Improvements in hinges for cardboard or like boxes
Description of GB780199 (A)
COMPLETE SPECIFICATION.
Improvements in Hinges ior Cardboard or like Boxes.
We,,E. S. Pe A. ROSINSON LIMITED, a Company organised under the laws
of Great
Britain and Northern Ireland, of l Relcliffe
Street, Bristol 1, do hereby declare the inInvention for which we pray
that a patent may be granted to us, and the method by which it is to
be performed, to be particularly described in and by the following
statement:
This invention relates to hinges for cardboard or like boxes of the
kind with attached lids or display panels, the hinge being provided
between the box body forming one part and lid or panel forming another
part.
The object of the invention is to provide a hinge which will prevent
the lid or panel from falling right back when opened, and will avoid
the necessity of providing tapes for this purpose.
According to this invention a hinge for a box of the kind described
comprises a strip of paper or the like rigidly secured to one part and
slidable with respect to the other part, the arrangement being such
that the friction between the strip and the part with respect to which
it is slidable is sufficient to hold the two parts in a desirable
angular relationship when opened. Preferably the strip forming the
hinge is rigidly secured to the lid and slidable with respect to the
box.
The hinge replaces the usual inside hinge and is in addition to the
usual outside hinge.
The invention is illustrated in the draw- ings filed with the
Provisional Specification wherein:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of one form of box made according to this
invention;
Fig. 2 is a section taken on line 2-2 of
Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of a modified
form of the invention;
Fig. 4 is a section on line W4 of Fig 3:
Fig. 5 is a perspective view of a further modification,
Fig. 6 is a section taken on line 6-6 of
Fig. 5;
Fig. 7 is a perspective view of a further modification; and
Fig. 8 is a sectional side elevation.
Referring to Figs. 1 and 2, a rectangular cardboard box 1 is provided
with an upstanding liner 2 to form a shoulder 3 to receive the edge 4
of the lid 5. A strip 6 forms a flexible hinge and is secured by
adhesive 7 to the rear wall of the lid 5. The free portion of the
strip 6 is sandwiched between the box 1 and the liner 2 and passes
under a lining 8 provided on the bottom of the box 1. In use, when the
lid 5 is opened, the strip 6 slides only slightly in relation to the
box 1, there being sufficient frictional resistance to keep the lid 5
from falling right back.
Instead of the liner 2, a platform of the same or less height may be
substituted. In some cases the strip need not extend along the bottom
of the box.
In the form shown in Figs. 3 and 4 the hinge strip 6 is secured to the
inside surface of the top of the lid 5, but not to the rear wall of
the box 1 and is continued as a loose fit over the bottom of the box.
In the form of the box shown in Figs. 5 and 6 an internal fitting
serves to control the unfixed end of the hinge strip 6. The strip 6 is
secured by adhesive 7 to the inner surface of the top of the lid 5.
The free end of the strip 6 extends down the rear wall of the box 1
and terminates at a point within a fraction of an inch from the bottom
of the box. This free portion is maintained in position by an internal
fitting 9 provided for the purpose of forming partitions in the box.
Normally a box of this kind would be provided with tapes to keep the
lid from falling back too far when opened.
Referring to Figs. 7 and 8 the box comprises a base 10 having
upstanding walls 11 set in from the edge. The strip 6 is secured by
adhesive 7 to the rear wall of the lid 5.
The free end of the strip 6 is held between and free to move within
limits of the base 10 and a false bottom 12.
The invention is particularly suitable for boxes intended to display
the contained articles for sale, because the flexible hinge allows the
salesman to adjust the lid to a limited extent in relation to the box
to suit his requirements.
What we claim is : -
1. Hinge for a box of the kind described comprising a strip of paper
or the like secured to one part and slidable with respect to the other
part, the arrangement being such that friction between the strip and
the part with respect to which it is slidable is sufficient to hold
the two parts in a desired angular relationship when opened out.
2. Box of the kind described having an inside hinge comprising a strip
of paper or like material secured to the lid or panel and slidable
with respect to the box body, means being provided for restricting the
said sliding movement so that the friction between the strip and the
part of the body with which it is slidable is sufficient to hold the
box and lid or panel in any desired angular relationship.
3. Box according to Claim 2 wherein the box is provided with a lining,
platform or internal fitting adapted to bear on the unfixed part of
the strip to cause the required frictional resistance between the said
strip and the said unfixed part.
4. Box substantially as described with reference to Figs. 1 and 2; or
Figs. 3 and 4: or Figs. 5 and 6: or Figs. 7 and 8 of the drawings
filed with the Provisional
Specification.
