resembling what the cartoon version of himself is wearing on the digipak cover, he is seen wearing a grey/off white cap and a black hoodie. He is also seen wearing jewellery such as earrings in the music video like on the front cover of the digipak.  The text of the artists name and song name in the video is the same as on the digipak, and I also make the title of the song red linking to the red Chinese writing on the digipak.  The colour theme of purple on the digipak, (colour of royalty, play on words with the title of the album being loyalty) is obviously carried over to the advert as the digipak cover is on it, but this colour theme is also carried on in to the video as the sky is seen with a purple colouring various times throughout the video. I chose for purple to be a theme as it is a colour that represents wealth, and as well as stardom (another reference made in the video with starry skies) this is something the artist is trying to achieve and is a want or desire of rappers.  The darkness is a theme that carries on into the music video as I colour corrected some shots in the edit to give a conventional dark look to the music video.  The music video also includes a lot of scenes taking place in urban locations, this is referenced on the back cover of the digipak.
  • 18. How effective is the combination of your main and ancillary texts?  The synergy I have created between my main text and its two ancillary’s I believe is very strong.  When making my ancillary texts, I thought it was very important for them to link to my music video, as these are the texts that would entice my audience to watch the music video, so having good synergy between the texts, and so they really represented the music video well was the most important factor in the creation of these texts.
  • 19. What have you learned from your audience feedback?  The draft of my products that was first released on my blog was the first draft for my music video.  The video was not fully completed but I wanted to gain feedback to see what my audience thought of it so far and if it was keeping to their expectations.  I showed it to a group of people in a sort of screening scenario as I wanted to gain feedback. The people I showed it to were fans of the UK rap music genre (so my audience) and also media creators of a similar skill level to me. I chose to show the draft to these two categories of people as my audience would say what they like about the music video in terms of a conventional UK rap text, and the media creators will say what they like and what could be improved from a production and creative point of view. And so I believe these groups are from whom I can receive the best feedback from. There were 5 UK rap fans and 5 media creators in the screening of the draft I had. The way I received my feedback from them was I got them to sit in their respected groups together and once the screening had finished I got them to discuss the video and then give me a few positives and negatives. Here's what they said... My response to this was In terms of the negatives and what they would like to see improved about the video was to take on board and add all these features into my video, apart from the adding more people suggestion. Although this is conventional of UK rap videos, the song title and the lyrics of the song relate to the artist having to 'lay low' so a group of people around him would not really match the lyrics.
  • 20. What have you learned from your audience feedback?  The improvements from group two were interesting. It's obvious more shots will be included in the completed draft of my music video, but I did not see it necessary to include as many as they implied. They suggested I needed a lot of shots so I can use straight cuts to make the video fast paced. Now this is usually conventional of UK rap because of the fast pace of the music so the edit of the music video is also fast paced to match the music, however the pace of the music is slow for the song I have used in my music video so I decided to make my music video less fast paced to match the music. What they said about the shot with the car I completely agreed with. I think for the narrative of my music video and the background of the artist it made sense to break conventions in this instance as an up and coming teen UK rap artist would not have a vehicle like this. (Plus the predictability of whether it would be there if I needed it again would be hard to monitor as it was just a random car in a car park).
  • 21. What have you learned from your audience feedback?
  • 22. What have you learned from your audience feedback?  The next text I received feedback on was my magazine advert  To gain feedback on this, I again held a focus group of media students/creators who are at a similar skill to me, and also fans of UK rap(so my audience).  I was quite lucky when making this draft as I created is a product that my audience like due to it being conventional and similar to advert they would see from their favourite artists, meaning there was not a lot to improve. I decided to not take on the second improvement of adding more colour to the background as black background is inspired by Drake’s advert for his album ‘Take Care’ and I believe adding more colour wouldn't make the advert as effective.  I thought the improvement of letting the audience know where they can buy the album from was something very important for the advert and made me glad I chose to receive feedback otherwise I may have forgotten to put include this very important factor of an advert.
  • 23. What have you learned from your audience feedback?  I next uploaded a second draft of my music video to my blog and did the same as before by having a screening in front of 5 amateur media creators and 5 UK rap fans and got them to discuss in their groups and then give me feedback what they liked and would change/improve about my music video.  The negatives/improvements group 1 gave are all things I ended up including in the final draft of my music video. I added more effects to the sky in shots and I included a narrative sequence for that exact reason they said; it will explain the lyrics of the song well.
