We, PHILIPS ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES LIMITED, Spencer House, South Place,
Finsbury, Lohdon, E C 2, a British Company, do hereby declare tie
invention, for which we pray that a patent may be granted to us, and
the method by which it is to be performed, to be particularly
described in and by the following statement:-
The invention relates to iieans for attaching two parts to one another
in a detachable manner It is an object of the invention to provide a
cheap and practical attaching means which is particularly suitable for
attaching a radio receiver to the instrument panel of an automobile.
According to the invention the means comprises a strap made from
strip-material shaped into the form of a vertically arranged U having
very short limbs which are secured to one of the parts to be joined to
one another, two slits being formed so as to be parallel to one
another in the horizontal portion of the strap adjacent the limbs,
each of which slits comprises a narrow middle portion and two widened
end portions of unequal width and co-operates with a pin, screw or the
like, secured vertically on the other part which is required to be
attached, each pin, screw or the like comprising a head which fits
within the widest portion of the slit, a shank which fits within the

narrowest portion and a shoulder provided at the underside of the head
which fits within the remainder of the slit and is situated therein in
the normal position of the parts when attached to each other, whilst
the middle part of the horizontal portion of the strap resiliently
engages the part required to be attached on which the pins, screws or
the like are provided and locks the pins, screws or the like against
displacement in the slits.
It should be noted that the system of slits and pins, screws or the
like used is known per se, for example, for securing curtains.
The invention will now be described more fully with reference to the
accompanying drawlPrice 3 s 6 d l ing, in which: 45 Figures 1 -and 2
are a fiont-view and a sideview respectively of one embodinient used
to secure an autotn 6 bile radio receiver, and Figures 3 and 4 show
details of this embodiment o 50 Figures 1 and 2 show-the attachment of
the front side of an automobile radio receiver 1 to a horizontal
supporting: flange of a wall 3, in the present case a flange of -the
instrument panel 5 of an automobile The supporting 55 member comprises
a strap 7 made of stripmaterial, for example, steel strip, shaped into
the form of a vertical U having very short limbs which are secured to
the supporting wall 3, for example by means of screws 60 Adjacent the
limbs of the U two parallel slits are provided at right angles to the
direction of length of the horizontal portion of the U-shaped strap 7,
one of which is shown in Figure 3 The slit comprises a narrow middle
65 portion 9 and two widened preferably circular end portions 11 and
13 of unequal diameter.
Each slit co-operates with a pin, screw or the like (Figure 4) secured
vertically in the receiver case and having a head 15 which fits with a
70 small amount of clearance in the portion 13 of the slit, a shank 17
which fits in the narrowest portion 9 and a shoulder 19 which is
provided underneath the head 15 and fits into the portion 11 75 When
the receiver 1 is to be secured to the strap 7, the head 15 of each
pin, screw or the like is inserted from below into the portion 13 of
the associated slit through a distance such that the shoulder 19 is
situated above the level 80 of the base of the U-shaped strap 7 When
the receiver 1 is moved to the front, the shank 17 passing through the
narrow portion 9 of the slit, and subsequently is lowered, the heads
15 will bear upon the strap 7 at the point of the 85 slit portions 11
the diameter of which is smaller than that of the heads The shoulders
19 of the pins, screws, or the like are arranged in the slit portions
11; they cannot be removed therefrom by mere shifting without previous
raising, since the diameter of the shoulders 19 exceeds the width of
the slit portion 9.
Thus, unintentional raising of the receiver and the pins, screws or
the like, for example, due to shocks when the automobile is running,

is prevented, since the centre part of the horizontal middle portion
of the strap 7 (the base of the U) resiliently engages the receiver 1
and presses it down The middle portion of the strap 7 may for this
purpose be slightly bent (Figure 1) or may engage a projection (not
shown) provided on the top of the case of the receiver 1.
The receiver 1 is readily detachable by raising it against the
pressure of the strap 7, moving it back and lowering it.
On the rear side of the receiver 1 a second securing means of the kind
described may be provided However, a simple hooked brace 21 which
supports the receiver will be sufficient since the attachment at the
front prevents any displacement If required, however, the receiver can
be secured to the brace 21 with a few readily accessible screws 23.

Dispensing Various Products such as, for Example, Fuels.

pray that a patent may be granted to us, and the method by which it is
to be performed, to be particularly described in and by the following
statement: -
The present invention relates to apparatus for measuring, checking or
dispensing various products, such as, for example, apparatus for
dispensing fuels, energy and the like, and automatic weighing machines
or the like, which apparatus are already provided with devices adapted
to check the quantities measured or I 5 delivered and/or adapted to
compute the respective price of the measured or delivered product.
It is a particular object of the invention to provide an additional
machine which is applicable to the apparatus specified above, said
machine being adapted to print and issue a cash register ticket and
being moreover combined with a safety device permitting the use of
said machine and/or the drawing of the products from said apparatus
exclusively to authorised persons, even if in considerable number.
According to this invention there is provided for application to
apparatus for measuring, checking or distributing- various products'
such as, for example, fuels, a machine for printing and issuing cash
register tickets or slips in combination with a safety device, such
'machine being provided with devices for recording the capacity and/or
the respective price of the product measured, checked or delivered,
and comprising numbering printing members connected kinematically with
the automatic computing or counting device of the apparatus, a safety
device actuating means adapted to unlock the apparatus and to permit
the use of the machine and means adapted to cause the printing and
issuing of the ticket, the clearing of the numbering printing members
and the locking lPrice 3 s 6 d l of the apparatus-and of the machine
at the end 45 of the operation.
The niumbering printing members are preferably arranged along one
single axis and their control and clearing carried out concentrically
'50 Connection with the 'computing device existing in the' apparatus
takes place, for example, by means of toothed gearing Of the set -of
numbering members which compose a figure, e g to indicate the quantity
of product 55 measured or'delivered or to indicate the respective
price, the existing computing-device controls only the first member,
which in turn controls by means of planetary gears in a manner known
per se the other members 60 belonging to the same figure, those
members being irreversible.

