Examples of heterotrophs include fungi, animals and humans.
Ants Knowing When A Nest Mate Dies
Ants have two types of chemical smells that allow them to identify if a nest mate is alive or dead. When alive, ants give off an "alive chemical smell" but after death they stop emitting this and only give off a "dead chemical smell" from decomposing bodily fluids and tissues. Ants remove deceased nest mates because their decomposing gases could poison the colony, and any infections could spread, though this also risks transferring insecticides that killed the dead ant.

There are 4 phases of wound healing: hemostasis, inflammation, proliferation, and remodeling. This document also describes the mechanism of wound healing. Factors that affect healing include infection, uncontrolled diabetes, poor nutrition, age, anemia, the presence of foreign bodies, etc.
