Warbird develops custom data measurement tool to help world-renowned children’s hospital increase international market share
The Opportunity
Recognized as one of the most prestigious and high quality tertiary and quaternary care centers for children in the world, Boston Children’s Hospital sought to increase its share of the global market for children’s healthcare services. According to CFO David Kirshner, although Children’s is renowned for several areas of clinical expertise, there was growing concern about overseas competitors. “We needed to get our arms around how to best measure our international business information flow and ability to process our patients in a timely and effective manner.”
David knew that hospital decision-makers would need concise and timely data about the strengths and weaknesses of the international business and patient flow process within the Children’s system in order to grow international market share. He engaged Warbird Consulting Partners, a professional services firm specializing in value-driven organizational solutions, to develop a measurement and analysis tool designed specifically for hospital executives and physician leaders.

Solution
David and Steve Nichol, Children’s lead director of the measurement effort, worked with Doug Fenstermaker, Warbird Consulting Partners’ managing director and leader of the company’s healthcare practice. A former healthcare executive with 18 years’ experience as a hospital CFO, Doug helped David and Steve develop a detailed measurement device that identified core indicators, process-oriented performance indicators and data elements that would need to be captured. The data would be provided in an easy-to-use dashboard interface that both meshed with and reflected progress on Children’s newly-developed in.

Discuss financial statements, financial statement analysis and ratio analysis
Solution
The financial statements include income statement, balance sheet, cash flow statement and statement of changes in stockholder\'s equity . The purpose of preparing these financial statements is to ensure that the stakeholders of the company are provided with the correct and reliable information on the operations and financial aspects of the company. These statements are frequently used by various parties for investment purposes and understand growth prospects of the company (by investors), to grant loans (by banks and financial institutions) and for tax related issues (by government and state-tax authorities). Important information as to the ownership of the company, assets and liabilities can also be obtained from the balance sheet of the company. Current cash flow position can also be evaluated with the use of cash flow statement.
Financial statement analysis is performed to evaluate the current financial position of the company. Analysts use techniques such as horizontal, vertical and ratio analysis to determine the financial performance of the company over a particular period. Information for 2 or more periods is compared with the use of these tools to analyze the growth/decline in the company\'s overall financial performance/soundness. It is on the basis of information derived from financial statement analysis, that various decisions relating to investment (in the company) are made by outside parties. The company can also perform such comparisons for investing money in growth and expansion projects.
Ratio analysis is considered as one of the most important tools for financial analysis. Different types of ratios can be calculated to determine the liquidity (short term financial position) and solvency (long term financial position) of the company. Overall profitability and operational efficiency can also be determined with the use of ratios. Various forms of ratios can be calculated and compared with the ratios of other companies within the same industry to determine the company\'s overall financial and operational performance. Calculation and comparision of ratios over a period of years can also provide highly useful results with respect to the profitability and growth of the company.

Introduction
To meet operational costs, expense obligations, and make investments, every organization needs to ensure that its capital management is under the right hands. The individuals tasked with capital management ensure that capital and assets are well organized to facilitate expansion. For this to happen, organizations need to ensure that they evaluate their financial statements and financial analysis methods. These methods help organizations make appropriate decisions regarding capital investments, which is critical for growth. Hence, this report will analyze two articles that provide an in-depth analysis of the financial matters of healthcare companies.
Article Review 1
In his book, Argan (2013) states that healthcare companies face a harder time acquiring expansion financing because of their liquidity ratio. The author further explains that healthcare companies face a harder time purchasing short-term liquidity due to their inability to make profits as fast as they generate sales. The expansion of a healthcare center might take more time than the original estimated time, which then causes a push back in the timeline given by financial institutions to start the repayment plan. In most cases, other financial or lending institutions have the needed amount organizations ask for and also provide thorough advice on whether the investment is worth the risk.
Argan (2013) states that the two major issues brought up by the turnaround company on the Caribbean expansion were one: the weakness in their corporate structure and the management reporting and ranks. The concerns around this came up because the turnaround company wondered if the institution had proper management controls in place to ensure high profitability as well as quality (Argan, 2013). High quality comes with high profitability because people need assurance on the condition they receive. The turnaround company also brought up the issue of management controls to ensure that ethics can apply in the organization in support of the right decision making.
Healthcare facilities require looking for other means of securing their finances beyond their banks. According to Argan (2013), other financial institutions, aside from banks, offer lower interest rates, are more flexible, which are luring factors to consider. In his article, the author states that securing financing beyond banks gives companies a better chance of expansion as opposed to looking for finances in banks.