The safety device is constituted preferably by a lock that can be
operated by means of distinctive keys by a certain number of
authorised 65 persons The means co-operating with and controlled by
said lock ensure that the operation of the whole delivering,
measuring, etc apparatus for the products is only possible when there
has been previously introduced 70 said key which then remains locked
in the machine for the complete cycle of operation and is not
recoverable except at the end thereof.
The means which cause the printing and the 75 issuing of the cash
register ticket, the clearing of the numbering printing members and
the locking of the apparatus with the contemporaneous release of said
key may be operable by hand, e g by means of a crank 80 handle, or by
any servomechanism and they are formed essentially of a toothed
gearing with cams and levers.
In addition to the printing and issuing of a ticket in the machine
according to the inven 85 tion there can also be printed a statistical
or checking sheet or tape and moreover it is possible also to stamp
interesting -data on cards, papers; etc Such data may be, for
instance, the distinctive symbol of the person that has carried out
the operation (number or sign corresponding to a specific key), the
quantity of product delivered or checked, the amount in currency of
the quantity delivered or checked, the progressive number of the
operation, the distinctive number of the machine; moreover there may
be recorded the date at which the operation was carried out, the trade
mark of the product andlor of the firm, as well as advertising or
indicative scripts To form the distinctive number of the person that
has carried out the operation, the safety lock and every key may be
provided with mechanisms adapted to act during the opera-tion of
unlocking the machine, upon stamping members ciphered with distinctive
symbols or numerals which permit all of the combinations corresponding
to those of each key.
Numbering sectors form -and print the progressive number of each
operation while special external knobs connected to numbered printing
sectors permit the daily forming of the date.
For the printing of the brand or trade-mark, and of the advertising or
indicative scripts, there are provided printing members equipped with
special printing blocks or plates.
The machine is then completed with all members needed for printing,
for advancing the paper tape for the ticket or slip, for advancing and
reeling the paper tape for the checking sheet, for advancing, reeling
and automatic reversing of the copying ribbon and for cutting the
ticket or slip from the respective paper tape.
Moreover, there may be provided devices for locking the apparatus in
case of exhaustion of the supply of paper for the ticket and of paper

for the control sheet.
To make the invention more fully clear, there will be described
hereinafter merely by way of example and without limitation one
embodiment of the machine as applied to a common fuel dispenser (e g a
gasoline or petrol pump) In the following description, reference will
be made to the accompanying drawings in which: FIGURE 1 shows
diagrammatically the gasoline or petrol pump to which the machine
according to the invention is applied; FIGURE 2 illustrates the
connection between the subject machine and the automatic computer of
the dispenser pump; FIGURE 3 is another diagrammatical view of the
connecting gearings of Figure 2; FIGURES 4 and 5 show diagrammatically
the means for locking and unlocking the pump; FIGURE 6 is a
diagrammatical side view of the mechanism for printing the ticket and
the control sheet; FIGURE 7 shows in plan view the assembly of the
computing device and of the safety lock > 65 of the machine; FIGURE 8
is a longitudinal section on the line VIII-VIII of Figure 7; FIGURE 9
shows a detail of Figure 8 partly in elevation and partly in section;
FIGURES 10 to 14 are respectively cross 70 sections on the lines X-X,
XI-XI, XII-XII, XIII-XIII, and XIV-XIV of Figure 7 illustrating
details of the computing device and of the lock; FIGURES 15 and 15 a
are two views -of a 75 key adapted to be employed with the machine;
FIGURES 16 and 17 are two views, one in section and the other in plan,
of a modified form of safety device; and FIGURES 18 and 19 are
respectively a 80 longitudinal section and a cross-section of a second
modification of safety device.
Referring to Figure 1, it will be seen that the machine according to
this invention is applied, in the case chosen as an example, to a
conven 85 tional gasoline or petrol pump (fuel dispenser) 1, which is
provided with a delivery tube or gun 2 having an actuating button 3
and hooked to a supporting fork 4 A breaker 5 (Figure 5) which is
actuated on the lifting of the fork 4 90 when the gun 2 is removed
therefrom, starts the motor and the delivery pump proper (which are
not shown in the drawing) and the fuel is delivered on pressing the
button 3 Moreover, the dispenser is provided with both an auto 95
matic computer 6 of the quantity of fuel delivered and an automatic
computer 7 of the amount in currency belonging to, said quantity.
Those computers 6 and 7 are of known kind, being readable from the
exterior of the pump, 100 and are operated by means of the rotation of
the first gear and a known planetary system, the two computers being
cleared by making two revolutions of a crank-handle 8.
The machine according to this invention is 105 contained in a casing 9
so that it can be easily applied, e g to a gasoline or petrol pump as
hereinbefore stated All the parts composing the machine are supported
between two side panels 10 and 11 of the casing 9 110 Rigidly fixed to

