india on 24 january 1950. It was first sung on 27 december 1911 at
the calcutta session of the Indian National Congress.
• A formal rendition of the national anthem takes 52 sec. A shortened
version consisting of the first and last lines taking about 20 sec to play
and is also staged occasionally.
Lyrics
The poem is written in a literary register of the Bengali language called
sadhu bhasa. The song has been written almost entirely using nouns
that also can function as verbs. Most of the nouns of the song are in
use in all major languages in India. Therefore, the original song is quite
clearly understandable, and in fact, remains almost unchanged in
several widely different Indian languages.

National supremacy

anthem before the feature film starts and all present in the hall are
obliged to stand up to show respect to the national anthem” as a part
of their “sacred obligation”.
• Discarding notions of “any different notion or the perception of
individual rights”, a bench of Justices added that the movie screen
shall have the image of the national flag when the anthem is being
played and that doors of the halls will remain shut during the anthem
so that no disturbance is caused.
National vision
• “The directions are issued, for love and respect for the motherland is
reflected when one shows respect to the National Anthem as well as
to the National Flag. That apart, it would instil the feeling within one,
a sense committed patriotism and nationalism,” said the bench of
justice.
National obligations
• Every citizens of the country must realize that they live in a nation
and are duty bound to show respect to National Anthem, which is the
symbol of the constitutional patriotism and inherent national quality.
• when the National Anthem is sung or played, it is imperative on the
part of every one present to show due respect and honour.
• when the National Anthem is sung, the concept of protocol
associated with it has its inherent roots in national identity, national
integrity and constitutional patriotism.
