Introduction and Course Description
I've designed this course to give you a basic understanding of each of the different fields that collectively make up the science of psychology. One field is concerned with how the brain is organized; another with how children mature; still another with why people become anxious or depressed and how to help them. Psychology is concerned with each of these areas, and much more. In psychology we are interested in why people think and feel and act the way that they do. By the end of this course, you should have a good understanding of what psychologists study, and some of their most important research findings.
Because so many different fields are involved, I will divide the course into sections: neuroscience, development, psychological disorders, and so forth. In lecture, I will survey what psychologists know about each field. This information is reinforced and expanded upon in the textbook and in weekly discussion sessions. To evaluate how well you understand the textbook material, in each section I will ask several questions on the lectures and readings. You will have an opportunity to apply the issues to your own lives during weekly recitation sessions. I also have assigned four papers to develop your written expression of psychology. Finally, there will be a cumulative in class final exam given during finals week.
Course Objectives
After taking PSY 102, you should be better able to:
1. Apply critical thinking skills to research designs and practical problems in psychology.
2. Understand basic psychological theories, principles, and concepts in the areas of human development, social interaction, psychopathology, cognitive processes, and the biological bases of behavior.
3. Evaluate hypotheses, research designs, research findings, and theories.
4. Understand how statistical significance is used in research
5. Understand the difference between pseudo-science and science and apply such understanding to media reports about psychology.
6. Apply psychological concepts and principles to understanding social and cultural phenomena.

Learning Objectives: Whatever direction your career takes you, one thing you can be sure
of is that you will be dealing with people—a lot. This module asks: How do people work? Using
cutting-edge research in cognitive and behavioral science, you will learn how humans make
choices. Our core objectives are:
1. To understand the psychological processes guiding human behavior, with particular
emphasis on consumers’ psychology.
2. To apply behavioral science to business decisions, especially marketing decisions, so that
you can translate ideas into practice.
3. To think critically about quantitative evidence about consumers’ behavior.
Assessment: This module is assessed by coursework (30%) and exam (70%). More details
about each of these assessments is provided at the end of the outline.
Coursework (30%). The coursework for this unit will be a consulting report (750–1250 words).
You have a choice of several different options for this assignment, which are linked to different
lectures and therefore to different due dates ranging from 1 Nov to 6 Jan. All options require
some data collection and synthesis of theory and practice. By 25 October, you will commit to
one of these options and due dates. These deadlines are binding, and changes to your project
that would affect your due date need to be supported by a sound argument and approved by me.
I aim to return feedback within 2 weeks of your deadline. If you feel you could use the feedback
to write an improved report, you will have the option to write a second report on a different
topic, and your final coursework mark will be the average of the marks for the two reports.
Exam (70%). The exam will be composed of short answer and multiple-choice questions. Content
will be drawn from lectures, seminars, and required readings.

coursework project. Students in Section A have lectures on Tuesday and seminars on Friday,

In lecture, I will survey what psychologists know about each field. This information is reinforced and expanded upon in the textbook and in weekly discussion sessions. To evaluate how well you understand the textbook material, in each section I will ask several questions on the lectures and readings. You will have an opportunity to apply the issues to your own lives during weekly recitation sessions. I also have assigned four papers to develop your written expression of psychology. Finally, there will be a cumulative in class final exam given during finals week.
Course Objectives
After taking PSY 102, you should be better able to:
1. Apply critical thinking skills to research designs and practical problems in psychology.
2. Understand basic psychological theories, principles, and concepts in the areas of human development, social interaction, psychopathology, cognitive processes, and the biological bases of behavior.
3. Evaluate hypotheses, research designs, research findings, and theories.
4. Understand how statistical significance is used in research
5. Understand the difference between pseudo-science and science and apply such understanding to media reports about psychology.
6. Apply psychological concepts and principles to understanding social and cultural phenomena.
7. Communicate your ideas orally and in writing.
8. Apply psychological concepts to you own life and experiences.
PSY 102 satisfies the Individual and Society general education requirement of the CUNY Pathways Common Core. The course also enhances proficiency in writing, information literacy, and quantitative reasoning. Learning Objectives: Whatever direction your career takes you, one thing you can be sure
of is that you will be dealing with people—a lot. This module asks: How do people work? Using
cutting-edge research in cognitive and behavioral science, you will learn how humans make
choices. Our core objectives are:
1. To understand the psychological processes guiding human behavior, with particular
emphasis on consumers’ psychology.
2. To apply behavioral science to business decisions, especially marketing decisions, so that
you can translate ideas into practice.
3. To think critically about quantitative evidence about consumers’ behavior.
Assessment: This module is assessed by coursework (30%) and exam (70%). More details
about each of these assessments is provided at the end of the outline.
Coursework (30%). The coursework for this unit will be a consulting report (750–1250 words).
You have a choice of several different options for this assignment, which are linked to different
lectures and therefore to different due dates ranging from 1 Nov to 6 Jan. All options require
some data collection and synthesis of theory and practice. By 25 October, you will commit to
one of these options and due dates. These deadlines are binding, and changes to your project
that would affect your due date need to be supported by a sound argument and approved by me.
I aim to return feedback within 2 weeks of your deadline. If you feel you could use the feedback
to write an improved report, you will have the option to write a second report on a different
topic, and your final coursework mark will be the average of the marks for the two reports.
Exam (70%). The exam will be composed of short answer and multiple-choice questions. Content
will be drawn from lectures, seminars, and required readings.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.

- 1. Read Me First Welcome everyone! Over the course of the next 16 weeks, you will be introduced to Social Psychology and how it relates to your life. Social Psychology examines how your thoughts, feelings, and behaviors are influenced by other people AND how other people are influenced by your thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. More than any other psychology course, social psychology deals with the “stuff” of real life. My role is to help facilitate your learning, so if you ever need anything please let me know. We will cover 11 chapters (organized into units and modules) and you should plan to devote at least four hours per week to this class. On Blackboard you will notice a folder entitled “Chapters.” Each chapter folder has the following: 1) PowerPoint slides; 2) Unit/Module activities; and 3) Quizzes. While online courses offer great flexibility over traditional face-to- face classes--they still require dedicated time and effort. You should follow the instructions below to understand how to navigate through this course. You should check the course Blackboard site at least twice a week. Each time you enter the Blackboard site, you should do the following: 1. Check the Announcement page first. 2. Check the Syllabus to see due dates for assignments, activities, discussion board responses, and quizzes/exams. 3. Look into the Chapters folder for chapter units and modules. Each unit consists of two modules, and within each module are activities. You are expected to read the sections of the textbook (and any other readings) that correspond with each unit and respond to a discussion question each week. 4. If after going through the above you still feel a little lost or have questions, please refer to the following: a. If course related, access the Course-Related Questions forum. You may leave questions about the course here. I will check this forum and respond to your questions Monday, Wednesday, and Friday afternoons by 3pm. b. If you would like to elicit responses from fellow students, please post your question in the Student Dialogue forum. This forum is devoted to students and I will not respond to messages/questions posted here. c.