Understanding Similarities and Differences between Financial and Managerial Accounting
Attention
: Susan Thompson
Susan-
In an effort to get you up to speed on our expectations, I wanted to provide some details on the differences you can expect to see between managerial and financial accounting and provide you some examples from both areas.
Financial accounting is the backbone of the day-to-day functions of accounting. From payables, to receivables to collections, this area ensures all of the outstanding bills and debts are paid so the organization can operate. The details received from the day to day management of financial accounting are provided to stakeholders’, creditors, vendors and management to ensure the organization is being forthcoming and so management can use the data to further the position of the company(MUSE: Financial and Managerial Accounting). Reports provided within financial accounting include the following:
Income Statement
Statement of Owners Equity
Balance Sheet
Cash Flow Statement
Each of these documents is used by managerial accounting team members to help make decisions about the future of the organization.
Managerial accounting is optional. This is a team of managers who are trying to plan for future business and need to understand the ebbs and flows of the business itself and how any of the business segments or areas can function more productivity. One thing to note is that Financial Accounting is handled by external persons who try to ensure the strength of financial decisions whereas Managerial Accounting is managed by internal managers responsible for the success of the organizations. Financial Accounting Reporting for the IRS is mandatory and GAAP accounting rules must be adhered too. Managerial Accounting has no set rules nor are they bound to any oversight group and are not required to provide any sort of mandatory reporting.
Additional reports used to analyze the health of an organization are horizontal and vertical analyzes.
Horizontal analysis is where we take a series of reports year over year and try to determine what trends were in assets, equity, cash flow, etc. Using these reports allows the management team to better understand the business and what could be coming in the future. Vertical analysis is where we analyze financial statements based on entries for assets, accounts, liabilities and equities. We review each of these as a proportion of the total account and try to understand what led to any inconsistencies.
If you need any further clarification regarding these concepts, reporting or analysis, please reach out to me directly.
Thank You

The clerks of the Department of State of the United States may be called upon to give evidence of transactions in the Department which are not of a confidential character.
The Secretary of State cannot be called upon as a witness to state transactions of a confidential nature which may have occurred in his Department. But he may be called upon to give testimony of circumstances which were not of that character.
Clerks in the Department of State were directed to be sworn, subject to objections to questions upon confidential matters.
Some point of time must be taken when the power of the Executive over an officer, not removable at his will, must cease. That point of time must be when the constitutional power of appointment has been exercised. And the power has been exercised when the last act required from the person possessing the power has been performed. This last act is the signature of the commission.
If the act of livery be necessary to give validity to the commission of an officer, it has been delivered when executed, and given to the Secretary of State for the purpose of being sealed, recorded, and transmitted to the party.
In cases of commissions to public officers, the law orders the Secretary of State to record them. When, therefore, they are signed and sealed, the order for their being recorded is given, and, whether inserted inserted into the book or not, they are recorded.
When the heads of the departments of the Government are the political or confidential officers of the Executive, merely to execute the will of the President, or rather to act in cases in which the Executive possesses a constitutional or legal discretion, nothing can be more perfectly clear than that their acts are only politically examinable. But where a specific duty is assigned by law, and individual rights depend upon the performance of that duty, it seems equally clear that the individual who considers himself injured has a right to resort to the laws of his country for a remedy.
The President of the United States, by signing the commission, appointed Mr. Marbury a justice of the peace for the County of Washington, in the District of Columbia, and the seal of the United States, affixed thereto by the Secretary of State, is conclusive testimony of the verity of the signature, and of the completion of the appointment; and the appointment conferred on him a legal right to the office for the space of five years. Having this legal right to the office, he has a consequent right to the commission, a refusal to deliver which is a plain violation of that right for which the laws of the country afford him a remedy.
To render a mandamus a proper remedy, the officer to whom it is directed must be one to who.
Christian EthicsChristian ethics deeply align with absolutism. E.docxtroutmanboris
Christian Ethics
Christian ethics deeply align with absolutism. Ethical absolutism claims that moral principles do exist. According to Christians, God created moral absolutes. These absolutes can be seen in God’s revelation. God’s special and general revelation reveal his moral truths. This does not mean that only Christians can understand moral truths. Because humans are made in God’s image, they can recognize moral truths even if they do not believe in God
[1]
. These absolutes were instated by God. Therefore, they apply to all of humanity. This worldview is in direct opposition to the idea of relativism. Christian ethics cannot be viewed through a relativistic point of view. According to relativism, there is no moral truths. There is no absolute distinction between right and wrong within this way of thinking. Right and wrong can be decided by individuals or groups of people. Cultures decide what is right for themselves and their way of life. Even individuals have the ability to decide their own personal moral code. This can seem somewhat reasonable at times. Some things that were considered moral or immoral in the past are viewed differently today. Even with this understanding, Christians deny the idea of relativism. Christians hold to the belief that moral truths come from God. Therefore, these truths do not change. God himself never changes; therefore, his moral truths remain the same. According to Christian ethics, mankind is expected to hold to the moral absolutes mandated by God himself. This understanding is not compatible with relativism. Relativism makes no place of a God. From a relativistic point of view, mankind decides their own morality. Right and wrong are not fixed. In Christian ethics, right and wrong are permanently decided by the God of the universe.
The subjective aspects of Christian ethics can look similar to relativism. The areas that are somewhat subjective in Christian aspects are referred to as the liberties of a Christian. There are some matters that are not said to be morally wrong in the Bible. Some see these issues to be wrong; therefore, they are. Others do not find certain issues to be morally wrong. These individuals are claiming their Christian liberty. One of these issues is drinking alcohol. Some Christians believe that ingesting any amount of alcohol is morally wrong. According to the idea of Christian liberty, it would be wrong for the individuals who hold to this belief to drink alcohol. Others do not have this conviction and are not doing wrong by consuming alcohol. On the surface, the idea of Christian liberty can seem to be related to relativism, but upon closer inspection these ideas are not closely related. Christian liberty is a Biblical concept that harmonize well with the overall message of the Bible. Relativism is nowhere found in the Bible. The Bible is clear that there are universal moral laws. These laws are placed upon humanity by God himself. There are some areas where the Bible remain.

