Components of an Argument:
An argument is made up of two or more propositions, one of which is claimed to be supported by the
other.
A proposition, in logic, is a statement that expresses a complete thought. Propositions can be true or
false, and the same proposition can be stated in different ways.
example:
“Torturing children is wrong” is the same content as “It is wrong to torture children”
There are two types of propositions:
conclusions—a proposition that is affirmed or denied on the basis of the other propositions.
premise—a proposition that provides reasons or support for the conclusion.
An argument can have more than one premise.
Once a conclusion is established with premises, it is sometimes then used as a premise to establish
the soundness of another conclusion.
The process by which we move from the premise(s) to the conclusion(s) is known as inference:
Inference: Draws a conclusion on the basis of certain evidence. Inference is only justified if the
evidence is related to the conclusion in the right way. Logic is what identifies how evidence and
conclusions must be related in order for us to claim that the evidence supports the conclusion.
Therefore, you find that the foundation of the argument are the premises.
In a good argument, the premises must be strong enough to support the conclusion and withstand
challenges.
Ethical arguments may contain different types of propositions as premises:
descriptive statements—tell us what is.
prescriptive statements—tell us what ought to be; that is, they deal with values. Normative
judgments and moral principles are prescriptive statements.
definitions—sometimes premises are merely definitions of key terms that may otherwise be
ambiguous, due to having different possible meanings.
analogies—a comparison based upon similarities between two things or events . In logic, analogies
are used to support the conclusion that because things are similar in some important respects,
they are also similar in other respects.
Rhetoric vs. Logical Argumentation:
We distinguish logical argument from what is called rhetoric.
Rhetoric is a means of defending a particular worldview or opinion, rather than analyzing it.
In logical arguments we end with the conclusion; whereas with rhetoric begins with a “pseudo-
conclusion” or opinion.
A rhetorician is distinguished by their using only those statements that support their particular
position, disregarding any statements or facts that do not.
The purpose of rhetoric is to win your opponents over to your view through the power of
persuasive speech, whereas we say that the purpose of a logical argument is to discover the
truth.
Analyzing Arguments:
We analyze arguments, first, by breaking down the argument into premises and conclusion.

1 Basic Assignment Description
For your ethical competency writing assignment, you will write analyze a disagreement between two authors/viewpoints
that we discussed this semester. I am calling the assignment a critical disagreement analysis. Below I will
provide a number of examples of disagreements between the authors we discuss this semester. Your
paper will have the following components
1. Hone the disagreement
• I want you to start by taking my general statement of disagreement and providing your own clear specifics
that focus on particular claims or passages. Here you are taking my starting point, but providing your
own framing of the disagreement that will provide focus for your paper.
• You will hone your statement of the disagreement in a way that sets things up for the next parts of the
paper.
• For example:
– In number 2 below, you will identify a specific critique of Rawls from either Kittay or Noddings.
You need to explain where the disagreement is and set the stage for a fruitful dialogue to follow in
the paper.
• This part of the paper should be focused. You should discuss the two views in a way that sets the stage
for your objection and response.
• In the opening part of the paper you need to preview what is ahead - you may only write this part late
in the writing process, but you need to provide a clear preview of where the rest of the paper goes.
2. Provide the best objection from one point of view to another
• I want you to do more than just state the two sides of the issue in this paper. I want you to bring the
authors into dialogue. You will do this by articulating an objection to one position from the point of
view of the other, then responding to the objection.
– You want your objection to be more than just restating a point where the authors diagree. Here’s
what I mean by just restating, as an example:

Kant believes that there are absolute rules that should be followed without regard to conse-
quences. The strongest utilitarian objection to this is that Kant disregards the importance
of how an action affects overall happiness.
– The above is an example of what not to do. That way of stating things won’t get you far because
it is just a re-stating of a key difference between Kant and utilitarianism.
• You should look for an objection that raises a new question for the other point of view, or points out
an unforeseen implication of the view. In some way it should move discussion forward. I am not
asking you to discover something that has never been said about these issues. I just want
you to deepen your understanding of the two views by raising a serious objection to one
position, then responding to it.
– In some way the objection should force you to think in new ways about the position objected to.
• In this section you should explain as clearly as you can how the objection presents a proble.

INSTRUCTIONS: This assignment consists of a short essay question, and some short logic questions.
The main intent of these questions is to ensure that you have a sound grasp of the fundamentals of the
material presented in this unit. The logic questions are intended to draw on some important logical
concepts that will be relevant throughout the course. Although an understanding of basic logic
terminology and argumentation is important in this course, logic for its own sake is not the focus of this
course. As such, the short essay question should attract most of your attention with this assignment.
There is a 3 to 4 page (1000 words) limit for the short essay question. I’m not so concerned with whether
you agree with a particular author or not. The quality of your answer is based on your exposition of the
competing positions, your comparative analysis of those positions and, lastly, your argument in support of

As with all the assignments in this course, the short essay question is not designed to be a “research”
question. There is no requirement to get material from external sources such as websites like Wikipedia.
In fact, doing so can count against you. The point of your essay is to formulate the course material and
develop your critical response. You can do this by working with the course material and developing your

