CHALLENGES IMPLEMENTATION OF
SMART SCHOOL IN MALAYSIA
2
INTRODUCTION
i. To produce a knowledge society that is critical, creative
and innovative
ii. To bridge the digital divide
iii. To cultivate life-long learning based on ICT
iv. To produce technology savvy individuals for Information
Age
OBJECTIVES
• A Smart School is an educational establishment that
adopts instructional processes and educational
management practices to enable learners to surmount the
challenges posed by the information technology era.
• Smart Schools are equipped with computers and
appropriate software that offer potential for self-paced and
interactive learning.
LIMITED TECHNICAL SUPPORT
 ICT support or maintenance contracts in
schools help teachers to use ICT in
teaching without losing time fixing
software and hardware problems.
 Technical faults might discourage them
from using ICT in their teaching because
of the fear of equipment breaking down
during a lesson.
CHALLENGES IMPLEMENTATION OF SMART
SCHOOL IN MALAYSIA
LACK OF EFFECTIVE TRAINING
 Training programs do not focus on
teachers’ pedagogical practices in
relation to ICT but on developing ICT
skills.
 Inappropriate training leads to teachers
being neither sufficiently prepared nor
sufficiently confident to carry out full
integration of ICT in the classroom.
4
5
 Lack of computers and
appropriate software
 Some classes are very large and
teacher would have no access to
ICT materials because most of
these were shared with other
teachers.
LACK OF INFRASTRUCTURE
6
THE PRESSURE TO COMPLETE
HEAVY SYLLABUS AND EXAMINATION
 Teachers, students and parents very
concerned about achievement and
academic excellence.
 The heavy syllabus and preparing
for examinations.
 More focus on studying for the exam
7
THE ISSUE OF TIME CONSTRAINT
Due to problems such as :
• Inadequate computer equipment
• The classes were held in laboratories
• The computers’ technical problems
waste of classroom time
The inception of smart school in
Malaysia requires fully involvement
and cooperation of all the
stakeholders to overcome the
challenges effectively.