The purpose of this assignment is to familiarize you with financial statements, the need to align the financials and the strategic direction of the firm, and the process of performing horizontal and vertical analyses of a company's balance sheets and income statements.
You will be provided with a scenario and a variances analysis. You will use the information in both to create a memo in which you demonstrate your audit financial statements and expenditures based on organizational priorities.
Instructions
Scenario
You're a healthcare administration fellow at the prestigious Stanford Healthcare. You have been rotating through the various departments over the past nine months and now you have the honor of working under the mentorship of Chief Financial Officer Linda Hoff.
Stanford Medicine includes Stanford Healthcare, Stanford Children's Hospital, and Lucile Packard Children's Hospital Stanford. This organization uses an integrated approach to strategic planning, which incorporates jointly agreed upon strategic priorities from its various entities. It also ensures a high degree of congruence in strategic focus by each entity.
Before outlining the strategic priorities for Stanford Medicine, it is important to note that a firm's directional strategy comprises three discrete yet interwoven components: vision, mission, and goals (or, in this case, priorities). Armed with this knowledge, you have familiarized yourself with the vision, mission, and priorities of Stanford Medicine. Below is what you found.
When examining a company's financials, it is prudent to keep the directional strategy of the company in mind. After all, in order to advance many strategic priorities, which include fulfilling the mission and positioning the organization to achieve its vision for the future, proper management of the firm's scarce resources is vital. Failure to properly manage the financial performance of the organization can compromise the company's ability to maintain a competitive advantage in the marketplace.

Read the scenario below. Then draft a 3–4 page business memorandum to Linda Hoff, Stanford's CFO. In your memo, codify your findings and interpretations from the horizontal and vertical analyses and the level of alignment between the company's fiscal management and its strategic direction. Include an Excel spreadsheet as an attachment to the memo. In this memo you will:
Review the year-over-year variances contained in the audited Stanford balance sheets and income statements, which are contained within the provided
Week 5 Assignment Spreadsheet [XLSX]
for fiscal years 2015 through 2018. You'll be expected to pay particular attention to the negative variances (color coded in "red") that
you believe
to be potentially the most impactful to Stanford.
Speculate as to the reasons for the negative variances.
Examine the common size balance sheets and income statements looking for abnormally low or high ratios based on what you know about the line item and what you observe in the data for the other fiscal years.
Look for patterns in the line items over time (2015 through 2018) and identify any unusual findings that may need to be examined further.
Make a judgement regarding the alignment of the organization's fiscal management with its strategic direction of the firm. Fiscal management is based on your horizontal and vertical analyses. The strategic direction is based on the vision, mission, and strategic priorities of Stanford.

Syllabus

CHPSI think you made a really good point that Howard lacks poli.docxtroutmanboris
CH/PS
I think you made a really good point that Howard lacks political aspects-especially for presidency. I have no heard his speeches quite yet (since I tend to stray away from politics altogether because people are so aggressive), do you think he is a great leader-type and is he charismatic at all? Great leaders, especially for presidency, should be honest, charismatic, and not only cater to the audience's needs but to the entire country's needs without sugar coating things.
Also, I am not sure what you mean by "In order to improve his leadership style, Jeff should change his model of carrying out business activities. This is because it can be copied and imitated by other companies (Mauri, 2016)".- how can it be imitted by other companies? In what way?
Do you think Jeff Bezos is a bad leader? and why?
CH/AR
I found your comparison of Howard Schultz and Jeff Bezos interesting and compelling. When I was looking at the list of leaders to select from, it was staggering to me how many of the corporate leaders have run or are planning to run for political office. I'm not sure, given our current political environment, that running a large corporation is the right background and experience for the leader of the United States. We'll see what happens in the next year and a half!
Amazon is an amazing, transformative company to watch. I work in the financial services industry and one of our leaders recently described our competition not as other financial services firms but as Amazon. Financial services firms pretty much all offer the same products and services and at a very reasonable price point. Amazon, however, has excelled in service delivery. I would imagine that at sometime in the future, Amazon will partner with a financial service firm to deliver products and services. I'll admit that I was and still am skeptical about Amazon's purchase of Whole Foods, but Bezos seems to be up for trying just about anything.
In your analysis of the two leaders, you didn't mention directly the challenges faced by either the leaders or the organization. Last year, Starbucks was all over the news regarding the incident involving two African American gentlemen and how they were treated by a manger at Starbucks. I'm curious how you or others in the class through about how Schultz led the organization through that crisis. Bezos, as well, has not been immune to controversy with his recent affair and divorce becoming public. How do the personal lives and behaviors of leader impact the organizations they lead? Should it matter?

