- 2. The portfolio is evidence based Documentation of what you describe in the narrative should be contained in the appendix Use this concept to guide what you write in the narrative…if you cannot adequately support your description then maybe it is not significant enough
- 3. Keep focus on what is most important 20 pages is not enough to describe everything you’ve ever done… Highlight your most significant accomplishments (e.g. the three most important conference papers presented) Use the appendix to background/auxiliary information (e.g. a list of all conference papers presented)
- 4. VARIETY in the narrative In the narrative, use variety to keep the reader’s attention & make it visually interesting Use subheadings and bullet points to distinguish information Charts and tables help to present information in a clear format (and may save space) Use examples in Seldin’s book as models
- 5. Know your audienceWork with a mentor Dr. Seldin suggests that the narrative should be written in a way that your grandmother would understand it Remember that the portfolio will be read by academics—but mostly outside of your discipline Don’t use jargon or assume that your audience can “fill in the blanks” Ask others to read it and give feedback
