My Great Grandfather, Thomas Frank Benson, was an engineer in the R.A.F. during WWII, he was stationed all around the UK and then in 1944 he was told to go to India. It was at this time he wrote a diary and took a vast amount of photos, showing every day life in India from the end of 1944 to the start of 1946. In a time where travelling around the world was extremely difficult and very uncommon, he got the chance to see and experience a country completely alien to 40s Britain and this book uncovers the experiences and emotions he had.

2. 3rd August 1940 I finished school. It was a long day but I enjoyed it. My mum picked me up at school. When we were talking about what I learned today at school, the German troops attacked us! We went to the cellar quickly and stayed there but my father stayed outside to protect us. We were so scared. Then, we heard a shot. My mum told me that I had to stay in silence. When the troops went out I saw my father on the floor with blood on his body. I ran quickly to help him! But when I saw him I realized that he was dead. It was the worst day of my life.
3. 25th October 1942 The troops of Germany GERMAN TROOPS captured the parents of my friend Patricia MY FRIEND PATRICIA´S PARENTS , so, she stayed with my mum and me in my house. As Patricia was staying in our house, we had to work a lot to find food.
4. 2nd December 1942 My birthday 10 10TH BIRTHDAY came! I received a new diary! I was so happy. I invited some of my school friends. It was so cold but we enjoyed It a lot. My BIRTHDAY!!
5. 26th July 1943 Dear Diary, Today it’s the first day that we do an experiment. It was so interesting. Some friends were bored but the others paid attention. Today we learnT a lot ABOUT science .
6. 1945 The war finished!!! We celebrated a lot. All the people of Poland were celebrating. When I saw those people celebrating I started to cry because I was so excited. Then I hugged my mother and I started to celebrate with all the people
7. 74 years later...... Now I have three children and five grandchildren. Today I visited the tomb of my father. All the memories of my friends, the school and my parents came to my MIND. I miss those moments when I used to play with my friends and when my father or my mother took me TO school. Those were the best moments of my life.