  • 24. What have you learned from your audience feedback?  Colour correcting my shots was advice I definitely took on board and did to give the dark conventional feel to the music video and I also changed the shot of the lip syncing that did not match as it looked very unprofessional. But other than that I was pretty happy with my screening as both groups seemed to be impressed with the performance aspect so far and a with a few minor changes and the addition of the narrative sequence I believe I have a music video that is very conventional to UK rap and one that is well constructed.
  • 25. What have you learned from your audience feedback?  Final Feedback  After the screening of my final draft I made a survey for the viewers to fill out. This was conducted by having several UK rap fans and several media creators sit down, watch the final draft of my music video and then fill out a survey I created on SurveyMonkey.  The first question was "Would you categorise this music video in the music genre of UK Rap? If not why?" Everyone answered yes for this question, which was satisfying as it pointed in the right direction of conformation that I made a conventional UK Rap media text which I set out to do.
  • 26. What have you learned from your audience feedback?  The second question was "Do you believe this video kept to conventions of UK Rap music videos?“  70% of people said yes to the question and 30% said sometimes. I think this 7:3 ratio is the perfect way to describe analytically how I stuck to conventions, as for the most part I did try to stick to conventions of the genre but as I have evidenced and reasoned in my blog, there were certain factors I wanted and needed to change for the success of my music video. And as the genre theorist Steve Neale said " genre that uses repetition won't attract audiences, the genre needs to evolve with the audience" and that is exactly what I did in that 30% of the video where I didn't follow conventions. I evolved from just UK rap and blended in features and conventions from new-school American hip-hop such as the colour of the sky reflecting emotions and as the singularity of the artist is not common in UK rap they usually have an entourage, put I changed this for the video to match the song. The fact no one sad no further proves I made an overall conventional media text.
  • 27. What have you learned from your audience feedback?  The third question was "Did you connect with the artist/protagonist in the video? Why and how?" I asked this question as in terms of Vladimir Propp's character theory the artist would be the 'hero' and for films or sequences with a main character to be successful they generally need to be relateble. And also one of my goals when creating this was for the audience to be able to connect and relate to it.  Apart from one everyone answered yes to this question and some going in further detail saying they were aware of how the artist was effected by what he witnessed. This is exactly what I wanted to the audience to be able to see as the narrative sequence is a situation (maybe sometimes not as extreme) a lot of young people in urban areas are put in by 'friends' and my music video shows how young people feel they have to keep quite and protect these 'friends' and how it effects them and how that 'friend' is then no longer there for them.
  • 28. What have you learned from your audience feedback?  The fourth question on my feedback survey was "Did you understand how the video linked with the songs lyrics?" I asked this question as in the creation of my music video, I thought it was important for the music video to link to the lyrics of the song and convey the message the artist was giving in the song, as music videos are visual representations of the artists work.  Everyone but one person understood how the song and the video linked and this I was so happy about. This was and is the main purpose of the music video and for this to be recognised and appreciated by my audience shows I have been successful in the creation of my text. This was especially something I was happy about as adding in a narrative was and uncommon and unconventional thing to do in a UK rap music video however my audience did want it and it worked.
  • 29. What have you learned from your audience feedback?  The fifth question I asked was "Did you like and would you recommend the music video?“  This question was asked for obvious reasons, as obviously I want my text to be liked by my audience and a staggering 90% said they not only liked but would recommend my music video.
  • 30. What have you learned from your audience feedback?  The last question I asked was "What would you change about the music video?" Here are all the answers...  As you can see, a very common suggestion for improvement was the camera quality and I fully agree. Next time I make a media product I will try to make the camera quality better bu it is down to what I had access too and the camera I have is not particularly high spec so the video quality was the best I could do. Some people suggest more effects to do with I presume transitions as that is conventional mainly in grime but sometimes UK rap too. As cool as those transitions are, I don't think a repeated amount would really really suit my music video as that pace wouldn't match the song.
  • 31. What have you learned from your audience feedback?  What would I change?  If I was to make my music video again the main thing I would defiantly change is the camera quality. This is something my audience have suggested and good camera quality is very important in UK rap music video as it shows spectacle which is important all across hip-hop as it is a very good way to show importance and show how good the artist is. And also having a good quality media product, no matter what it is be it music video, film etc the camera quality being good is always aesthetically pleasing so this is defiantly something I would change.  Another thing I would change a bit is the edit. Not a great deal but what I would do is neaten up transitions and make them quicker making them look more effective.
