The main Greek fighting formation was the phalanx, which consisted of heavy infantry called hoplites arranged in a rectangular formation. Hoplites wore bronze armor including a chest plate, helmet, and greaves, and carried a large shield and 2.5 meter spear. They fought by maintaining tight formation in the phalanx and pushing forward against the opposing line with their shields and spear thrusts. While effective, the phalanx formation was not maneuverable and hoplite armor was very heavy.