Possible Topics:
1) At the beginning of Plato's Meno, Meno offers Socrates several definitions of virtue
or
arete. None of the definitions satisfy Socrates. Reviewing the definitions and
Socrates' responses to them, what seems to be the major fault of each in Socrates'
eyes? Do you think Socrates is raising legitimate objections to the definitions? Why
or why not? Discuss as critically and creatively as possible.
2) In his attempt to refute Meno's definition of virtue as "the desire of things honorable
and the power of attaining them," Socrates argues that "no one desires that which is
evil." Explain the definition and Socrates' refutation of it in detail. What is Socrates'
argument exactly, and how does it serve to show that Meno's definition is inadequate?
Do you think Socrates' argument is legitimate? Why or why not? Discuss as
critically and creatively as possible.
3) After attempting to define "virtue" unsuccessfully, Meno finally gives up and admits
that he does not know what virtue is. Socrates then invites Meno to join a mutual
inquiry regarding the nature of virtue. At this suggestion, Meno introduces a paradox
which, if legitimate, would make inquiry into the nature of virtue impossible. What is
the paradox, and how does Socrates respond to it? What do you think of Socrates'
response? How, in other words, do you read the nature and the significance of

4) After arguing that all learning is recollection, Socrates lets Meno talk him into an

Components of an Argument:
An argument is made up of two or more propositions, one of which is claimed to be supported by the
other.
A proposition, in logic, is a statement that expresses a complete thought. Propositions can be true or
false, and the same proposition can be stated in different ways.
example:
“Torturing children is wrong” is the same content as “It is wrong to torture children”
There are two types of propositions:
conclusions—a proposition that is affirmed or denied on the basis of the other propositions.
premise—a proposition that provides reasons or support for the conclusion.
An argument can have more than one premise.
Once a conclusion is established with premises, it is sometimes then used as a premise to establish
the soundness of another conclusion.
The process by which we move from the premise(s) to the conclusion(s) is known as inference:
Inference: Draws a conclusion on the basis of certain evidence. Inference is only justified if the
evidence is related to the conclusion in the right way. Logic is what identifies how evidence and
conclusions must be related in order for us to claim that the evidence supports the conclusion.
Therefore, you find that the foundation of the argument are the premises.
In a good argument, the premises must be strong enough to support the conclusion and withstand
challenges.
Ethical arguments may contain different types of propositions as premises:
descriptive statements—tell us what is.
prescriptive statements—tell us what ought to be; that is, they deal with values. Normative
judgments and moral principles are prescriptive statements.
definitions—sometimes premises are merely definitions of key terms that may otherwise be
ambiguous, due to having different possible meanings.
analogies—a comparison based upon similarities between two things or events . In logic, analogies
are used to support the conclusion that because things are similar in some important respects,
they are also similar in other respects.
Rhetoric vs. Logical Argumentation:
We distinguish logical argument from what is called rhetoric.
Rhetoric is a means of defending a particular worldview or opinion, rather than analyzing it.
In logical arguments we end with the conclusion; whereas with rhetoric begins with a “pseudo-
conclusion” or opinion.
A rhetorician is distinguished by their using only those statements that support their particular
position, disregarding any statements or facts that do not.
The purpose of rhetoric is to win your opponents over to your view through the power of
persuasive speech, whereas we say that the purpose of a logical argument is to discover the
truth.

For your ethical competency writing assignment, you will write analyze a disagreement between two authors/viewpoints
that we discussed this semester. I am calling the assignment a critical disagreement analysis. Below I will
provide a number of examples of disagreements between the authors we discuss this semester. Your
paper will have the following components
1. Hone the disagreement
• I want you to start by taking my general statement of disagreement and providing your own clear specifics
that focus on particular claims or passages. Here you are taking my starting point, but providing your
own framing of the disagreement that will provide focus for your paper.
• You will hone your statement of the disagreement in a way that sets things up for the next parts of the
paper.
• For example:
– In number 2 below, you will identify a specific critique of Rawls from either Kittay or Noddings.
You need to explain where the disagreement is and set the stage for a fruitful dialogue to follow in
the paper.
• This part of the paper should be focused. You should discuss the two views in a way that sets the stage
for your objection and response.
• In the opening part of the paper you need to preview what is ahead - you may only write this part late
in the writing process, but you need to provide a clear preview of where the rest of the paper goes.
2. Provide the best objection from one point of view to another
• I want you to do more than just state the two sides of the issue in this paper. I want you to bring the
authors into dialogue. You will do this by articulating an objection to one position from the point of
view of the other, then responding to the objection.
– You want your objection to be more than just restating a point where the authors diagree. Here’s
what I mean by just restating, as an example:

Kant believes that there are absolute rules that should be followed without regard to conse-
quences. The strongest utilitarian objection to this is that Kant disregards the importance
of how an action affects overall happiness.
– The above is an example of what not to do. That way of stating things won’t get you far because
it is just a re-stating of a key difference between Kant and utilitarianism.
• You should look for an objection that raises a new question for the other point of view, or points out
an unforeseen implication of the view. In some way it should move discussion forward. I am not
asking you to discover something that has never been said about these issues. I just want
you to deepen your understanding of the two views by raising a serious objection to one
position, then responding to it.
– In some way the objection should force you to think in new ways about the position objected to.
• In this section you should explain as clearly as you can how the objection presents a proble.

