Overview of the Lab The increasing interdependence across organizations and
activities creates both opportunities and risks.The Lab
designs solutions that help organizational leadership
address complex technical, scientific, and social
challenges.
Most organizations mobilize their resources with “push
systems”: top-down, centralized, rigid programs with
specified tasks and behavior.
In contrast, increasing interdependence creates the
opportunity for more versatile “pull systems” that focus on
collaboration, agility, platforms and ecosystems to
encourage participation and manage complexity.
The Lab has become a global hub for researchers and
practitioners interested in the reassessing how
organizations manage complexity through an emerging
science of collaboration. The Lab has deployed their
solutions and conducted professional development
workshops in 47 states and 7 foreign countries.
Professionals from over 123 counties have participated in
our online training programs.
The Lab’s tools and insights have been
applied to a wide variety of complex
challenges, from reducing teen homicide
in urban communities to addressing the
challenges of space life sciences in
NASA to helping design strategy
solutions for Fortune 100 companies.

Solution:
Strategic Doing
Traditional, linear approaches to strategy — strategic
planning — are not well suited to adapt to complex
environments.
For the past 12 years, professionals in the Agile Strategy
Lab have been developing, testing and teaching a new
approach to strategy, specifically designed to accelerate
collaboration and innovation. It is rapidly becoming a new
operating system for complex collaborations and
ecosystems.
Organizations deploy Strategic Doing to design and
guide strategy in open networks: across units within the
same organization, among multiple organizations in a
supply chain, or within an open-innovation ecosystem.
Strategic Doing embraces insights from complexity
science. With Strategic Doing, teams learn to form
complex collaborations quickly, move them toward
measurable outcomes, and make adjustments as they
learn. The discipline involves following a set of simple
rules. Although the rules are simple, they are not easy.

Strategic Diversity
With complex challenges we need cognitively diverse
teams.The Lab provides a simple solution to assembling
these teams.
Guiding complex organizations and ecosystems toward
strategic objectives requires cognitive diversity in the
team of people who design and execute the strategic
transformation. Cognitive diversity in the context of
strategic transformation can be thought of as “strategic
diversity.”
The Lab uses an assessment tool called the AEM-Cube
to help people learn where they contribute most to
strategic transformations and gives individuals, teams,
and organizations insights to help them capitalize on their
strategic strengths and anticipate their strategic

Communicating
Complexity
Leadership in complex environments requires a higher
level of communication skills.The Lab provides leaders
with a practical workshop to develop these skills.
CommPlexity helps individuals be more effective as they
communicate the complex challenges they are facing and
their ideas, solutions, and strategies for addressing them.
CommPlexity is designed especially for those who work
in science, technology, social change, and other complex
environments.
In a CommPlexity workshop, participants learn about the
four drivers that move someone to enlist, subscribe, buy,
join, support, or otherwise commit. They also learn how
to create strong narratives so others can see, feel, and
experience what is being communicated. You can learn

Agile Innovation
Innovation in complex environments requires a different
approach.The Lab provides leaders new ways to design
a successful innovation process.
Both markets and technologies are changing rapidly.
Finding new markets for existing technologies and new
technologies for existing markets is often a complex
challenge.
Agile Innovation is the latest solution set from the Purdue
Agile Strategy Lab. Partnering with Germany’s
Fraunhofer Institute, these technology innovation
management tools are now available in the US market.