  • 32. What have you learned from your audience feedback?  Summary of responses  To conclude all of my responses from my audience and amateur media creators, I think it has been evidenced I have made a media text that is conventional to the UK rap genre and have done this by researching and listening to what the audience want and expect to see, and by taking this knowledge and mixing it with production techniques to make a successful product.  From my audience feedback it is apparent I have also made a text that the audience connect with as they understand the link between the video and the song and understand the position the artist or protagonist has been put in as it is a situation that my audience is likely to be able to relate to on some scale.
  • 33. How did you use new media technologies in the construction and research, planning and evaluation stages?  Research  When I was conducting my research the primary media technology I used was YouTube. YouTube is a streaming site where anyone is able to upload videos for free. This ranges from a young amateur media creators such as me, to major artist and record labels- these were who concerned me when I was researching hip-hop then further into UK rap. I watched multiple music videos on this site from various hip-hop artists to get an understanding of the conventions.  Another media technology I used was of course WordPress. This is the site I documented all my coursework on through various blog posts.  I used the king of all search engines Google when researching anything to do with my course, from the start when I was choosing what media text to make, sites that gave me information of media theory, and I used it to find magazine adverts and digipaks that I was researching.  I used the website SurveyMonkey to create a survey to find out who my target audience where and what they wanted to see in my music video. This media technology was very helpful as it allowed me to connect with my audience and find out allowed me to work out which sub genre of hip-hop would be best to create and what the content of it should be.
  • 34. How did you use new media technologies in the construction and research, planning and evaluation stages?  Planning  In the planning stages of my media products I again used google as a the pioneering piece of technology. I used it to find templates of Storyboards to print off and used it to access google to do research into planning documents.  This stage also introduced my first interaction with premiere pro on this course, as I used this software to make my animatic. I did this by taking pictures of each individual shot from my storyboard and transferring them from my phone on to my laptop where I could then edit them in sequence on premiere pro with the song I was going to be using in the actual video playing in the background. I also included transitions where I planned for them to be in the video.  Another technology I used in this stage as well as the research stage was the website WordPress which was used to document all my planning documents.
  • 35. How did you use new media technologies in the construction and research, planning and evaluation stages?  Construction  For the construction of my ancillary texts, I used the photo editing software Adobe Photoshop. This allowed me to create the correct size templates for the magazine advert and digipak. I chose to use this software as it is much more professional than making these on say Microsoft Word or PowerPoint as you can play with colours in much more detail and create a much more professional product. I also used this software for the creation of my Instagram advert as I was able to mask over the screenshot I had took on my phone and imported to my laptop and make it look as if it was an advert for my album by putting a picture of the album cover on and erasing the previous text and adding new text.  The camera I used to film my main task was a Sony HDR-CX240E. It is a relatively basic camera costing about £120 however it did shoot in 720p quality so it worked fine to film my music video.  The software I used to edit my music video on was Adobe Photoshop. I already had previous knowledge of how to use this software as I used it for my animatic and I was also the editor in my group at AS Media and we used this software to edit so I had a fair bit of previous knowledge. I chose this software as it is much more professional that say iMovie and would not have been able to create the shots where the sky changes colour or the effect with the gun, and as I said I was already familiar with this software so I did not have to waste time learning how to use a new one.  I used YouTube a lot to help me in this stage as I watched photoshop and premiere tutorials. I already knew how to use both software's, however I watched this tutorials to give me new editing techniques and ideas or if I had an idea in my head but didn’t quite know how to rerate it on the software I turned to these tutorials, they were a great help.  WordPress was again used to document these products.  I also used the social media app snapchat to send drafts of my ancillary texts to fellow media students to gain feedback. This worked very well as I was able to easily screenshot there response and upload the image on to my blog through the WordPress app.
  • 36. How did you use new media technologies in the construction and research, planning and evaluation stages?  Evaluation  Before making my evaluation, I made an audience feedback survey. This was created to see how my audience responded to the final draft of my music video and if they liked it. I again used the website SurveyMonkey to create this survey. I sent the link to the audience members who were in the screening of the final draft for them to fill it out.  To make my evaluation I used Microsoft PowerPoint and shared it to my blog on WordPress by uploading it to slide share. I also used google images and screenshots of my products to put them in the evaluation PowerPoint.
