Snapshots have been a key feature of primary storage infrastructures that IT professionals have relied on for years. But storage systems have traditionally been able to support only a limited number of active snapshots. And snapshots, being pointers and not actual data, are also susceptible to a primary storage system failure. As a result, most IT professionals use snapshots sparingly for protecting data. In this webinar Storage Switzerland and Nexenta show you how primary storage can be architected so that snapshots are able to meet almost all of the data protection requirements an organization has.

Archive First: An Intelligent Data Archival Strategy, Part 1 of 3Hitachi Vantara
For many IT organizations there is simply too much file data to deal with. You may have some of the significant IT challenges, such as inadequate storage space, long backup and restore operations, limitations on available power and floor space, extended or even infinite retention periods, finding the right information in a timely manner, and more. The first step to controlling this file – or "unstructured" – data is intelligent archiving, which preserves access to data from its original location, and stores the data elsewhere. Storing that data in a platform that scales while consuming the least resources possible, protects and preserves data, makes it always available and easily accessible, and helps you extract value from previously "dark" data. View this webcast to learn how to: Reclaim or defer high performance storage purchases. Save more on all the costs of owning and maintaining growing content. Back up less data and reduce capacity needs. Set yourself up for what’s next. For more information on Archive first please read: http://www.hds.com/assets/pdf/hitachi-datasheet-archive-first.pdf
This document discusses implementing disk-based data protection and recovery. It recommends taking a tiered approach with five layers - application, production, recovery, protection, and archive tiers. The recovery tier is where disk systems would replace tape to provide faster restore times and more frequent backups. For best results, the document advises selecting a single vendor that can provide tightly integrated, modular solutions for each tier built on a common software platform. This comprehensive approach maximizes reliability while minimizing complexity.

How to plan Disaster Recovery in a five simple stepsPawel Maczka
Do not panic! You have a Disaster Recovery Plan, right❓
Whether you like it or not, your IT infrastructure is vulnerable. If you thought that making backups is enough to guarantee #businesscontinuity in the event of a disaster, you are wrong.
◾️ If something bad happens, how long will it take to recover my business data?
◾️ How will this affect my #business in the future?
◾️ How to resume operation after #disasterrecovery?
◾️ How much does it cost me to not have access to my critical data for some time?
If you haven't asked yourself these questions, then you've probably never heard of a Disaster Recovery Plan. Better not to take this issue lightly, because it is assumed that 90% of companies without DRP will fail after a disaster. Moreover, nearly half of the small businesses that have implemented DR strategies, have never tested it.

Graspan: A Big Data System for Big Code AnalysisAftab Hussain
We built a disk-based parallel graph system, Graspan, that uses a novel edge-pair centric computation model to compute dynamic transitive closures on very large program graphs.
We implement context-sensitive pointer/alias and dataflow analyses on Graspan. An evaluation of these analyses on large codebases such as Linux shows that their Graspan implementations scale to millions of lines of code and are much simpler than their original implementations.
These analyses were used to augment the existing checkers; these augmented checkers found 132 new NULL pointer bugs and 1308 unnecessary NULL tests in Linux 4.4.0-rc5, PostgreSQL 8.3.9, and Apache httpd 2.2.18.

Microservice Teams - How the cloud changes the way we workSven Peters
A lot of technical challenges and complexity come with building a cloud-native and distributed architecture. The way we develop backend software has fundamentally changed in the last ten years. Managing a microservices architecture demands a lot of us to ensure observability and operational resiliency. But did you also change the way you run your development teams?
Sven will talk about Atlassian’s journey from a monolith to a multi-tenanted architecture and how it affected the way the engineering teams work. You will learn how we shifted to service ownership, moved to more autonomous teams (and its challenges), and established platform and enablement teams.

- Profit erosion
- Increase IT costs due to Shadow IT
Data Access
- Frustrated with data access requests to IT
- Can’t get access to data quickly
- Can’t get access to fresh data sets
- Often make replicate data copies
▪ Sometimes to the Cloud – Shadow IT
▪ Difficult to keep track of
▪ Violates corporate governance policies
- Once data is obtained, still need to provision
systems and application
Data Access (steps to provide data access)
- Argue with LoB reason for request
- Identify data being requested
- Find the data
- Find a secure location to put the data that
doesn’t impact production
- Find location that has needed capacity
- Stream the “data” to the proper location
- “Try” to track this data (difficult and typically it
chews up valuable disk space)
- Note: This is just the data, not the
application
