This document discusses underachievement in children. It defines underachievement as a significant gap between a child's abilities and their actual achievement in school. Common characteristics of underachievers include being disruptive or quiet in class, having poor attendance and motivation, and low self-esteem. Reasons for underachievement include a lack of interest, a desire for independence, or family issues. Teachers can help by providing challenge and stimulation, establishing goals, and building on small successes. The document also discusses underachievement in gifted students, causes such as pressure to conform or low self-esteem, and suggestions for teachers like creating a supportive environment.
This document provides information about serving advanced and gifted secondary students. It discusses the growth in Advanced Placement (AP) exam participation between 2005 and 2009. It notes that having AP courses on a student's transcript increases their chances of college acceptance. However, AP courses may not always be the best match for gifted students' needs. The document outlines some of the challenges gifted students face and stresses the importance of providing guidance for future planning, support for personal development, and instruction in self-regulation skills for these students.
The document discusses the Student Strengths Inventory (SSI), a non-cognitive assessment designed to help colleges identify at-risk students and develop student success interventions. The SSI measures six non-cognitive factors predictive of student success. It was found to be as effective as a previous assessment, ENGAGE, in identifying students at risk of poor academic performance after one semester. The SSI immediately provides students individualized feedback on their results, including recommendations and campus resources for each factor. Advisors will use SSI results to identify at-risk students and have discussions at advising sessions about improving study skills, course load, time management, and more. A list of campus resources will also be included in advisement materials provided

Helping Students Self-Regulate for Success - CounselorsAngela Housand
This document discusses ways to help students take responsibility for their own learning through developing self-regulated learning behaviors. It defines self-regulated learning as when students are metacognitively, motivationally, and behaviorally active in their learning. Research shows that providing choice, strategy instruction, opportunities for goal-setting and self-evaluation can help students engage in self-regulated behaviors. The document provides examples of strategies like organizing tools, setting specific and meaningful goals, and fostering intrinsic motivation that teachers can use to help students gain control over their learning.
The document discusses the characteristics and challenges of students with learning differences. It outlines that academically, these students plateau in skills and struggle with studying, assignments, and organization. Socially, they have difficulty interacting with peers and following rules. Motivationally, they do not see the value of effort or make and achieve goals. Executively, they struggle with problem-solving and applying knowledge. The document notes the gap between students' skills and the increasing academic, social, and executive demands through school years. It emphasizes matching students to supportive learning environments to help them succeed.
This document discusses classroom management strategies for teachers. It begins by clarifying the purpose of classroom management and establishing provisions for an effective learning environment. Some key points include maintaining desirable classroom discipline, presenting strategies for good management, and addressing common discipline issues like cell phone use, disrespect among students, and student depression. The document also discusses creating a positive learning culture through flexibility, organization, patience, and caring for students. Effective teachers are described as excellent communicators who can address concerns like absenteeism, cheating, bullying and harassment. Classroom design, student numbers, and maintaining a positive attitude are also covered. The goal is to help teachers shape their classrooms to encourage appropriate behavior and student growth.
Assessment for Learning (Chinese language program)Shaz Lawrence
This document discusses assessment for learning versus assessment of learning. Assessment for learning involves students in the learning process, uses clear targets, and provides continuous feedback to improve learning. It focuses on the process of learning rather than ranking students. In contrast, assessment of learning determines students' competence, ranks students, and has no emphasis on improving learning. The document provides examples of how to implement assessment for learning, including involving students in setting goals and criteria, using feedback, self-assessment, and designing authentic tasks. It emphasizes that assessment for learning should not be optional but rather an essential part of instruction.

The document discusses characteristics of both effective and ineffective educators. Effective educators plan well-structured lessons, make themselves available to students, and encourage student-directed learning. Their classrooms are organized with available resources and schedules posted. Ineffective educators rely on fear and punishment, have poor planning and classroom management, are unprofessional or too lax with students, and fail to challenge or engage students. They do not motivate students or respond well to misbehavior.
Classroom management involves establishing procedures, rules, and reducing discipline problems. Effective classroom management includes monitoring student behavior, responding appropriately to issues, and maintaining a positive environment. It is the teacher's responsibility to meet students' basic needs for safety, belonging, and self-esteem through inclusive lessons, feedback, and a comfortable classroom. Cengage Learning Webinar, Time Management Tips for InstructorsCengage Learning
This April 23, 2013 webinar provided practical strategies teachers may use to make the most of the time spent with students in class and time invested in serving students outside of the regular classroom hours. Based on time management tips from business experts as well as over 30 years of instructional experience, this webinar provides a proactive approach to manage time well.
Topics covered included establishing goals and setting priorities; recognizing classroom time wasters and implementing strategies to defeat them; saving time outside of class; and how technology can help instructors save time.
The document discusses how to provide effective feedback to students. It argues that not all feedback is helpful, as some can decrease motivation. It provides five actions teachers can take to improve feedback: 1) emphasize the task, not the student's ability, 2) give specific guidance on improvement, 3) provide regular feedback, 4) focus on the learning process, not results, and 5) only provide feedback while students are still learning. Research showed that students who received comments-only improved more than those who received grades or both comments and grades. The document stresses making feedback actionable and allowing students to apply it.
This document discusses the importance of Year 10 in positioning students for success in their senior years of schooling. It provides data on cohort GPAs and achievement over time. Strategies are suggested for students to improve their learning outcomes, such as creating a study schedule and using spaced practice. The importance of ISMGs for assessment is explained, as well as how students can understand marking criteria by reading these guides. School policies on assessment, late submissions and missed exams are also outlined.

A Strategic Approach: GenAI in EducationPeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.
