2. The Hatchery is an elementary
school covered play area with a
multipurpose room above. The
1,600SM addition immediately
provided recreation space for the
expanding campus. The building
connects on the second level to
existing school corridors that allow
students to enter without having to
don outerwear.
The “Hatchery” Covered
Play Area @ SAS Pudong
In subsequent years, the open
sides of the covered basketball
court was filled in on two sides to
block strong East China Sea
breezes. The result was to create
an outdoor room capable of year-
round use and complemented a
courtyard playground.
The multi-purpose room has a wall
of mirrors covered with mats when
not in use. The room serves as
dance hall, ES gym, and functional
meeting room. At a time when the
school was still young and
expanding, these stacked program
spaces filled an important niche.

3. The Gym and Performance
Theatre combines two unlikely
companion programs into a unique
stacked structure. The 4,000SM
facility has classrooms, a two
court gym, and locker rooms that
are structurally isolated from a
400-seat theatre and classrooms
below.
MS Gym and Performance
Theatre @ SAS Pudong
The construction of the MS Gym
allowed for valuable athletic
teaching space to be provided for
the expanding campus. The
unique stacking of gym over
theatre demanded research of
several approaches to isolate
sound transmission. The team
developed a box-within-box
structure that allows multiple
functions to operate in complete
isolation and without interruption
or scheduling conflicts.

4. The Shanghai American School
Middle School Classrooms provide
administrative offices, labs, a
library, and classrooms for an
expanding enrollment. The three-
story 12,000SM facility strives to
breakdown the large program into
various forms recalling a village of
buildings.
MS Classrooms
SAS Pudong
The MS was the first portion of the
master plan beginning the main
street corridor that would link all
facilities. The three-story glass
corridor emerges in sections over
the four years it took to complete
the campus.
The MS had to be very flexible to
accommodate various grades and
program requirements as the
campus grew. As an example, the
multi-purpose room has served as
computer classroom, ES library,
and blackbox theatre over the four
years of development. Lounges
have transformed into reception
areas and classrooms have
served as MS and HS faculty.

5. The SAS Media Center is the
heart of the campus. It contains a
beautiful double height library, a
library living room, two computer
classrooms, and plenty of wi-fi.
Upper floors have HS laboratories,
music, and arts classrooms. The
dining hall has a foodcourt
approach that is the envy of the
international school community.
Dining and Music Arts
SAS Pudong
The center of the campus contains
all the functions that make a
school great for living and
learning. It is the location that
feeds the minds and stomachs of
students, parents, and staff.
Second level bridges connect the
MS to the LMC and continue on
through to the HS. Circulation
between the grades and center is
at the essence of the design.
The LMC has become the place to
meet with friends and faculty. The
dining is open all day, the library
caters to students and parents, the
music and arts have performances
and galleries, and the 75 seat
lecture hall provide an excellent
place for community and
conferences.

6. The Shanghai American School
Library Media Center contains
12,000SM of services that are a
showpiece for international
schools around the world.
Library Media Center
SAS Pudong
The school requested highly
flexible spaces that could
accommodate multiple classes
and also have the ability to allow
breakout sessions of smaller
student groups. The solution was
to provide folding walls to isolate
corners of the library. In the living
room, semi-enclosed meeting
rooms form blocks within an open
space. Furniture and smaller
meeting rooms then provide space
for individual instruction or wide
open presentation space.
JeffMillerAIA@comcast.net Studio3 Architecture http://home.comcast.net/~jeffmilleraia
7. The High School portion of the
campus was an exception project
that pushed classroom space to
meet fast expanding enrollment.
The project included three floors of
high school classrooms,
administration and admissions,
two high school gyms, a wrestling
room, a weight room, and both
gym and athletic locker rooms.
HS Classes, Gym & Aquatic
SAS Pudong
The buildings are all designed to
fit in the style of the existing
campus. The team worked very
closely with faculty and
administrative personnel in order
to provide the specific
requirements demanded of an
international education and the
International Baccalaureate
degree.
As with all international work,
there is a special concentration on
security. Setbacks are determined
by US State Department
guidelines. The campus fencing
that surrounds the fields and
buildings were part of the overall
project.

