Every leader has their own unique style of leading the subordinates. Leadership and its
effectiveness greatly depend on the style adopted by the leader and how effective it is to
reach their subordinates or to communicate with the subject (Lincoln, 2021). According to
academicians and researchers, leadership styles have been broadly classified into 5 distinct
styles of leadership. The first type of leadership is authoritarian leadership, followed by
participative leadership, delegation leadership, transactional leadership, and finally the
transformation of leadership. Most of the leadership styles followed by different leaders
throughout history could be broadly classified under one of each category (Al Khajeh,
2018). According to the characteristics and the type of leadership followed by Abraham
Lincoln could be easily categorized under the transformation leadership style.
Transformation leadership could be defined as the leadership approach that can create a
change in individuals, social systems, organizations as well as the entire country.
Leadership is responsible for creating a valuable change among the followers which often
results in creating new leaders for the future (Cho et al 2019). If this definition is evaluated
2. against the works and leadership styles of Abraham Lincoln it could be seen that he was the
one to drive the social change regarding the slaves and their treatments in America. Lincoln
is often referred to as the change champion through is monumental changes brought in
America like the abolishment of slavery as well as preserving the union at the same time.
Apart from that Abraham Lincoln was also known to have very good communication skills
which ensured that he was able to communicate all his ideas and goals to his people
effectively. He not only focusses on driving change in the lives of it the citizens of America
but also ensure that he nurtured new leaders among the citizens which is one of the key
criteria of being a transformation leader (Goodwin 2019). One of the added advantages of
him being an effective leader versus the ability to convince and motivate others he used to
make where are complex concepts very simple and communicated then with an
understanding of the concerns of the citizen. He was also a very good public speaker which
helped him to thrive even during the most unstable periods of America. Apart from that
Lincoln was also driven by the greatest leadership threats which is the sense of integrity
and strong belief in his principles. Lincoln has exhibited a high amount of emotional
intelligence which ensured that he could empathize with the conditions of his reasons as
well as with the others. This trait of him help to ensure that he was quite convincing and
motivating to his fellow-subjects. Moreover, he was extremely self-aware and was well
aware of all his strengths and weakness ensuring he implemented proper strategies to
improve them as well.
From the above-mentioned facts and details, it was very clear that his communication
ability, as well as his high emotional intelligence, had helped Lincoln to become one of the
greatest leaders in history. He was not only a leader who would lead America to the greatest
success but also was one of the leaders who could clearly emphasize with his subordinates.