the wall 10 of the casing 9 are three columns 12, 13 and 14 carrying
two plates 16 and 17 spaced from each other and from a front plate 15
fixed to, the columns 12, 13 and 14 by means of bolts 12 a, 13 a and
14 a 115 having threaded nuts thereon, the framing so formed serving
to support the numbering printing members, together with respective
accessory members, and also to support the safety lock 120 The
numbering printing members are constituted by two coaxially arranged
sets of numbering discs 18 and 19 (see Figures 7 and 8), of which the
one set of discs 18 serves to stamp the figure indicating the quantity
of fuel 125 delivered, whilst the other set of discs 19 serves to
stamp the figure indicating the respective amount in currency On the
same axis of the discs 18 and 19 there are also provided other
numbered discs 20 for composing and 130 785,776 1 spective serrated
wheels 32, 34.
The clearing device for the numbered discs 18, 19 is connected to that
clearing device controlled by the crank-handle 8 and provided in the
dispenser 1 70 To the end of the shaft 49 (Figure 2) carrying the
crank-handle 8 there is fixed a pinion which meshes with a -toothed
wheel 51 on a shaft on which there are also fixed toothed wheels 52
having semi-circular toothing 75 which meshes with toothed wheels 53,
54 fitted respectively to the ends of the shafts 28 and 30 projecting
from the wall 10 Shafts 28 and 30, which are coaxial with-the shafts
27 and 29, are arranged -respectively around-the shaft 27 80.
and around-the shaft 29 and each have an intermediate -flange 55 and
56 The discs 18 are mounted in a freely rotatable manner around the
terminal portion of the shaft 30 and between its flange 55 and the
serrated wheel 34, 85 whilst the discs 19 are arranged around the
terminal portion;of the shaft 28 between its flange 56 and the
serrated wheel 32 The shafts 28 and 30 have in their terminal portions
external longitudinal grooves 57, 58 re 90 spectively in -which the
pawls 59 pivoted on each of said discs can engage for the purpose of
clearing the discs 18 and 19 The pawls 59 are kept in contact with
pipes 28 and 30 by flat springs 60 (see Figure 11), and the flanges 95
and 56 of the shafts 28 and 30 are each provided with a peripheral
notch 61 (Figure-10).
Two frames, 62, 63 support' the planet wheels 47 and each has a
wedge-shaped projection 64 adapted to engage in the respective 100
notch 61 of the flanges 55 and 56 A spring 65 for each frame 62 and 63
acts in a sense to keep the wedge-shaped projections 64 engaged in the
respective notches 61 ini which position the planet wheels 47 also
mesh -with the discs 105 18 and 19 respectively The planet wheels 47
when disengaged from the respective discs 18 and 19-are held in
meshing position by means of elastic plates 66, whilst other elastic
plates 67 brake the discs 18 and 19 110 The shaft 30 carries, in the

proximity of its flange 55, a toothed wheel 68 which meshes with a
toothed wheel 69 fitted on a shaft 70 supported rotatably in the
frames 62 and 63.
At the other end of the shaft 70 (see Figures 7 115 and 13) there is
fixed a toothed wheel 71 which actuates the disc 20 ' adapted to
control by means of planet wheels 72 the numbered discs 20 forming the
progressive number A complete rotation of the shaft 30 determines 120
the advancement of the progressive number by one unit.
As clearly shown in Figure 8, the discs 20 are arranged to be freely
rotatable about the hollow body 33 rigid with the supporting plate 125
17 and are aligned with the discs 18 and 19.
Between the numbered discs 20 and the front plate 15 there are further
provided two discs 21 which too are aligned with the discs 18 and 19 '
130 stamping the progressive number of the operations, and, finally,
discs 21 provided with numerals and signs for composing and stamping
the distinctive sign of the person who has carried out the dispensing
operation.
In addition, a printing block or plate 22 carrying the distinctive
number of the machine is fixed in a suitable position on the plate 16.
In staggered relationship with respect to the axis of the discs 18,
19, 20 and 21, there are provided printing sectors 23 connected to
appropriate knobs 24 externally of the plate 15 ' for the composing
and printing of the date.
Moreover, on the frame formed on' the columns 12, 13 and 14 there are
fixed printing members provided with special printing blocks or plates
25 for printing fixed and advertisement inscriptions (see Figure 4).
The numbering printing members constituted by the discs 18 and 19 are
arranged respectively between the wall 10 and the plate 16 (the set of
discs 18) and between the plates 16 and 17 (the set of discs 19).
The wall 10 has internally a supporting flange 26 with a through hole
wherein there are supported rotatable with respect to one another four
concentric shafts 27, 28, 29 and 30, of which the internal shafts 27
and 28 pass through a hole 31 in the plate 16, and extend towards the
supporting plate 17, whilst the shafts 29 and 30 end in the proximity
of the plate 16 To one end of the internal pipe 27 there is' rigidly
fixed a serrated wheel 32 having peripheral and front toothing, the
front portion of the wheel 32 being guided and supported in a bore of
the body 33 rigid with the plate 17 The intermediate shaft '29 is
terminated before the plate 16 and also has fixed thereon a serrated
wheel 34 having exclusively peripheral toothing At their opposite and
outer ends the shafts 27 and 29 are terminated with toothed wheels 35
and 36 fitted to the respective shafts outside the wall-10 of the
-casing 9.
4 S As shown clearly in Figure 2, the toothed wheels 35 and' 36 are in

direct engagement with unit ratio with the toothed wheels 37 and 38
respectively fitted on the concentric shafts 39 and 40 To the opposed
ends of these shafts 39 and 40 are rigidly fixed the toothed wheels 41
and 42 respectively meshing with the toothed wheels 43 and 44 of the
automatic computers 6 and 7 provided in the dispenser 1.
Through this gearing connection the movements of the computers 6 and 7
are transmitted the serrated wheels 32 and 34 (Figure 8) which, by
means of pawls 45 and 46 'respectively pivoted to the first discs of
the two sets of numbered discs 18 and 19 (see Figure 12), transmit the
movements to those first discs of the printing computing groups
The'transmission to the other discs of said groups is effected in a
manner known per se by means of planetary gears 47 (Figure 11) Elastic
tongues ' 48 keep the pawls 45,46 engaged with the re785,776 3 Those
discs 21 'form part of the safety lock and serve to print the
distinctive number corresponding to the key used as will hereinafter
be described.
The safety lock comprises a guide member 73 for a key 74 and fixed
externally to the front plate 15, this guide member 73 having a slot
75 in communication with an analogous slot in the plate 15
corresponding to the external profile of the key -The terminal portion
of the key 74 is cylindrical and hollow and has an external
longitudinal groove 77 which opens into-another circular groove 78.
The key is provided at its end with two diametrically opposed vanes 79
and 80 which have their inner ends projecting into the bore of the
key, the vane 79 being provided with a step 81 determining a certain
distance in respect to the centre of the key and different for each
individual key The discs 21 have internally a stepped profile 82 with
which the step 81 of the vane 79 co-operates during the rotation of
the key A peg 76 provided in the slot 75 of the member 73 slides,
during the introduction and rotation of the key, in-the grooves 77 and
78 respectively and as a consequence thereof the key has to be
completely introduced before it be possible to rotate it Further, the
extraction of the key is possible only in one determined angular
position thereof.
Inside the body 33 which is rigid with the supporting plate 17 there
is provided a small cylinder 83 having a helical slot 84 in its
peri'phery, this slot 84 engaging a peg 85 rigid with the body 33 in
such a way that the small cylinder 83 in rotating about its axis also
performs a longitudinal displacement The small cylinder 83 carries an
axial extension 86 provided with special grooves wherein there can
engage the internal ends of the vanes 79 and of the key 74 (Figure 8)
In the direction opposite to the extension 86, the small cylinder 83
is rigid with a rod 87 slidable in the shaft 27 and having its end 88
projecting from the other side of this shaft.

