Read Me First

Welcome everyone! Over the course of the next 16 weeks, you will be introduced to Social
Psychology and how it relates to your life. Social Psychology examines how your thoughts,
feelings, and behaviors are influenced by other people AND how other people are influenced by
your thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. More than any other psychology course, social
psychology deals with the “stuff” of real life. My role is to help facilitate your learning, so if you
ever need anything please let me know.

We will cover 11 chapters (organized into units and modules) and you should plan to devote at
least four hours per week to this class. On Blackboard you will notice a folder entitled
“Chapters.” Each chapter folder has the following: 1) PowerPoint slides; 2) Unit/Module
activities; and 3) Quizzes. While online courses offer great flexibility over traditional face-to-
face classes--they still require dedicated time and effort.

You should follow the instructions below to understand how to navigate through this course.
You should check the course Blackboard site at least twice a week. Each time you enter the
Blackboard site, you should do the following:
   1. Check the Announcement page first.
   2. Check the Syllabus to see due dates for assignments, activities, discussion board
      responses, and quizzes/exams.
   3. Look into the Chapters folder for chapter units and modules. Each unit consists of two
      modules, and within each module are activities. You are expected to read the sections of
      the textbook (and any other readings) that correspond with each unit and respond to a
      discussion question each week.
   4. If after going through the above you still feel a little lost or have questions, please
      refer to the following:
          a. If course related, access the Course-Related Questions forum. You may leave
              questions about the course here. I will check this forum and respond to your
              questions Monday, Wednesday, and Friday afternoons by 3pm.
          b. If you would like to elicit responses from fellow students, please post your
              question in the Student Dialogue forum. This forum is devoted to students and I
              will not respond to messages/questions posted here.
          c. If they are of a personal nature (e.g., performance related, group dynamics,
              personal situations), you may contact me during my online office hours by joining
              the virtual office hours by clicking the Collaboration button. My online office
              hours are ________________, or you may send me a message through
              Blackboard.
                   i. Click on Send Message, then All Instructor Users to send a message.
          d. If you have an extreme emergency, please call my office telephone (336) 750-
              8800 and leave me a message with a contact phone number.
