Qatar was awarded hosting rights for the 2022 FIFA World Cup, surprising many Asians and Americans. While small in size, Qatar has invested heavily in sports for years. It has experience hosting large sporting events like the 2006 Asian Games and regularly hosts tennis and motorcycle competitions. Qatar plans to spend $100 billion on new infrastructure to support the World Cup, including over a dozen new stadiums, expanded transportation, and accommodations to deal with summer heat over 40 degrees Celsius.