Inside the body 33 there is also provided a shaped plate 89 which has
at one end a wedgeshaped formation co-operating with the front
toothing of the wheel 32 (see Figures 8 and 9) and at its other end
projects into the internal hollow of discs 21 into which the vanes 79
and of the key 74 pass when the latter is introduced into the lock and
is rotated.
An upper projecting portion of the plate 89 is adapted to co-operate
with a cylindrical cam having an inclined plane 90, rigid internally
with the disc 20 ' The plate 89 is in an inclined plane with respect
to the plane of introduction of the vanes 79 and 80 of the key (see
Figure 13) to render it inaccessible from outside The end 88 of the
rod 87 serves as a means for locking the members controlling the
delivery of fuel and co-operates with a crank lever 91 (Figures 4 and
5) pivoted at 92 on the wall of the dispenser One arm of the lever 91
is connected with both the control lever of the breaker 5 and the
supporting fork 4 This latter connection is effected by means of a
gauged spring 93 which prevents the forced 70 actuation of the breaker
5 when the lever 91 is locked, that is, when the end 88 of the rod 87
is engaged in a special bore 94 of the lever 91.
The lever 91 is provided with a tail 95 for covering the aperture
through which the rod 75 87 is retracted in the shaft 27, while it is
so retracted, and the lever 91 is displaced angularly about
its'fulcrum 92.
The machine according to the invention is further provided with
mechanisms for printing 80 the ticket or slip and a control sheet.
Figure 6 shows a roll 96 from which paper tape 97 for the cash
register tickets to be printed unreels The paper tape 97 passes under
the printing members and is guided by 85 special rolls and above said
printing members passes a second paper tape 98 unreeling from a roll
99 and reeling up on a roll 100.
This second paper tape 98 serves as a record for the operations
carried out and remains in 90 the machine Since the same data are
printed on both tapes 97 and 98, the printing members carry equal
digits in diametrically opposed positions It will be understood that
on the record tape 98 there are printed only the data 95 which
interest for the purpose of checking, while the other data such as for
instance the date, advertising texts and the like, are printed
exclusively on the lower paper tape 97 A copying ribbon 101 passes
both upside and 100 downside between the printing members and the
respective paper tapes.
The stamping of the two paper tapes 97 and 98 is determined by hammers
105, 106 and 107 arranged at the ends of levers which receive a 105
percussion movement from a lever 108 in such a way as to bring said
beaters under pressure against the printing members numbered, viz.

provided with signs or words The paper tape 97 passes through a shear
109 which is 110 actuated by a connecting rod 110 connected to a lever
111.
The members which control the beaters for stamping, which advance the
paper tapes and the copying ribbon and which actuate the 115 shear,
are the following:
The pinion 50 fixed on the shaft 49 of the crank-handle 8 (see Figure
2) meshes not only with the toothed wheel 51 but also with a toothed
wheel 112 fitted on a shaft 113 which 120 carries inside the casing 9
a toothed wheel 114.
This wheel 114 meshes with the three toothed wheels 115, 116 and 117
(Figure 6) To the shaft of the wheel 115 there is fixed a cam 118 with
which the end of the lever 108, which 125 controls the hammers 105,
106 and 107, is kept in contact by means of a spring 119 Moreover the
wheel 115 has a guide groove 120 in which there is guided a pin 121
rigid with the end of a lever 104 which carries members 102 130

the following manner The rotation of the crank-handle 75 determines
the rotation of the toothed wheels 52 and 114 During a first period
the toothed wheels 52 do not mesh with the wheels 53, 54, the toothing
of the wheels 52 being extended only over half their circumference The
wheel 80 114 causes rotation of the wheels 115, 116 and 117 and the
cam 118 immediately releases the lever 108 (Figure 6 illustrates the
position at the beginning of the movement) which under the action of
the spring 119 determines a move 85 ment of percussion of the beaters
105, 106 and 107 and, thereby, the contemporaneous stamping of all of
the appropriate data, at one side on the paper tape 97 and on the
other side on the paper tape 98 After stamping, the lever 124 90 goes
down owing to the rotation of the guide groove 122, and causes the
toothed wheel 125 to mesh with the toothed wheel 127 which is already
in movement In that way, the two rolls 126 and 128 drag forward the
tape 97 by 95 an amount determining the length of the ticket or slip
The lever 124 is then automatically raised again and the tape 97 stops
again, ready for a subsequent stamping operation 100 Contemporaneously
with this operation, the lever 104 also lowers by the effect of the
rotation of the guide groove 120 and the members 102 and 103 advance
the copying ribbon 101 and the paper tape 98 by the neces 1615 sary
amount Consequently, the toothing of the wheel 52 meshes with the
wheels 53 and 54 and determines a rotation of the shafts 28 and

