Water is our most essential resource for life, the economy, and has no substitute. However, water demand is increasing with population growth while supply remains fixed. As water becomes scarcer, political conflicts are likely to emerge. Currently, many people live without access to clean water and infrastructure in the US and elsewhere is failing. Climate change will exacerbate water challenges. By 2050, half the world's population may face water stress. Solutions include conservation, reuse, technology advances, and better management of water as a valued resource rather than a right. Water prices will need to rise to reflect its true cost and value to shape sustainable use.

However, climate change impacts like sea level rise, cyclones, and flooding have increased migration to Dhaka, exacerbating overpopulation and lack of infrastructure in slum areas. Climate change is projected to severely impact Bangladesh through food insecurity and yield reductions due to water stress from rising temperatures and more extreme weather.

In 2021, Utah experienced one of its worst droughts in 20 years, forcing the Village Cooperative to pivot and focus on less water-intensive crops. While building healthy soil with compost has helped the farm withstand the drought, invasive weeds and high water prices subsidized by property taxes present unique challenges for urban farming in drought conditions.

Does Clean Water Make You Dirty
Bennett examines whether access to clean water reduces incentives for sanitation in Cebu, Philippines. Using panel data from 1983-2005, he finds:
1) A negative correlation between piped water access and sanitation levels, suggesting water and sanitation may be substitutes as clean water allows people to endure dirtier environments.
2) Increased diarrhea is associated with community access to piped water, consistent with reduced sanitation efforts. However, household access is linked to less diarrhea.
3) Instrumental variable models exploiting topological characteristics correlated with water access but not sanitation still find evidence that piped water reduces sanitation and increases diarrhea, indicating a causal relationship.

Carbon credits
Carbon credits are tradable permits that represent the right to emit one tonne of carbon dioxide. They create a market for reducing greenhouse gas emissions by giving a monetary value to polluting air. Carbon credits are generated through projects that sequester or reduce carbon emissions, such as afforestation or use of renewable energy. Countries can trade carbon credits through mechanisms established in the Kyoto Protocol to meet emission reduction targets or cover shortfalls. The Kyoto mechanisms allow credits to be earned from emission reduction projects in other countries. Carbon exchanges facilitate trading of credits between countries and private entities.
Ballast Water Thesis Experiment

For my training thesis I studied a totally "out of the box"-idea of extracting water from near-Earth asteroids. For Environmental sciences the idea of "resources" was assessed from a new and out-of-the-ordinary perspective.
The feasibility was evaluated by assessing the supply of water in the asteroids, the demand for water in space, the strategies for gaining the water from the asteroids and by comparing the space-originated water to the current strategy (of bringing it from Earth)

The feasibility was evaluated by assessing the supply of water in the asteroids, the demand for water in space, the strategies for gaining the water from the asteroids and by comparing the space-originated water to the current strategy (of bringing it from Earth)

Master's Thesis Slides
This thesis examines approximate dynamic programming methods for optimizing residential water heating systems. It formulates the water heating problem as a discrete-time, average cost periodic Markov decision process (MDP) to minimize operating costs and customer discomfort over an infinite horizon. The methodology section describes solving the MDP using finite-horizon dynamic programming and average cost dynamic programming for periodic MDPs via relative value iteration. Results from numerical simulations will evaluate different control policies, including set-point methods, temperature aggregation, and usage history aggregation. Extensions to solar water heating and automated demand response are also discussed.

Spread across several frames, the art is actually the rendering of real and speculative data. The stereographic projections change shape in response to prompts and provocations. Visitors interact with the model through speculative statements about how to increase savings across communities, regions, ecosystems and environments. Their fabulations combined with random noise, i.e. factors beyond control, have a dramatic effect on the societal transition. Things get better. Things get worse. The aim is to give visitors a new grasp and feel of the ongoing struggles in democracies around the world.
Stunning art in the small multiples format brings out the spatiotemporal nature of societal transitions, against backdrop issues such as energy, housing, waste, farmland and forest. In each frame we see hopeful and frightful interplays between spending and saving. Problems emerge when one of the two parts of the existential anaglyph rapidly shrinks like Arctic ice, as factors cross thresholds. Ecological wealth and intergenerational equity areFour at stake. Not enough spending could mean economic stress, social unrest and political conflict. Not enough saving and there will be climate breakdown and ‘bankruptcy’. So where does speculative design start and the gambling and betting end? Behind each fabular frame is a four ratio problem. Each ratio reflects the level of sacrifice and self-restraint a society is willing to accept, against promises of prosperity and freedom. Some values seem to stabilise a frame while others cause collapse. Get the ratios right and we can have it all. Get them wrong and things get more desperate.