Chose one person to reply to:
ALBORES
1. Were Manning’s actions legal under the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act, and what are the possible penalties for violating the act?
The Foreign Corrupt Practices Act states (1977) “It shall be unlawful for any issuer...to offer, payment, promise to pay, or authorization of the payment of any money, or offer, gift, promise to give... “. Manning assumed the duty of an issuer because he attended dinner with the prime minister to discuss the contract. Then, Manning offered to fly the prime minister to New York, which he then promised to pay for all of the prime minister's expenses. However, according to the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act (1977) a promise or offer is acceptable if the expense was ”reasonable and bona fide expenditure, such as travel and lodging expenses, incurred by or on behalf of a foreign official… was directly related to the promotion, demonstration, or explanation of products or services”. Manning promised to fly out the prime minister because he wanted to “discuss business further” (UMUC, 2019). Further, Manning used company funds to take the prime minister to luxurious activities and restaurants because he wanted to retain the contract from the prime minister.
Even though Manning did not directly give money to the prime minister, he authorized payment for the prime minster’s two-week stay, which did not involve discussing the contract. Out of the two weeks, business was only conducted for a day. In addition, Manning can be held responsible for bribing the customs officials at Neristan. According to the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act (1977), it is unlawful to influence “any act or decision of such foreign official in his official capacity... omit to do any act in violation of the lawful duty of such official”. Manning influenced the customs officials because Manning gave each custom official $100 to clear the shipment. Custom officials act on behalf of the Neristan government and sometimes require large shipments to be inspected. Manny will likely be held responsible for offering payment to the customs officials in exchange for expediting the company’s shipment.
If Manning violated the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act, he could face imprisonment. Also, the company may have to pay the penalty. The penalty for violating the act is “a fine of up to $2 million per violation. Likewise, an individual may face up to five years in prison and/or a fine of $250,000 per violation of the anti-bribery provision” (Woody, 2018, p. 275).
2. Were Manning’s actions legal under the UK Bribery Act and what are the possible penalties for violating the act?
Based on the UK Bribery Act (2010), an individual is guilty of bribing an official if “intention is to influence F (government official) in F's capacity as a foreign public official...intend to obtain or retain business, or an advantage in the conduct of business.”. Manning bribed the prime minister because he stated: “If, after we are done conducting busi.

Choosing your literary essay topic on
Disgrace
by J. M. Coetzee is the first step to writing your literary analysis paper.
After reading the novel, you should be able to decide in which direction you'd like to take your paper.
Topics/ approaches
(Focus on only one of the following, though some may overlap):
Analyze one of the minor characters, such as Petrus.
Example
: Analyze not only the chosen characters' personality but also what role they played in advancing the overall theme of the novel.
The protagonist's conflict, the hurdles to be overcome, and how he resolves it.
Examples:
It could be hope for change, both in South Africa and in David Lurie. OR: the disgrace David Lurie has suffered over the affair with a student and how that matches the disgrace South Africa has suffered through apartheid.
The function of setting to reinforce theme and characterization.
Example
: post-apartheid South Africa is a setting arguably more important than anything else in the novel. Your outside sources would be a bit of history concerning apartheid. The use of literary devices to communicate theme: imagery, metaphor, symbolism, foreshadowing, irony
Symbolism in the novel--
Examples:
Determine if David Lurie represents the old, white authorities of South Africa, while Lucy represents the new white people of South Africa. OR: Analyze what dogs symbolize in this story. Another example: What is symbolized by the opera David Lurie is writing on Byron?
Careful examination of one or more central scenes and its/their crucial role in plot development, resolution of conflict, and exposition of the theme.
Example:
Analyze one or more scenes in which hope that change for the better is possible through a character's remorse and subsequent action, for example, the scene in which David Lurie apologizes to the parents OR the scene in which Lucy gets raped.
The possible issue to be addressed in introduction or conclusion:
Characteristics that make the work typical (or atypical) of the period, the setting, or the author that produced it. For this information, you must go to a library database (you must read "How to Access Miami Dade Databases" if you don't know how) or a valid search site, such as Google Scholar (there is often a fee for this one).
Do
not
open or close with biographical material on the author. Biographical material is important as it influences the author’s writing only and should not be a focus of your paper.
Guidelines for Literary Essay
Be aware that you will be writing about a novel, which in its broadest sense is any extended fictional narrative almost always in prose, in which the representation of character is often the focus. Good authors use the elements of fiction, such as plot, theme, setting etc. purposefully, with a very clear goal in mind. One of the paths to literary analysis is to discover what the author's purpose is with each of his choices. Avoid the problem th.
Choosing your Philosophical Question The Final Project is an opp.docxtroutmanboris
Choosing your Philosophical Question
The Final Project is an opportunity for you to investigate one of the discussion questions to a much greater degree than in the forums. For your Final Project you will choose a philosophical question (stage 1), conduct an analysis of the claims and arguments relevant to the question by reading the primary texts of the philosopher (stage 2), and then take a position on the chosen question and offer an argument in support of your position (stage 3).
For this first stage of your Final Project assignment, (a) choose a question that appears as a discussion question (listed below, with some exceptions). You may choose one that you have previously begun to answer in the discussion forums, or one that you have yet to consider, then (b) explain briefly why you are interested in exploring this philosopher, the primary text and the question further. Submit this assignment on a Word .docx.
Week Four: Philosopher: Thomas Aquinas, Primary Text: Summa Theologica, Part 1, Question 2, Article 1-3
Q1. Does God really exist?
Question to write on, and answer the question fully in all its parts. Be mindful of the question. You are making a claim about something and offering support for it. Try to use examples from the Primary Texts you have read and/or your own experiences in that support.
DISCUSSION QUESTION CHOICE #1: Philosophy of Religion. Study Aquinas' five "ways" of demonstrating God's existence in the learning resources then engage in the study of ontology by examining your belief in God:
Answer the question: Does God really exist?
Use Aquinas and your own reasoning in your argument.

