 Probability
Answer the following. You MUST SHOW process.
1. In a box you have the following candies: 2 gums, 3 lollipops, and 5 chocolates. What’s the
probability of taking a lollipop out of that box?
a) 20%               b) 30%             c) 40%             d) 50%
         2 gums
       + 3 lollipops                          3/10 = 0.3 * 100 = 30%
         5 chocolates
        10 candies

2. The probability of going out during vacations is 5/10, meanwhile the probability of staying
home to work is 2/6. What’s the probability of going out and NOT working?
a) 1/6             b) 1/ 3           c) 5/6            d) 7/ 6
       2 events: Going out AND Staying home (either working or resting – NOT working)

      Going out = 5/10 = ½
      Staying Home =        WORKING= 2/6 = 1/3                NOT working = 2/3
            Going out * NOT working = ½ * 2/3 = 2/6 = 1/3

 Solving Linear Systems
3. Determine whether (1,2) is a solution to the following equation:
        2x – 5y = -8
         -x + 2y = 3  YES, IT’S A SOLUTION
2(1) – 5(2) = -8                -(1) + 2(2) = 3
2-10 = -8                       -1+4 = 3
-8 = -8                         3=3

Solve the following system of equations:
4. By GRAPHING method.
       4x – y = 1
       x+y=4
                                                                                  (1,3)
-y = 1 - 4x        y= 4 - x
y= -1 + 4x         m: -1/1
m: 4/1             b: 4
b: -1

Check: 4(1) – (3) = 1          (1) + (3) = 4
       4-3=1                           4=4
          1=1
5. By SUBSTITUTION method.
       x – 2y = 4
      -2x + y = 3                  (-10/3 , -11/3)

x = 4 + 2y                         x = 4 + 2y             Check: (-10/3) – 2(-11/3) = 4
-2(4 + 2y) + y = 3                 = 4 + 2 (-11/3)             -10/3 + 22/3 = 4
-8 – 4y + y = 3                    = 4 – 22/3                  12/3 = 4
-8 – 3y = 3                        = 12/3 – 22/3               4=4
-3y = 3 + 8                        x = -10/3                   -2(-10/3) + (-11/3) = 3
-3y = 11                                                       20/3 - 11/3 = 3
y = - 11/3                                                     9/3 = 3
                                                               3=3

6. By ELIMINATION or linear COMBINATION method.
       -2x + 3y = 15
       -6x + 6y = 18          (6, 9)

       (-2x + 3y = 15) -3 = 6x – 9y = -45                 -2x + 3y = 15
       -6x + 6y = 18        -6x + 6y = 18                 -2x + 3(9) = 15
                             0 – 3y = -27                 -2x = 15 -27
                                 y = -27/-3               -2x = -12
                                 y=9                      x = -12/-2 = 6

       Check:        -2(6) + 3(9) = 15                    -6(6) + 6(9) = 18
                     -12+27 = 15                          -36 + 54 = 18
                     15 = 15                              18 = 18