(Figure 8) The wedge-shaped projections 64 of the frames 62 and 63
leave the respec 110 tive notches 61 of the flanges 55 and 56 (Figure
10) in such a manner as to disengage the planet wheels 47 from the
discs 18 and 19 and the small elastic plates 67 brake all the discs 18
and 19 115 The longitudinal grooves 57, 58 of the shafts 28 and 30
meet in their rotation progressively the pawls 59 of the discs 18 and
19, taking these to zero position (see Figure 11).
At the same time, the toothed wheel 68 120 rigid with the shaft 30
rotates the shaft 70 and actuates, by means of the wheel 71 the disc
20 ' of the computer of the progressive number, thereby determining an
advancement by one unit or increment The disc 20 ' with its cam 125
having an inclined plane 90, acts upon the upper portion of the small
plate 89 and makes it indent with its wedge-shaped end in a spaceof
the front toothing of the wheel 32 In this way the key 74 is again
free and recoverable, 130 and 103 adapted to cause the advancement by
the necessary amount of the copying ribbon 101 and of the paper tape
98 respectively.
The wheel 114 also has a guide groove 122 for a pin 123 rigid with the
end of a lever 124 which at its other end carries a freely rotatable
toothed wheel, 125 and a roll 126 When the lever 124 is lowered, the
wheel 125 can mesh with a wheel 127 actuated by the wheel 116 which in
turn meshes with the wheel 114 On the axis of the wheel 127 there is
fixed a circumferentially grooved roll 128 which, together with the
roll 126, causes advancement of the paper tape 97 passing between said
two rolls Further, the wheel 117 has a guide groove 129 for a pin 130
rigid with the lever 111 for controlling the shear 109.
Operation of the machine described above is as follows:
At the beginning of each fuel delivery operation, it is necessary to
unlock the dispenser and the machine by introducing into the safety
lock a special key 74 When the key is introduced completely, the
internal ends of its vanes 79 and 80 are engaged in the grooves of the
extension 86 of the small cylinder 83.
On turning the key clockwise through 180 , the small cylinder 83 is
rotated and, at the same time, displaced longitudinally in the
direction of the arrow in Figure 8 By this displacement, the rod 87
which is rigid with the small cylinder 83 is retracted into the shaft
27 and the lever 91 is released.
At the same time, the vane 79 of the key determines a rotation by a
certain angle of the discs 21 The angle of rotation of said discs
depends on the point at which the step 81 of the vane 79 meets the
stepped profile 82 of said discs and said angle varies in accordance
with different keys In this way distinctive symbols corresponding to
the particular key with which the operation is carried out are
prepared for subsequent stamping.

On lifting of the delivery tube 2, the fork 4 acts, by means of the
traction exerted by a spring 131, upon the gauged spring 93, which in
turn exerts a pressure upon the lever 91 unlocked in such a way as to
actuate the breaker which starts the motor and the delivery pump
Delivery begins when the button 3 on the pipe 2 is depressed; and with
the delivery of the fuel the counting devices 6 and 7 of the dispenser
are automatically actuated These in turn actuate through the
connection described, the numbering printing discs 18 and 19 of the
machine of the invention.
With the rotation of the wheel 32, the wedge-shaped end of the shaped
plate 89, which was previously housed inl a space of the front
toothing of the wheel 32, is pushed out of this space in such a way
that the plate 89 is displaced so that its other end projects into the
interior of the discs 21 and creates a hindrance for the lower vane 80
of the key which is turned upwards In this way the key 785,776 viz
extractable During this clearing operation, the shafts 27 and 29 are
at rest and the pawls 45, 46 friction along the toothing of the
respective serrated wheels 32 and 34 At the same time, the guide
groove 129 (Figure 6) lowers in its rotation the lever 111, thereby
actuating the shear 109 in such a way as to detach the printed ticket
from the tape 97.
At this time the operation is finished and the operator can carry out
a new operation or lock the machine and the delivery device, and
recover his key In this latter case he turns the key by 180 in a
counter-clockwise direction causing in this way a displacement of the
small cylinder 83 and of the rod 87 in a sense contrary to that of the
arrow in Figure 8 The end 88 of the rod 87 leaves the shaft 27 and
enters the bore 94 of the lever 91 and locks the delivery device.
Figures 16 and 17 illustrate one of the possible variants of the
safety device in the case in which a printing key is used and Figures
18 and 19 illustrate a second variant of the safety device in the case
in which a non-interpretable key is used.
The safety device illustrated in Figures 16 and 17 is constituted
essentially by a drum lock operating with the well-known system of
pegs distinguished in two series.
A first series 211, 212 and 213 is housed in the holes of a member 210
rigid with a small shoulder 218, each peg having a predetermined
length, whilst a second series of pegs 214, 215and 216 is housed in
holes in a core 217, each peg being biased outwardly by springs.
The key has a fork 201 at the ends of which are fixed bosses 202 and
203 which carry one or more symbols or marks distinguishing each key
engraved in relief Inside the fork 201 is fixed a small plate 204, the
profile of which permits the unlocking of the core 217 of the lock.
The central portion of the key includes a longitudinal hole in which a

pin that connects the thumb piece 206 with the bolt 207 is
accommodated.
The locking of the lock is obtained by means of the pegs 214, 215 and
216, which, by being pushed towards the outside by the springs,
project over the diameter of shim adjustment of the core 217 and enter
into the holes of the member 210, thereby preventing the core 217 from
rotating.
The locking of the apparatus is synchronised with the locking of the
lock by means of a connection between a square cross-sectioned hole
219 in the core 217 and the square crosssectioned extension of the rod
87.
The unlocking of the lock is obtained by introducing the key 201
completely into the groove 208 (Figure 17), of the member 210 and,
while the bosses 202 and 203 are in printing position, the plate 204
which is provided with projections and recesses of determined
dimensions permits the pegs 211, 212 and 213 to lower the pegs 214,
215 and 216 down to the diameter of shim adjustment of the core 217
The unlocking of the apparatus is carried out by means of a clockwise
rotation through 1800 of a thumb-piece 206 which, 70, being rigid with
the bolt 207, drags along with it in rotation the core 217, the rod
connected with the latter performing in rotating a longitudinal
displacement, due to the action of the groove 84, and entering again
into the shaft 27 75 The beginning of delivery determines the movement
of the wheel having front teeth (X) of the group of discs (Y) and the
plate 89 projects over the plane of contact of the core 217 and
accommodates itself in the space obtained 80 in the members 210 and
217 and a dowel 224 rigid with the core 217, which now is turned
upwards owing to the unlocking operation just described, prevents the
return rotation of said core 217 as well as of the thumb-piece 206 of
85 the key However, the pegs 211, 212 and 213, which are inserted
between the grooves of the plate 204 and the surface of shim
adjustment of the core 217, prevent the key from being recovered 90
With the clearing of the computing members, the inclined plane of the
first disc 20 ' retracts the plate 89 enabling the rotation in the
contrary sense of the core 217 which, in returning to the starting
position, determines the un 95 locking of the key thereby rendering it
recoverable.
According to the variant illustrated in Figures 18 and 19, the safety
device is again constituted by a peg-operated drum type lock, 100 but
in this case the key is not interpretable, that is to say, it does not
carry its own mark engraved on it; but it is provided with
supplemental teeth adapted to pre-set the discs of the marks inside
the lock in the print 105 ing position corresponding thereto.
The key is formed by a disc-shaped handgrip 301 from which extends the