The Existence of God
Because the chief aim of sacred doctrine is to teach the knowledge of God, not only as He is in
Himself, but also as He is the beginning of things and their last end, and especially of rational
creatures, as is clear from what has been already said, therefore, in our endeavor to expound this
science, we shall treat: (1) Of God; (2) Of the rational creature’s advance towards God; (3) Of
Christ, Who as man, is our way to God.
In treating of God there will be a threefold division: For we shall consider (1) Whatever concerns
the Divine Essence; (2) Whatever concerns the distinctions of Persons; (3) Whatever concerns the
procession of creatures from Him
Concerning the Divine Essence, we must consider: (1) Whether God exists? (2) The manner of His
existence, or, rather, what is not the manner of His existence; (3) Whatever concerns His
operations — namely, His knowledge, will, power.
Concerning the first, there are three points of inquiry: (1) Whether the proposition “God exists” is
self-evident? (2) Whether it is demonstrable? (3) Whether God exists?-

Operation “Blue Star” is the only event in the history of Independent India where the state went into war with its own people. Even after about 40 years it is not clear if it was culmination of states anger over people of the region, a political game of power or start of dictatorial chapter in the democratic setup.
The people of Punjab felt alienated from main stream due to denial of their just demands during a long democratic struggle since independence. As it happen all over the word, it led to militant struggle with great loss of lives of military, police and civilian personnel. Killing of Indira Gandhi and massacre of innocent Sikhs in Delhi and other India cities was also associated with this movement.

