Why and how to use data to form compelling storytelling. Hands-on with basic tools of data analysis and visualisation (MS Excel and Tableau Software). A first version of this presentation was instructed on Wednesday, December 14th, 2016, during Panteion University's Communication, Media and Culture ADandPRLab series of workshops on digital skills.

Konrad Adenauer Stiftung Athen organised in mid-July a 4-day seminar for 20 Greek students on the Social Market Economy. On Saturday, July 11th I delivered a presentation on "The Greek contemporary entrepreneurial scene" before joining a few young startuppers and makers to discuss with the participants how to create and run your own venture. On the presentation I'm recording the roots of the greek startup ecosystem, its key players/organisations/VCs/initiatives, the biggest successes and failures the startup ecosystem of Greece, as well as the rise of entrepreneurship and startups in the national media discourse.
The main Media Market Trends & News we would like to share with you in this issue are the following:
Publicis One in Ukraine launches Blue 449 agency
Brief TV Market overview
o Why stopped supplying telemetry data from the occupied Donbass
Digital Market overview featuring recent changes and new Advertising possibilities

Data Scientist: The Sexiest Job in the 21st CenturyLyn Fenex
Presentation from WUSS 2015:
“Data scientist” is often used as a blanket title to describe jobs that are drastically different. There are plenty of articles and discussions on the web about what data science is, what qualities define a data scientist, how to nurture them, and how you should position yourself to be a competitive applicant. There are far fewer resources out there about the steps to take in order to obtain the skills necessary to practice this elusive discipline. This presentation will explore a collection of freely accessible materials and content to jumpstart your understanding of the theory and tools of Data Science. We will also discuss some of the variable understandings that companies use to define the roles of their Data Scientists.

Introduction MA Data, Culture and Society | University of Westminster, UKslejay
Datafication, the transformation of our everyday lives into digital data, poses great risks and opportunities for contemporary societies. This new MA course addresses, explores and researches this transformation. Industries increasingly rely on big data and dataficiation. Students therefore need analytical and practical skills to work with data in various sectors. The interdisciplinary course combines hands-on and applied approaches with theoretical learning. It encourages collaboration, group work and problem-based learning. Students will learn about analytical approaches to big data, algorithms, the Internet of Things, artificial intelligence, blockchain and other cutting-edge technologies. We will discuss and explore what the implications of such technologies for identities, politics, the economy and societies are.
Students will also be introduced to practical skills when it comes to the use, analysis and visualisation of data (such as data/text mining, social network analysis, digital discourse analysis, digital ethnography, sentiment analysis, geospatial analysis). Graduates from this programme will be fully capable and confident to combine these skills during their careers. Students who complete the MA Data, Culture and Society can work in a wide variety of sectors connected to data and the media and creative industries.

State of the News Media 2016
BY Amy Mitchell and Jesse Holcomb
Eight years after the Great
Recession sent the U.S.
newspaper industry into a
tailspin, the pressures facing
America’s newsrooms have
intensified to nothing less than
a reorganization of the
industry itself, one that
impacts the experiences of
even those news consumers
unaware of the tectonic shifts
taking place.
In 2015, the newspaper
sector had perhaps the worst
year since the recession and its
immediate aftermath. Average
weekday newspaper
circulation, print and digital
combined, fell another 7% in
2015, the greatest decline
since 2010. While digital circulation crept up slightly (2% for weekday), it accounts for only 22% of
total circulation. And any digital subscription gains or traffic increases have still not translated
into game-changing revenue solutions. In 2015, total advertising revenue among publicly traded
companies declined nearly 8%, including losses not just in print, but digital as well.
National perspectives on the opportunities and challenges for National Statistical Systems seeking to align with the 2015 agreement - presented at the UN World Data Forum 2017
Learning Analytics and the Student Experience - Higher Education Smart Card A...Martin Hamilton
I presented on Learning Analytics and the Student Experience at the Higher Education Smart Card Association forum on June 3rd 2014. This talk is about how we take a transparent approach to improving the student experience by exploring the "digital exhaust" of data gathered by students' interactions with the IT systems of the modern smart campus. I look at considerations around student access to data (cf. Google Takeout) and the underlying social contract governing what student data is collected and what uses it is put to. I also look at some Jisc innovations such as our work to develop a new business intelligence service with HESA, and potential shared services around learning analytics.
The use of social media for news has started to fall in a number of key markets after years of continuous growth, according to the 2018 Digital News Report. The report, which covers 37 countries in five continents, reveals that usage is down six percentage points in the United States, and is also down in the UK and France.
Almost all of the decline is due to a decrease in the discovery, posting, and sharing of news in Facebook. At the same time, there has been a rise in the use of messaging apps for news as consumers look for more private (and less confrontational) spaces to communicate.
WhatsApp is now used for news by around half of the sample of online users in Malaysia (54%) and Brazil (48%) and by around third in Spain (36%) and Turkey (30%).
The 2018 Digital News Report, which is based on an online survey of 74,000 people, includes findings on trust, misinformation - or so-called ‘fake news’ - television viewing trends, podcasting, adblockers and voice-activated assistants. For the first time the report also includes news literacy, and brand trust.