plate 302 having a shaped section which in its lower profile presents
two non-distinct series of pro 110 jections and recesses The first
series determines the composition of the distinctive symbols for each
key, whilst the second series determines the unlocking of the lock
(constituted by the well-known peg-system) 115 The clockwise rotation
of the key through determines the unlocking of the apparatus and the
composition of the distinctive symbols of every key The composition of
the distinctive symbols is determined by the 120 dimensions of the
projections and recesses of the first series If the key is introduced,
members 303, 304 and 305 assume the positions determined by said
dimensions and project from the core 306 by a determined amount On 125
the rotation of the key through 1800, the portions of the members 303,
304 and 305 which project from the core 306 meet progressively the
corresponding steps of discs 307, 308 and 309 carrying these along for
the remaining 130 785,776 lock the apparatus and to permit the use of
the machine and means adapted to cause the printing and issuing of the
ticket, the clearing of the numbering printing members and the locking
of the apparatus and of the machine at 70 the end of the operation.
2 A machine according to claim 1, characterised in that the numbering
printing members are constituted by discs arranged along a single
axis, such discs being controlled by 75 means of a toothed gearing in
parallel with the computing or counting devices existing in the
apparatus to which the machine is to be applied.
3 A machine according to claim 1 or 2, 80 characterised in that two
series of discs are provided, one series for the indication and
stamping of the quantity and another 'series for the indication and
stamping of the respective price of the measured or delivered
-product, a first 85 disc, which by means of a system of planetary
wheels controls the other discs belonging to the same series, being
directly controlled by means of a serrated wheel and pawl.
4 A machine according to any of claims 1 90 to 3, characterised in
that the clearing of said numbering printing members is carried out
contemporaneously with the clearing of the computing or counting
devices of the apparatus, transmitting means being provided 95 for
transmitting the movement from said computing or counting devices to
shafts arranged concentrically with respect to the printing members,
such shafts being provided with longitudinal grooves which co-operate
with 100 pawls on the discs to drag the latter along to their zero
position.
A machine according to claim 4, characterised in that the shafts are
provided with flanges each having a notch co-operating 105 with a
wedge-shaped projection of a frame, in which there are supported
planetary wheels, in such a manner as to cause the disengagement of
the planetary-wheels from the discs during the stage of clearing 110 6

A machine according to any of claims 1 to 5, characterised in that the
safety device is constituted by a lock actuable by means of a series
of keys and in that different means are provided to act, during the
operation of un 115 locking the machine, upon printing members
provided with symbols or distinctive numerals for the combination of a
distinctive sign corresponding to the particular key used for the
operation, means also being provided for lock 120 ing and unlocking
the measuring and delivering or dispensing apparatus.
7 A machine according to claim 6, characterised in that each key is
provided with two vanes one of which is provided with a stop, the 125
height of which is different for different keys, co-operating with an
internal stepped profile of at least one disc which externally carries
distinctive signs or numbers for each utilizable key 130 stroke and
taking them with the corresponding symbols to the printing position
Members 310 cause the setting of the discs 307, 308 and 309 during the
whole time of the operation (Figure 4).
The unlocking of the lock is determined by the second series of
projections and recesses which, when the key has been introduced, act
upon pegs 311, 312 and 313 to push pegs 314, 315 and 316 to the point
of shim adjustment of the core 396 with the member 317, thereby
releasing the core 306 The unlocking of the apparatus is determined by
transmitting the rotation of the lock through 180 to the rod 87 which
performs a longitudinal displacement and returns into the shaft 27.
An extension 319 of the key, when introduced into a groove 320 in the
rod 87, establishes the connection between the lock -20 and the
locking of the apparatus 'The beginning of the delivery determines the
rotation of the wheel having front teeth (X) of the group (Y) and the
plate 89 accommodates itself in a groove symmetrical with, and
diametrically opposite to, the groove 322 of the core 306 preventing
the rotation in the contrary sense of the core 306, whilst the pegs
311, 312 and 313, which are inserted between the second series of
recesses and projections of the key and the surface of shim adjustment
of the member 317, prevent extraction of the key, thus rendering it
non-recoverable.
When clearing the computing members, the plate 89 is retracted, by
virtue of the inclined plane of the disc 20 ', with respect to the
groove 322 and the core remains unlocked On rotating the key in the
contrary sense, the members 324, 325 and 326 return the discs 307, 308
and 309 to the starting position; the extension -40 319 returns the
rod 87 to the locking position; and finally the pegs 311, 312 and 313,
by returning to correspond with the holes in the member 317, permit
recovery of the key.
Obviously the mechanical means of the -45 machine hereinbefore
described may undergo various modifications and may be replaced with

analogous means without departing from the scope of the present
invention.
Finally, and if desired, additional means :50 may be provided for
locking the machine in case of the exhaustion of the supply of paper
for the ticket and/or control sheet.

