Abraham Lincoln was born in 1809 in Kentucky. He was nicknamed "Abe" by friends in school and enjoyed reading. He later moved with his family to Indiana and then Illinois. Lincoln married Mary Todd and they had four sons together, though only one lived to adulthood. Lincoln was elected as the 16th US President in 1860 as the first Republican president. During his presidency, he delivered the Gettysburg Address and freed all slaves through the Emancipation Proclamation. Lincoln was assassinated by John Wilkes Booth at Ford's Theater in 1865.
