How does modifying diet such as taking probiotics alter the gut microbiome and influence on health? Dr. Anders Henriksson, principal application specialist shares more here.
Current evidence suggests that Human Milk Oligosaccharides (HMO) plays a role in promoting immune health in infants through changes to the microbiome. Angela Lim, senior manager, global regulatory affairs lead, HMO shares on the science behind it, and the opportunities and challenges that lie ahead.
Probiotics with documented health benefits give
dairies a huge opportunity to stand out on the yogurt
market in Southeast Asia. But there are challenges to
overcome, writes DR. ANDERS HENRIKSSON.
Dr. Nicholas West, Research Fellow from Griffith University sharing the clinical evidence from DuPont and the role of its range of probiotics at APP 2016, Gold Coast, Australia.

What do we really know about the interaction between breastmilk and the infant microbiome? Research shows that the newborn gut microbiome — the trillions of bacteria that live within the intestinal tract of newborns — plays a critical role in proper immune and metabolic development as well as meeting the newborn’s nutritional needs. Disruption of the newborn gut microbiome can cause both acute and chronic health consequences. Based on novel discoveries of the unique partnership between mammalian milk and B. infantis, Evolve has pioneered a microbiome-based approach to solving newborn gut dysbiosis.
Association Between Bio-fortification and Child Nutrition Among Smallholder H...Premier Publishers
We explored the empirical relationship between bio-fortification and child nutrition in Uganda. The research expanded the traditional approach used to address child nutrition by including in the model a categorical dependent variable for a household growing bio-fortified crop varieties. We used three waves of panel data from the Feed. The Future Innovation Lab for Nutrition, collected from 6 districts in Uganda. We performed univariate analysis and also estimated a panel logistic regression model to study the association between child stunting and production of bio-fortified crop varieties among smallholder farmers in Uganda. The results confirmed a very strong association between production of bio-fortified crop varieties and child stunting among children aged 0-59 months of age. The strength of the relationship, however was insensitive to the number of bio-fortified crop varieties grown by a particular household. Other important covariates of child stunting were male gender, 24-59 months age bracket, child birth weight, dietary diversity, education of caregiver, antenatal care, household size, access to improved water and household livestock score. These results can be used to vindicate current government policy of promoting production of bio-fortified crop varieties and underscore the need for intensified efforts to promote bio-fortification as a complementary means of addressing long-term child malnutrition in Uganda.

Lactobacillus Pro-t-action is a revolutionary innovation of the German BASF Future Business GmbH company, developed from probiotic cultures of the L. paracasei bacteria. The special characteristic of Pro-t-action is that it reacts only with the cavity-causing bacteria, and it does not affect the number of other bacteria in the mouth. According to the recent studies presented at international conferences, Lactobacillus pro-t-action reduces the number of S. mutans bacteria, the most responsible pathogens in forming cavities, to even up to 50% if used daily. The new toothpaste Plidenta Pro-t-action was developed by the experts in Croatian based company Neva, an Atlantic Group member, as the first toothpaste in the world to contain this probiotic culture. The clinical testing conducted by doc.dr.sc. Dubravka Negovetić Vranić and prof.dr.sc. Martina Majstorović was the first such testing of a toothpaste with the probiotic Lactobacillus paracasei bacteria in the world. The Ministry of Health and Social Welfare of the Republic of Croatia listed Plidenta Pro-t-action toothpaste as a special use cosmetics.
This trial aimed to evaluate the efficacy and safety of vitamin D supplementation on the residual moderate and deep pockets following nonsurgical periodontal therapy.
This short course reveals some of the studies that show how oral health affects systemic health. Inflammation is the root cause of all the trouble, and the mouth is the most under evaluated sources of the inflammation.

3. Gingivitis and Periodontitis
▪ The oral cavity is home to more
than 700 different bacterial
species
▪ Biofilms are formed by bacterial
communities which reside in
saliva-covered soft and hard
tissues
▪ Oral biofilms are associated
with infectious diseases such
as tooth decay (caries) and
periodontal disease
Gingivitis
Gingivitis can cause dusky red, swollen,
tender gums that bleed easily, especially
when you brush your teeth.
Healthy gums Severe periodontitis
(more than 6 mm pockets)
- Extensive bone and
tissue loss, teeth can
become loose
Gingivitis
(2-3 mm pockets)
- gums become red
and bleed easily
Moderate
periodontitis
(4-6 mm pockets)
- gum recession, bone
and tissue destruction
Periodontitis
Periodontitis is a severe gum infection
that can lead to tooth loss and other
serious health complications.

FIGURE. Prevalence of total, mild, moderate, and severe periodontitis among adults aged ≥30 years, by age — National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, United
States, 2009–2010. This figure is a line graph that presents periodontitis in adults aged ≥30 years by level of severity (i.e., total mild, moderate, and severe). This figure
demonstrates that the prevalence of mild and severe periodontitis remained relatively steady at <15% across all age groups.
