3. INTRODUCTION
๏ต A monorail is a railway in which the track consists of a single rail.
๏ต The term is also used to describe the beam of the system, or the trains traveling on such
a beam or track.
๏ต The term originates from joining "mono" (one) and "rail" (rail), from 1897, possibly
from German engineer Eugen Langen, who called an elevated railway system with
wagons suspended the Eugen Langen one - railed suspension Tramway.
4. HISTORY:
๏ฑ The first monorail prototype was made in Russia in 1820 by Ivan Elmanov.
๏ฑ The earliest patent was taken out by Henry Palmer in the UK in 1821.
๏ฑ Gyro Monorail ,balanced on a top of a single rail, were tested,but never developed
beyond prototype stage.
๏ฑ One of the first systems put into practical use was that of French engineer Charles
Larigue, who built a line between Ballybunion and Listowelin Ireland, opened in 1888
and closed in 1924 (due to damage from Ireland's Civil War).
๏ฑ Tokyo Monorail, today one of the world's busiest, averages 127,000 passengers per
day and has served over 1.5 billion passengers since 1964.Now-a-days it is majorly

5. TYPES AND TECHNICAL ASPECTS:
๏ต There are a number of competing designs divided into two broad classes, straddle-
beam and suspended monorails.
๏ต Almost all modern monorails are powered by electric motors fed by dual third
rails, contact wires or electrified channels attached to or enclosed in their
guidance beams, but diesel-powered monorail systems also exist.[ Historically
some systems, such as the Lartigue Monorail, used steam locomotives.
6. CONTIโฆ..
๏ต The most common type is the straddle-beam, in which the train straddles
a steel or reinforced concrete beam 2 to 3 feet (0.6 to 0.9 m) wide.
๏ต A rubber-tired carriage contacts the beam on the top and both sides for
traction and to stabilize the vehicle.
7. MUMBAI MONORAIL:

๏ต Mumbai Monorail is a monorail system in the city of Mumbai.
๏ต The project is implemented by the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development
Authority (MMRDA) along with a consortium of Mumbai based conglomerate
Larsen & Toubro ltd and the Malaysian construction firm scomi Engineering.
๏ต It was approved by the Govt.of Maharastra at 18th August 2008 and started at
9th February 2009.
๏ต The line would connect Jacob Circle, Wadala and Mahul via Chembur,
providing a feeder service to the existing Mumbai Suburban Railway.
8. CONTIโฆโฆ.
๏ต The system started commercial operation after partially opening its Phase 1
to the public in 2014. Upon the completion of entire Phase 1 in mid-2017, the
Mumbai Monorail is set to become the fifth-largest monorail system in the
world.
10. FEATURES:
๏ต Six trains currently operate in the first phase of the line. Ten more will be added
in the second phase. Monorail trains are royal pink, apple green, and ice blue in
colour,with black and white stripes .