22, Illinois, United States of America, do hereby declare the
invention, for which we pray that 'a patent may be granted to us, and
the method by which it is to be performed to be particularly described
in and by the following statement:This invention relates to a

weather-tight hous Ing and more particularly to a weathertight
enclosure adapted to contain la mechanism such as a, parking meter.
'The present invention provides a weathertight closure comprising a
housing having a recess therein terminating in an upper free edge, a
cap to cover the recess and having a lower free edge, a hinge member
hingedily connected to one side of the cap and secured to the housing
within the recess for limited vertical movement, a lock device
positioned within the recess to engage another side of the cap, Mneans
interconnecting the hinge member and the lock device to cause them to
move together, and manually operable means for moving said connecting
means from 'a first position permitting pivotal movement of the cap
about the hinged connection to, the hinge member to a second position
preventing such movement of the cap and causing engagement of the lock
device to said other side of the cap, locking the cap to the housing
with said edges in weather-tight engagement The present invention also
provides a weather-tight enclosure for a parking meter mechianism,
comprising a housing having a' recess therein adapted to receive the
mechanism and terminating in an upper edge, crank lever means
pivotally mounted within the recess, said crank lever means having an
upwardly extending portion terminating in a hook portion and having a
substantially horizontally extending portion, a cap adapted Jo cover
said recess and having a lower edge adapted to seat upon said edge of
the recess, and 'a rotatlPrice able lock member mounted on the housing
'and having a cam portion positioned in the recess to contact the
crank lever means to pivot the same to cause the hook portion
lockingly to engage the cap.
It is the general object of the invention to produce a new and
improved enclosure of the type described.
It is a more specific object of the invention to produce a
weather-tight enclosure for 'a parking meter mechanism which is so
'constructed 'and arranged as to providt 'a readily openable
weather-tight enclosure for the mechanism which is capable of being
locked in closed position and in which the moving parts effecting such
locking and opening are all completely enclosed.
It is a further object of the invention to produce an enclosure or
housing for a parking meter which is proof against tampering and
vandalism.
It is another object of the invention to provide a parking meter
housing adapted to contain a parking meter mechanism wherein the
mechanism is moved into its correct position in' the housing 'and held
in such position' by the housing without the use of screws or other
anchoring devices.
It is yet another object of the invention to provide an enclosure for
a parking meter including 'a housing having a recess terminating in a

stepped upper edge and a cap having a lower edge complementary in,
shape to the edge.

the cap may be swung to open position to expose the recess and then in

meter housing embodying the invention; Fig 2 is a side elevational
view of the apparatus of Fig 1 showing the cap in open 'and closed
positions; Fig 3 is a top plan view showing the housing of Figs 1 and
2 and the position of the parking meter mechanism therein; Fig 4 is a
view similar to Fig 3 but showing the parking meter mechanism removed;
Fig 5 is a vertical sectional view along line 5-5 of Fig 4; Fig '6 is
a sectional view along line 6-6 of Fig 5; and Fig 7 is 'a view like
Fig 6 but showing the cap in closed position and engaged by the
locking mechanism.
While this invention is susceptible of embodiments in many different
forms, there is shown in the drawings and will herein be described in
detail one specific embodiment, with the understanding that the
present disclosure is to be considered as an exemplification of the
principles of the invention and is not intended to limit the invention
to the embodiment illustrated The scope of the invention will be
pointed out in the appended claims.
Referring now to the drawings there is shown a parklng meter 10 having
a housing divided into an upper portion 11 and a lower portion 12
Means are provided for supporting the housing on a post 13 standing
along the curb in the usual manner The upper housing 11 ' houses the
parking meter mechanism generally indicated at 14 which includes a
coin receiving portion 15 protruding forwardly of the meter mechanism
with such portion being provided with ia coin receiving slot 1,6 and a
manually actuable handle 17 for operating the meter and setting the
dials, etc.
H Iingedly mounted on the upper housing portion 11 ' is a ca p 18 in
the form of a half moon, or semi disk which is provided with a pair of
transparent windows 19 on either side of the centre portion of the cap
through which the dial and violation flags of the meter may be viewed.
Referring now to Figs 4 to,7 inclusive, it wilt be noted that the
upper housing portion 11 is provided with an internal recess 20
adapted to receive the parking meter mechanism 14 and the front wall
21 of the housing is provided with a cut-out portion 22 through which
the coin receiving portion 15 may extend when the mechanism is

properly positioned within the recess 20 The upper edge 23 of the
recess 20 is stepped as shown in Figs 6 and 7 and the lower edge 24 of
the cap is stepped in a complementary fashion so that when the cap is
seated upon the housing portion 11, a weather-tight juncture
therebetween is assured.
The cap 1 '8 is hingedly secured to the housing portion 11 and for
this purpose there is provided a hinge member 25 having an upper
portion generally in the form of a yoke including tvo spaced legs 26
and 27 which at their upper ends are bent over a hinge pin 28 which
extends through apertures in lugs 29 affixed to the inside of the cap
18 The 70 hinge member 25 is movable upwardly within the housing
recess 20 so that the complementary stepped portions 23 and 24 of the
housing edge and cap edge respectively may continue even at the
location of the hinge For this 75 purpose the hinge member 25 is
provided with a slot 30 embracing a bushing 31 fixed in a side wall of
the housing portion 11 By virtue of this construction the hinge member
25 may slide upwardly when the cap is pivoted 80 to open position
(illustrated in Fig 6) and downwardly to the position shown in Fig 7
when the cap is closed.
For locking the cap in closed position there is provided a crank arm
means 35 comprising 85 a pair of crank levers 36 and 37 each having a
substantially vertically upwardly extending arm 38 and a generally
horizontally extending arm 39 The crank levers are pivoted at and 41;
respectively to the sides of the recess 90 The upwardly extending arm
38 of each crank lever is provided at its upper end with a hook
portion 42 adapted to engage and hook over a rod 43 ' fixed to lugs 44
depending from the cap 18 95 A key operated locking device is provided
for pivoting the crank arms 36 and 37 about their pivots to cause
engagement between the hooks 42 and rod 43 and simultaneously to lock
the hinge member 25 against vertical 100 movement 'A key operated lock
50 is provided in the housing including a portion 51 rotatable in the
fitting 31 and provided at its outer end with a lock member 52 having
a camm ing portion 53 at one side thereof and a lip 54 105 at an
opposite side thereof Rotation of a key inserted in the lock 50 serves
to rotate the lock member 52 and thus to move it from the position
shown in Fig 6 to that shown in Fig 7 In the latter 'figure the lip 54
passes 110 over the top of and engages a lip 55 provided on the hinge
member 25 and thus not only moves the hinge member downwardly, but
effectively prevents upward movement of such member Rotation, of the
lock member 52 also 115 causes the cam portion 53 to engage a bar 56
rockably secured to and extending between the free terminal ends of
the arms 39 of the crank lever means 35, such rotation moving said
ends downwardly and pivoting the crank 120 levers in a
counterclockwise direction (as seen in Fig 6) 6 to move them into a

