A practical guide for how you can take the high level constructs of design thinking and apply them in real life. First presented at the 2016 Grand Rapids Design Thinking meetup.

Lessons-learned from embedding design into a developmental evaluation: The si...Chi Yan Lam, CE
Presented at the 2015 Annual Conference of the American Evaluation Association #eval15. ABSTRACT: Recent attempts at developmental evaluation (DE) are incorporating human-centered design (HCD) principles (Dorst, 2011; IDEO, n.d.) to facilitate program development. HCD promotes a design-oriented stance toward program development and articulates a set of values that focuses the evaluation beyond those ideals expressed by stakeholders. Embedding design into DE promises to offer a more powerful means to promoting program development beyond either approach alone. Yet, embedding design into DE introduces additional challenges. Drawing on a case study into a design-informed DE, this panelist discusses the tensions and challenges that arose as one developmental evaluator attempted to introduce design into a DE. Insights from the case study point to the importance of:
- Attending to power dynamics that could stifle or promote design integration; and,
- Evaluator sensitivity over the deep attachment program developers had over program decisions
These findings allude to the significance of organizational culture in enabling a design-informed DE.

Visualization tools and methods from service design was used to create an «Engagement tool-kit» that applied visualization extensively. The aim was to bring a starting point for boosting staff engagement in a social business and give substance to ideas that the case company could realize".

Holistic experience design (HxD) for Nasdaq Proconf 2015Fritz Desir
A rapid fire talk I gave on an evolving area I've been studying which I call Holistic Experience Design. HxD eschews silo thinking whether at the team level (dept vs. dept vs. agency vs. consultant) or at the artifact level (service vs. product) to look at what can be made by combining.
It is still a work in progress. Feedback welcomed.

- Gained a better understanding of the rules of UI composition including Consistency, Patterns, and Hierarchy. This will save you time during UI design creation and strive for a perfect implementation the first time around.
- Learned to understand what a developer looks for in a quality design work and how it can differ from a developer's perspective.
- Were taught the ability to recognize issues in visual UI and be able to fix them without your designer’s direction. As a result, more autonomy when implementing UI

People are tired of talking heads, being told what and how to do things. We have access to information, what we need is the opportunity to make sense of our experiences, to converse, to connect and to create together. In the experience economy, every time we meet face to face is a wonderful opportunity to be delighted by discovering something new for ourselves. If you are a Manager, a Trainer, Consultant, Event Manager - knowing how to design so that people experience creating and discovering new knowledge is imperative for engagement and innovation.

Learning Solutions_Cammy Bean_Best Practices for Accidental Instructional Des...Cammy Bean
Session slides from a live, in-person session at Learning Solutions in Orlando on April 20, 2022.
Many of us found our way into the corporate training/learning field quite by accident. If you're an accidental instructional designer, how do you build a career with purpose and passion?
A resilient organizational can not only adapt and respond to incremental change but more importantly, can respond to sudden disruptions and also, be the source of disruption in order to prosper and flourish.
The traditional risk management approach focuses too much on defensive (stopping bad things happen) thinking versus a more progressive (making good things happen) thinking. Being defensive requires consistency across the organization and this is where methodologies like Plan-Do-Check-Act (PDCA) come in. However, PDCA approach does not bake in the required progressive thinking and flexibility required for a fast company organization which operates in a volatile environment.
Professor David Denyer of Cranfield University has recently published a very interesting research report on Organizational Resilience. He has identified the following four quadrants across to help us think about organizational resilience:
* preventative control (defensive consistency)
* mindful action (defensive flexibility)
* performance optimization (progressive consistency)
* adaptive innovation (progressive flexibility)
In this talk, I'll share my personal experience of using this thinking to help an organization to scale their product to Millions of users. I've dive deep into how we structured our organization for Structural Agility and how we set-up a very lightweight governance model using OKRs to drive the necessary flexible and progressive thinking.

HOW TO ADVOCATE FOR INBOUND BUDGET & UPSELL YOUR EXISTING ACCOUNTS [INBOUND 2...HubSpot
In this session Drew Himel from PCR Agency will walk you through how his agency added close to $500,000 in new revenue in less than 8 months through upselling his existing client base and helped PCR become the fastest partner ever to reach Platinum. The session will cover the exact process PCR used to identify which clients were great candidates for upselling to Inbound Marketing and which clients they realized were profit suckers and how they handled each. Once you have identified which clients are the best fit for inbound marketing the next step is coming up with a well organized sales approach. You will walk away from this session with the exact questions PCR used, what documents and presentations they presented to advocate for an Inbound Marketing Budget and how they differentiated themselves from a Upselling clients is the critical first step but once you have sold an account, how do you implement the strategy outlined? The presentation will go over the exact proposals PCR used, their unique approach to fulfilling Inbound for clients, and the structure of clients meetings and what they cover. Drew will go over in detail how he completely reorganized his entire staff to become a full Inbound Marketing Agency. You will leave with the personality testing he uses to identify Inbound Marketers, interview process, training and education for employees.

Book Formatting: Quality Control Checks for DesignersConfidence Ago
This presentation was made to help designers who work in publishing houses or format books for printing ensure quality.
Quality control is vital to every industry. This is why every department in a company need create a method they use in ensuring quality. This, perhaps, will not only improve the quality of products and bring errors to the barest minimum, but take it to a near perfect finish.
It is beyond a moot point that a good book will somewhat be judged by its cover, but the content of the book remains king. No matter how beautiful the cover, if the quality of writing or presentation is off, that will be a reason for readers not to come back to the book or recommend it.
So, this presentation points designers to some important things that may be missed by an editor that they could eventually discover and call the attention of the editor.