8. Shanghai American School has
two campuses - Pudong and Puxi.
The older Puxi campus newest
addition is a ES library and music
arts building to rival the best
secondary schools in the world.
The 4,000SM project doubled the
size of the ES library, reconfigures
the entire two floor classroom
layout, and provided dedicated art
and music classrooms.
Arts / Media Center
SAS Puxi
The project places three houses
attached to the main stacks of the
library. The exterior of each house
mimics traditional Chinese
construction found in the
mountainous regions west of
Shanghai. Each building provides
quite space for discussion, story
time, or lounging. Two computer
classrooms complete the mix.
The arts rooms are provided with
even Northern light best suited for
drawing and painting. A kiln is
housed in faculty offices between
classrooms.
There are band, orchestra and 2
practice rooms for music.
Everything is connected to the
existing building via a 2-story
glass gallery atrium.

9. Philadelphia Biblical University,
located in Langhorne, is a 5,000
student campus on the verge of
growing to 7,000. The University
needed on-campus housing to
replace deteriorating off campus
apartment buildings. The solution
came when an adjacent assisted
living facility came up for sale.
Heritage Hall & MSP
Philadelphia Biblical University
The University completed the
interior renovations in one summer
and was able to fill the residence
hall.
PBU then embarked on a master
planning process to better define
their campus enter and begin
laying out programs for future
growth. The months long process
provided the school with a
dramatic transformation to their
sprawling campus. The core
component of the plan was to
tread lightly on the grounds.
Landscape Architects Lager Rabe
Skafte rendered a plan that links
the campus on a central walkway
and controls storm water run-off.
The campus adds a new chapel, 2
dormitories, a field house, an
artificial field and expansions to
both music and library. The new
central quad will create a stunning
front yard for the chapel.

10. The Wilmington Savings Fund
Society (WSFS) took inventory of
their home of 100-years and
decided it was time to move to a
new Bucinni Pollin project being
constructed nearby. Their historic
bank building with huge N.C.
Weyth mural was slated for
conversion into high-end
apartments.

11. The Pearl of Shanghai is designed
to be the destination stop in
Pudong. The Dragon, curling at
the base of the Pearl Tower, was
conceived as an entertainment
center on steroids! It contains and
outdoor amphitheatre, an indoor
skating rink, a multiplex movie
theatre and a swank casino
cabaret. There is nothing small in
China.

12. The Seoul Foreign School is the
most prestigious private
secondary school in South Korea.
Their outstanding faculty make the
school what it is. The expansion of
the ES classroom and overall
campus dining would solidify this
reputation.
Theatre, Dining, Classroom
Seoul Foreign School
Seoul is a populated city with
mountainous terrain making
development tricky and expensive.
To address this, the ES expansion
builds additional floors on the
existing school and makes special
use program stacking. Though
hard to believe the building has a
theatre, ES and HS dining,
classrooms, library, and roof-top
tennis courts!
The building burrows into the
hillside and uses a box-in-box
structure to isolate the theatre.
The addition allows enrollment to
expand and provides much need
upgrades to core facilities.
It is the first step in a multi-year
master plan.

13. The Atlantic Aviation
Headquarters at PHL include an
8,300 square foot executive
terminal building for corporate,
pilot, and visitor use. The terminal
is designed to serve as a resource
center and home base for out-of-
town business executives and
corporate pilots.
Atlantic Aviation @ PHL
Housed within it are two
conference rooms; five workspace
phone carrels with data port
connection; a spacious lounge for
informal meetings; a visitor office;
a pilot lounge, snooze room, and
flight plan room; and all the
administrative and training space
required by Atlantic. The interior
is filled with daylight by using
special glass to reduce noise from
the apron. Additionally, two
22,000 square foot hangars with
attached tenant spaces house up
to 16 individual corporate offices.
All storage and limited
maintenance for up to 25 planes
per hangar takes place here.
Located farther east on the apron
is a fuel storage and dispensing
area to accommodate private
fueling needs. A 6,500 square foot
ground equipment maintenance
building includes two additional
tenant spaces.