The Roman Empire A Historical Colossus.pdfkaushalkr1407
The Roman Empire, a vast and enduring power, stands as one of history's most remarkable civilizations, leaving an indelible imprint on the world. It emerged from the Roman Republic, transitioning into an imperial powerhouse under the leadership of Augustus Caesar in 27 BCE. This transformation marked the beginning of an era defined by unprecedented territorial expansion, architectural marvels, and profound cultural influence.
The empire's roots lie in the city of Rome, founded, according to legend, by Romulus in 753 BCE. Over centuries, Rome evolved from a small settlement to a formidable republic, characterized by a complex political system with elected officials and checks on power. However, internal strife, class conflicts, and military ambitions paved the way for the end of the Republic. Julius Caesar’s dictatorship and subsequent assassination in 44 BCE created a power vacuum, leading to a civil war. Octavian, later Augustus, emerged victorious, heralding the Roman Empire’s birth.
Under Augustus, the empire experienced the Pax Romana, a 200-year period of relative peace and stability. Augustus reformed the military, established efficient administrative systems, and initiated grand construction projects. The empire's borders expanded, encompassing territories from Britain to Egypt and from Spain to the Euphrates. Roman legions, renowned for their discipline and engineering prowess, secured and maintained these vast territories, building roads, fortifications, and cities that facilitated control and integration.
The Roman Empire’s society was hierarchical, with a rigid class system. At the top were the patricians, wealthy elites who held significant political power. Below them were the plebeians, free citizens with limited political influence, and the vast numbers of slaves who formed the backbone of the economy. The family unit was central, governed by the paterfamilias, the male head who held absolute authority.
Culturally, the Romans were eclectic, absorbing and adapting elements from the civilizations they encountered, particularly the Greeks. Roman art, literature, and philosophy reflected this synthesis, creating a rich cultural tapestry. Latin, the Roman language, became the lingua franca of the Western world, influencing numerous modern languages.
Roman architecture and engineering achievements were monumental. They perfected the arch, vault, and dome, constructing enduring structures like the Colosseum, Pantheon, and aqueducts. These engineering marvels not only showcased Roman ingenuity but also served practical purposes, from public entertainment to water supply.
June 3, 2024 Anti-Semitism Letter Sent to MIT President Kornbluth and MIT Cor...Levi Shapiro
Letter from the Congress of the United States regarding Anti-Semitism sent June 3rd to MIT President Sally Kornbluth, MIT Corp Chair, Mark Gorenberg
Dear Dr. Kornbluth and Mr. Gorenberg,
The US House of Representatives is deeply concerned by ongoing and pervasive acts of antisemitic
harassment and intimidation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Failing to act decisively to ensure a safe learning environment for all students would be a grave dereliction of your responsibilities as President of MIT and Chair of the MIT Corporation.
This Congress will not stand idly by and allow an environment hostile to Jewish students to persist. The House believes that your institution is in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and the inability or
unwillingness to rectify this violation through action requires accountability.
Postsecondary education is a unique opportunity for students to learn and have their ideas and beliefs challenged. However, universities receiving hundreds of millions of federal funds annually have denied
students that opportunity and have been hijacked to become venues for the promotion of terrorism, antisemitic harassment and intimidation, unlawful encampments, and in some cases, assaults and riots.
The House of Representatives will not countenance the use of federal funds to indoctrinate students into hateful, antisemitic, anti-American supporters of terrorism. Investigations into campus antisemitism by the Committee on Education and the Workforce and the Committee on Ways and Means have been expanded into a Congress-wide probe across all relevant jurisdictions to address this national crisis. The undersigned Committees will conduct oversight into the use of federal funds at MIT and its learning environment under authorities granted to each Committee.
• The Committee on Education and the Workforce has been investigating your institution since December 7, 2023. The Committee has broad jurisdiction over postsecondary education, including its compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, campus safety concerns over disruptions to the learning environment, and the awarding of federal student aid under the Higher Education Act.
• The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is investigating the sources of funding and other support flowing to groups espousing pro-Hamas propaganda and engaged in antisemitic harassment and intimidation of students. The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is the principal oversight committee of the US House of Representatives and has broad authority to investigate “any matter” at “any time” under House Rule X.
• The Committee on Ways and Means has been investigating several universities since November 15, 2023, when the Committee held a hearing entitled From Ivory Towers to Dark Corners: Investigating the Nexus Between Antisemitism, Tax-Exempt Universities, and Terror Financing. The Committee followed the hearing with letters to those institutions on January 10, 202

