3. Read the following articles
about famous inventors.
Wilbur Wright (1867 – 1912) Orville Wright
The American brothers Wilbur and Orville Wright came Dayton, Ohio –
they had a bicycle shop there, they wanted to fly , and studied al the
flying books , First they made kites . Then they started to make “gliders”
(aeroplane with no engines). Glider number 3 worked. It flew 1,000
flights. Then they made the world’s first working aeroplane with an
engine. It was called “Flyer Number 1”. In 1903, flyer number 1 flew 260
metres at Kitty Hawk, north California. They changed their bicycle shop
into an aeroplane factory, and sold aeroplanes to United States
government. Wilbur of fever in 1912, and Orville retired. He was a
millionaire then, and spent the rest of his life in aeroplane research.
4. Leonardo da Vinci
(1452 – 1519)
The Italian, Leonardo da Vinci is famous because of
his paintings. But he wasn’t only a painter, he was also
an architect and an engineer. He drew the world’s first
helicopter 500 years ago (but he didn’t make it), and
thought of many other ideas which became real in the
future. His most famous painting was the Mona Lisa.
As a scientist, he worked in geology, botany,
hydraulics and mechanics. He wrote his notebook in
mirror writing (back to front). He was one of the great
minds of all time.
