2. Rice in East Java
• As East Java has the largest paddy area and largest production in 2016, the rice productivity in East Java still lower than
Bali and West provinces. The area of Bali province is much smaller than East Java.
• East Java is self-sufficient in rice production and therefore is able to export rice to other provinces.
• Rice productivity depends on a:
• sufficient supply of water, either through rainfall, an efficient irrigation system or a combination of both
• the quality of the paddy seed
• the farmer’s access to government fertilizer subsidies
• a balanced fertilizer
• better extension activities as efforts towards plant protection, integrated weed management and addressing the
incidence of pest and disease through adopting integrated pest management

3. Innovation for Rice
To increase the productivity of rice in East Java, there are
several criteria to be considered:
1. Sprinkler-irrigated rice system
• The sprinkler irrigation stands out among the
alternatives studied to save water in rice production
due to its flexibility, high productivity potential, and
ease of adoption.
2. GPS (Global Positioning Systems) and Precision Farming
• Uses satellite networks to precisely match crop needs
with crop requirements.
• Being used for farm planning, field mapping, soil
sampling, tractor guidance, crop scouting, variable
rate applications, and yield mapping.

4. Palm Oil in Riau
Based on the statistics by Badan Pusat
Statistika 2020, Riau is the province with
largest production of palm oil in Indonesia
among the others province.
• The crude palm oil production system is vital to
the economy of Indonesia and has many
domestic and foreign uses. It provides a major
export source through food and for industrial
use. It is also used for domestic food, biodiesel,
and biofuel.
• The plantation of Palm Oil Tree follows their
specific season and period. The whole process
from planting to harvesting takes up to 4 years,
and the lifespan of the tree can be up to 25
years. Palm Oil Tree requires warm weather with
high humidity environment to grow up healthily
as too much rainfall could flood the plantations
and hamper the harvesting and dry spell would
affect the plants’ growth thus lowering the
production.

5. Palm Oil
• Palm oil represents the largest plantation
area by species in Riau (over 3 million
hectares), covering around one-third of the
province’s total land area.
• Based on the bar graph above, it can be
seen that palm oil has a great impact on the
trees in Indonesia's forests through burning
the forest. It is because forest burning is the
easiest and cheapest way to clear land
to start plantations.

Innovation
• To have a sustainable palm oil plantations, there
are several innovation to increase the productivity
of palm oil. This includes:
1. Enhanced the harvesting evacuation of fresh
fruit bunches
2. Loose fruit collection
3. Fertilizer and pesticide applications
• Small holder which is farmer with less 50 hectares
of oil palm plantation need to have Roundtable on
Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO) certification. It helps
them in:
1. Yield improvement
2. International market
3. Raising income
4. Reduce risk of land conversion