My case Study:
Measurement and Analysis Case Study:
Boston Children’s Hospital; Boston, Massachusetts
Warbird develops custom data measurement tool to help world-
renowned children’s hospital increase international market
share
The Opportunity
Recognized as one of the most prestigious and high quality
tertiary and quaternary care centers for children in the world,
Boston Children’s Hospital sought to increase its share of the
global market for children’s healthcare services. According to
CFO David Kirshner, although Children’s is renowned for
several areas of clinical expertise, there was growing concern
about overseas competitors. “We needed to get our arms around
how to best measure our international business information flow
and ability to process our patients in a timely and effective
manner.”
David knew that hospital decision-makers would need concise
and timely data about the strengths and weaknesses of the
international business and patient flow process within the
Children’s system in order to grow international market share.
He engaged Warbird Consulting Partners, a professional
services firm specializing in value-driven organizational
solutions, to develop a measurement and analysis tool designed
specifically for hospital executives and physician leaders.
The
Solution
3. David and Steve Nichol, Children’s lead director of the
measurement effort, worked with Doug Fenstermaker, Warbird
Consulting Partners’ managing director and leader of the
company’s healthcare practice. A former healthcare executive
with 18 years’ experience as a hospital CFO, Doug helped
David and Steve develop a detailed measurement device that
identified core indicators, process-oriented performance
indicators and data elements that would need to be captured.
The data would be provided in an easy-to-use dashboard
interface that both meshed with and reflected progress on
Children’s newly-developed international business strategic
plan.
The project was completed in approximately 90 days and results
were presented to the internal board that governs international
business, chaired by Alan B. Retik, M.D. During this time,
project managers also partnered with Huron Consulting Group’s
higher education practice to assist in the creation of a long-
range strategic plan for international business development at
Boston Children’s Hospital. The hospital embarked on a multi-
phase effort to implement the measurement system. Some key
performance indicators – such as those related to revenue –
were put into operation immediately while other, more complex
indicators continued to be developed and refined.
The Boston Children’s Hospital international patient data
4. measurement tool shows how Warbird can add value by custom-
designing a solution to meet discreet organizational needs. The
selected data indicators provide hospital executives, managers
and physician leaders important information about the
timeliness and effectiveness of information flow. The data also
provides insight into communications and processes in
managing a patient at Children’s – from the point of inquiry to
the point of returning the patient to the country of origin. By
being able to easily access critical indicator data about patient
processing, hospital leaders are able to identify points where
added efficiency will make Children’s a more attractive choice
for patients coming from overseas.
Results: Measuring turn-around time and key economic
indicators
The following is an excerpt of the table prepared for Boston
Children’s Hospital that shows the nature of the custom-
designed measurement tool and the types of indicators to be
measured. Each indictor helps hospital leaders and Children’s
international oversight board understand where the process is
effective and efficient and where it can be improved. This
indicator system was integrated with the hospital’s international
business strategy to give management and others insight into the
effectiveness of Children’s overall international business
approach, including timeliness, communications, information
flow and actual patient care delivery. The hospital populated the
5. table with indicators from its data systems and uses the table as
a dashboard for performance reporting to Boston Children’s
Hospital senior leaders and international board of directors
Running Head: FINANCIAL ANALYSIS1
FINANCIAL ANALYSIS2
FINANCIAL ANALYSIS
Financial Analysis
Financial analysis usually involves the use of financial data in
order to make an assessment of the company's financial
performance and it is used to make a recommendation on how to
6. make an improvement. It is observed that financial analysis
usually carries out their work in excel sheet in order to make an
analyze historical data and make possible projections on how
the company is going to perform in future (Hales, 2006). In this
part of the paper, we are going to make an analysis of major
forms of financial analysis, have a look at the way they are used
in an organization and the possible similarity and differences
which might exist.
There are several Financial Analysis techniques which include;
1. Vertical
2. Horizontal
3. Leverage
4. Growth
5. Profitability
In this paper, we are going to have a look at Vertical and
Horizontal Financial Analysis
Vertical Financial Analysis
This is a form of financial analysis which involves having a
look at the various components of the income statement and
dividing them by revenues in order to express them as
percentages. In order to make this exercise more effective, there
is need to benchmark against them with other companies in the
same industry in order to determine how well a given company
is performing (Vance, 2002). It is also termed as common sized
income statement as it allows an analyst to compare companies
7. of different sizes by evaluating their margins instead of their
dollars.
Horizontal Financial Analysis
Horizontal Financial analysis simply involves taking several
years of financial data and making a comparison with each other
in order to determine the possible growth rate.
Horizontal Analysis. This form of analysis is essential for
analysis as they use it to determine whether a given company is
either growing or declining and the identification of key
important trends.
When building this form of financial models, there is a need to
typically have at least three years of historical financial
information and have at least five years of forecasted
information. This in return provides 8 years of data which
he/she can use in order to make a performance of meaningful
trend analysis which is also used in benchmarking against other
companies within the same industry (Vance, 2002,).
8. Comparison between Vertical and Horizontal Financial Analysis
Horizontal vs
Vertical Analysis
Horizontal Analysis usually involves analysis of financial
statements for a given company over several years in order to
come up with a decision.
The vertical analysis involves a comparison of one item with
another in order to come up with a decision
Main Purpose
Its main purpose is to compare line items in order to calculate
the change that has occurred over a given period
The main purpose of vertical analysis is to compare a change of
an item in terms of percentages
Usefulness
It plays a pivotal role when it comes to comparing the company
results from the previous years
The horizontal analysis becomes more useful when comparing
company results with previous financial years.
Vertical analysis is useful when it comes to comparing the
results of a company with other companies in the same industry.
.
9. Similarities
One of the similarities between the two is that they are all used
with the aim of gauging a firm's performance against other
companies in the same industry. The second use for these two
financial analysis tools is that they are used by the top
management of an organization in order to formulate key
decisions (Hales, 2006).
With Boston Massachusetts Children’s Hospital the Liquidity
ratio would be great in helping to determine if the hospital is
staying on track and able to meet the obligations of its patients.
The hospital needs to have a clear vision of its financial
standing in order to operate successfully.
Liquidity Ratio
Current Assets for the last two years:
2012 1.9%
2011 2.4%
Financial Statement 2
10. Summary of Financial Statements
Boston Children’s Hospital; Boston, Massachusetts Financial
Statements
The Financial standing of Boston Massachusetts has not really
been consistent. Over the last two years in many parts of our
finances we have dropped in some areas and increased
consistently in others.
11. Current Assets for the last two years:
2012 1.9%
2011 2.4%
Current liabilities for the last two years:
2011 1$36,455
2012 $89,088
There was decrease in our liabilities we are working diligently
to continuously reduce this number.
Trends
Net cash flow from operating expenses was the lowest in 2011.
We have regained an increase in 2012 but with new studies and
programs being implemented this was projected. As our hospital
continues to grow and patient retention increases the numbers
for operating will soon begin to decrease.
Financial Management in our hospital it very important and
does come with risks. The trend with our cash used by
investments was in the negative for a while and that has begun
to become a bit steadier.
12. The negative amount shown for cash used by financing
activities reflects what we have paid out in dividends to our
shareholders, repurchase of common stock, and retirements.
201220112010
Financial Position
Although over the last two years both our assets and liabilities
have decreased. Boston Massachusetts Children’s Hospital in
still in a stable financial position to take care of the needs our
patients and stakeholders. With effective leadership and new
programs there will be sustainable ground for the growth of the
business in the future