1) At the beginning of Plato's Meno, Meno offers Socrates several definitions of virtue

Socrates' responses to them, what seems to be the major fault of each in Socrates'

2) In his attempt to refute Meno's definition of virtue as "the desire of things honorable
and the power of attaining them," Socrates argues that "no one desires that which is

Obviously the threat to human life is
the top concern for everyone at this
moment. But businesses are also starting
to suffer as productivity slips globally
and the workforce itself is squeezed.
The UK Government’s March budget
did announce some measures, especially
for small and medium-size enterprises
(SMEs), that will make this period
slightly less painful for organisations.
However, as is apparent from the tank-
ing stock market (the FTSE 100 has
hit levels not seen since June 2012) the
economy and pretty much all businesses
in the country (unless you produce hand
sanitiser) are going to suffer. There is no
time like now for the UK to embrace
its mantra of ‘keep calm and carry on’
because that is what we must do if we’re
going to keep business flowing.
For the IT department at large there is
lots of urgent work to do to ensure that
the business is prepared to keep running
smoothly even if people are having to
work remotely. The task at hand for cyber
security professionals is arguably even
larger as Covid-19 is seeing cyber criminals
capitalising on the fact that the insider
threat is worse than ever, with more people
working remotely from personal devices
than many IT and cyber security teams
have likely ever prepared for.
This article will argue that the cyber
security workforce, which is already suf-
fering a digital skills crisis, may also be
lacking the adequate soft skills required
to effectively tackle the insider threat
that has been exacerbated by the pan-
demic. It will first examine the insider
threat, and why this has become so
much more insidious because of Covid-
19. It will then look into the essential
soft skills required to tackle this threat,
before examining how organisations can
effectively implement an apprentice-
ship strategy that generates professionals
with both hard and soft skills, includ-
ing advice from the CISO of globally
respected law firm Pinsent Masons, who
will provide insight into how he is mak-
ing his strategy work. It will conclude
that many of these issues could be solved
if the industry didn’t rely so heavily on
recruiting graduates and rather looked
towards hiring apprentices.

PROCEDURE ACT

ABSTRACT
Despite dramatic changes in the modern regulatory state over the last seven decades,
Westlaw reports that Congress has only amended the Administrative Procedure Act sixteen
times since its enactment in 1946. The current political climate may present an ideal op-
portunity for much-needed bipartisan legislative action. This Essay introduces the Ameri-
can Bar Association’s 2016 consensus-driven recommendations to reform the Administra-
tive Procedure Act and then concludes that the Portman–Heitkamp Regulatory
Accountability Act of 2017, which incorporates seven of the ABA’s nine recommenda-
tions, is the type of common-sense, bipartisan legislation needed to modernize the APA.

Dear Dr. Kornbluth and Mr. Gorenberg,
The US House of Representatives is deeply concerned by ongoing and pervasive acts of antisemitic
harassment and intimidation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Failing to act decisively to ensure a safe learning environment for all students would be a grave dereliction of your responsibilities as President of MIT and Chair of the MIT Corporation.
This Congress will not stand idly by and allow an environment hostile to Jewish students to persist. The House believes that your institution is in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and the inability or
unwillingness to rectify this violation through action requires accountability.
Postsecondary education is a unique opportunity for students to learn and have their ideas and beliefs challenged. However, universities receiving hundreds of millions of federal funds annually have denied
students that opportunity and have been hijacked to become venues for the promotion of terrorism, antisemitic harassment and intimidation, unlawful encampments, and in some cases, assaults and riots.
The House of Representatives will not countenance the use of federal funds to indoctrinate students into hateful, antisemitic, anti-American supporters of terrorism. Investigations into campus antisemitism by the Committee on Education and the Workforce and the Committee on Ways and Means have been expanded into a Congress-wide probe across all relevant jurisdictions to address this national crisis. The undersigned Committees will conduct oversight into the use of federal funds at MIT and its learning environment under authorities granted to each Committee.
• The Committee on Education and the Workforce has been investigating your institution since December 7, 2023. The Committee has broad jurisdiction over postsecondary education, including its compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, campus safety concerns over disruptions to the learning environment, and the awarding of federal student aid under the Higher Education Act.
• The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is investigating the sources of funding and other support flowing to groups espousing pro-Hamas propaganda and engaged in antisemitic harassment and intimidation of students. The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is the principal oversight committee of the US House of Representatives and has broad authority to investigate “any matter” at “any time” under House Rule X.
• The Committee on Ways and Means has been investigating several universities since November 15, 2023, when the Committee held a hearing entitled From Ivory Towers to Dark Corners: Investigating the Nexus Between Antisemitism, Tax-Exempt Universities, and Terror Financing. The Committee followed the hearing with letters to those institutions on January 10, 202

A Strategic Approach: GenAI in Education
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.