position engagIng the hooks 42 with the rod 43 Thus the locking of the
hinge member 25 at one side of the recess and the engagement of the
hooks 125 42 and rod 43 at the opposite side of the recess serves
effectively to lock the cap in position When the cap is so locked in
position, no parts of the locking mechanism are exposed and thus are
not in position to be tam 130 7815,f 777 accurately positioning the
entire mechanism within the housing The housing itself is locked with
the mechanism so positioned by operating the lock 50 to rotate the
locking member to the position of Fig 7 Because of the fact 70 that
the bar 56 is rockably mounted on the end of the arms 39, greater
manufacturing errors can 'be tolerated in the 'apparatus as should one
of the hooks 42 engage with the rod 43 before the other hook 42 makes
an en 75 gagement, the rocking 'bar 56 may tilt slightly thus
permitting one of the crank levers to pivot more than the other.
The housing portion 12 below the recess 20 and into which the slot 74
opens may of course 80 be provided with the usual coin, box for
receiving coin together with a hinged door 8 '5 which mlay be opened
to give access to the coin box.

A known form of apparatus for bringing about heat-exchange between
slurry and hot gases comprises a rotary drum mounted about a
horizontal or inclined axis and divided into sections by two or more
compartments, running axially through the drum, each compartment
having parallel porous walls and usually containing 'a charge of loose
bodies The construction is such that in order to pass axially through
the drum the slurry and gases must flow through at least one
compartment in directions substantially at right angles to the axis
The drum is commonly a rotary kiln, and the compartments occupy only a
short part of the length of the kiln.
This form of apparatus will be more readily understood by reference to
the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a cross-section and
Figure 2 is an elevations, partly in section on the line II-II in
Figure 1.
In this typical apparatus the drum is ian inclined rotary kiln 1
supported on rollers 2.
The ends of the kiln project into stationary hoods 3 and 4, the hood 3
being located at the outlet end for the material to be treated and the

'a pipe 5 The kiln is fired by fuel fed through a burner pipe 6
projecting into the outlet end and the combustion gases leave the kiln
through a pipe 7.
Near the inlet end of the kiln four compartments 8, 9, 10 and 11
extend radially across the kiln to divide it into four sections 12,
131, 14 and 15 The ends of the compartments are closed by solid walls,
and the lower ends of the sections 12 and 14 ' are closed 'by plates
16 while the upper ends of the sections 13 and 15 are closed by plates
1 f 7 The opposed parallel walls of each compartment lPrice 3 s 6 d l
partly consists of grates 18 through which both slurry and gases can
pass Each compartment contains a charge of loose bodies.
In operation, slurry at a temperature of about 10 to 200 C is
introduced through the pipe 5 and flows down the kiln' It can enter
the sections 12 and 114, but not the sections 13 and 165, and it
cannot leave the sections 12 and 14 axially because it is stopped by
the plates 16 The hot gases flowing up the kiln can enter the sections
13 and 15 ' 'but are prevented by the plates 17 from leaving these
sections axially However, as the kiln rotates from the position shown
in Figure 1, in the direction indicated by an arrow, the slurry inside
the section 12 can pass through the grate 18 of the compartment 8 into
the section 15, and thence can flow further down the kiln.
The hot gases after entering the sections 13 and 15 can pass through
all the compartments into the sections 12 and 14, and thence further
up the kiln to 'the hood 4 Eflicient heat exchange takes place between
slurry and gases along the grates 118 ' and inside the lcompartments 8
to 11.
Now the practice hitherto has been to fix the compartmenits to the
inner wall of the kiln or other drum 'at diametrically opposite
positions and to join the inner ends of the 'compartments together all
as shown in Figure 1, so that the compartments and drum form 'a rigid
structure However, when a drum supported on roller bearings is rotated
its crosssectional shape continuously alters under the weight of the
drum, and the compartments are therefore 'constantly subjected to
varying stresses Moreover, the drum itself, being exposed to varying
amounts of heat, undergoes temperature changes which lead ito changes
in shape In turn these increase the stresses to which the compartments
are subjected The result is that the walls of the compartments are
deformed or damaged.
According to the present invention the risk of deformation or damage
is reduced in that as seen in cross-section' eacht compartment is
85,778 fixed at only one end to the drum and is connected at or close
to the other end to another compartment by a flexible connection.
Preferably the compartments are arranged in one or more pairs, the two
compartments of each pair extending radially inwards towards one

another but not reaching the axis of the drum and having
semi-cylindrical inner ends.
One apparatus according to the invention is shown in cross-section in
Figure 3 of the accompanying drawings In this Figure equivalent parts
are identified by the same reference numerals as in Figures 1 and 2 It
will be seen that each compartment is fixed close to one end in the
wall of the kiln The compartments 8 and 11 are connected to each other
at their inner ends by means of a flexible member 19 of, for example,
spring steel; the compartments 9 and 10 are interconnected in a
similar manner Thus any changes in the shape of the kiln will have
practically no mechanical influence on the compartments.
It will be seen that each compartment is connected by a flexible
connection to a compartment next, but not opposite, to it so as to
divide the drum into three sections In other words the sections 12 and
14 merge into one, but this does not matter as these sections are
parallel passages for gases and slurry.
It w Ill,also be seen that each compartment projects outvards through
the wall of the drum and as seen in cross-section has a
semicylindrical outer end Moreover the inner ends 20 are also
semi-cylindrical and thus serve as rigid supports for the coupling
members 19 and furthermore relieve the fall of the loose bodies during
the rotation of the kiln so that the wear on the apparatus and the
noise developed from it are substantially reduced.