Running Head: Capital Decisions1
FINANCIAL MANAGEMENT IN HEALTH CARE4
17. Capital Decisions
Discusses why is it more difficult for healthcare companies to
get expansion financing in the today's economic climate and
financial issues with expansions.
Health care companies are consistently facing financial
difficulties in the current economy. The main reason as to why
the healthcare companies are facing difficulties in access
finance is because of the large number of uninsured individuals
who have been seeking the services. The rate of reimbursement
from both the Medicare and the medical has also contributed as
the it’s very low. Thus, a financial burden which is very
significant has been put on the hospitals (Finkler, Ward, &
Calabrese, 2018).
The number of underpayments for the two has also increased
making the companies to have cost shifts thus increasing the
cost of the services as well as the supplies. Shortage of staffs is
also a contributing factor to these challenges. This has
increased the level of debt owed by these companies making it
18. difficult to refinance the loan that is already existing or even
acquire more capital as they can never access credit. More to
these the company has started filling bankruptcy and some have
gone to the level of closing (Baker, Baker, & Dworkin, 2017)
Describes why healthcare companies need to look beyond their
banks to secure financing.
Health companies should look secure financing from various
sources as the bank’s loans may not be always available. The
poor credit rating the health companies are facing as they are
having difficulties in paying their loans may not guarantee them
a bank loan. Other source of financing such as crowd sourcing,
leveraging among other may be cheap, easily available and the
procedure of acquiring the financing could be simple unlike the
bank loans.
Explains the importance of making a good case for expanding
healthcare providers' methods of calculating break-even
analysis.
Making a good case for analysis the breakeven will be vital as it
will help in determining the if what the health companies are
charging for every services or product offered is enough to cater
for all the cost inquired to produce the product or make the
services available. This will also help in analyzing the amount
of sales required to reach the break even. The most important is
that the healthcare companies can assess what their true
operating cost is as well as their prices. In addition to thee the
19. manager will get an insight on their price accuracy and weigh if
the goals set on the sales are realistic (Finkler, Ward, &
Calabrese, 2018)
Discuss non-financial factors do the authors believe need to be
included in break-even analysis?
The author believes that during the analysis it is important to
consider the volume of sales, the depreciation of the tools and
equipment’s being used, the technology, goals setting, the
operating environment which includes the political, economic,
cultural religion and the sociological factors. The analysis must
also consider the changes that may occur in the course of the
operation (Baker, Baker, & Dworkin, 2017).
Explain how current issues, such as the Affordable Care Act,
affect break-even analysis.
The Affordable care Act, which is legislation, has made
significant efforts in reforming the systems of the healthcare as
well as in controlling the spending of the healthcare in the US.
This Act has decreased all fixed costs of various companies
which has directly reduced the production units for the break-
even as the fixed cost reduces. The margin of involvement has
remained constant.
Summarizes the authors' viewpoints and apply the concepts to
your case. Also include a summary of your viewpoint in
comparison to the authors'. Be sure to specifically address the
methods that influence capital investments and decision-
20. making; and explore methods of analyzing capital investments
(Payback, Net Present Value, and Internal Rate of Return). This
report will serve as your Capital Management section of your
project.
The author concludes that every decision that is made in the
health care department has some implications that are ethical.
This implication either affects the patients, the leaders or the
service providers. While investing capital, it is important for
companies to ensure that the capital invested should give the
best return which are possible. The management should ensure
that there is maximization of the wealth of the shareholder as
well as increased profit not forgetting the quality of services.
The decision is mostly influencing by the management outlook,
the growth opportunities being created the changes in
technology, the strategies used by the competitors, the cash
flows in the budget, the market predictions, the fiscal incentives
as well as other factors which are non-economic. The capital
investment can be analyzed using the payback period which
explain the amount of time that the company will take in order
to recover its initial investment from the profit and the savings,
the net present value method which puts into consideration of
value of money over time, and the internal rate of return which
gives an estimate of the profitability of an investment. These
methods will help in knowing how profitable certain
investments will be (Finkler, Ward, & Calabrese, 2018,).
21. In conclusion, it is also important to put into consideration all
the stakeholders and how they are affected by a certain project
before investing in it.
Analyze the key points of the Enron Scandal and specifically
address how professionalism and ethics influence decision-
making. How do unethical standards impact an organization's
performance and capital investments? Reference the concepts of
embezzlement and losses. Explain how you maintain ethical
standards in relation to Code of Ethics.
The key points incudes having a balance of the quality of care
provided as well as the productivity which means that the
companies should analyses if their focus in providing the
healthcare id guided by the right principles. The other key point
is on how access to health care should be improved. It is ethical
for the healthcare to ensure that all individuals can access the
medical care which is basic. In addition to this it is ethical for
the system to encourage growth of the workforce in the health
care by supporting them for future service providing. This
involves having the right team whom the company offers
regular training a way of preparing them for future service
provision (Nowicki, 2018).
