Introducing Generalized Deduplication for Energy-efficient IoT Networks with ...LEGATO project
Abstract: The growing number of Internet of Things (IoT) devices is increasing the network traffic load globally. As a solution to this problem we propose Hermes, a network protocol that leverages the concept of generalized deduplication (GD) to reduce not only the network traffic, but also the energy consumption of devices. GD is a novel technique that maps identical and similar data chunks to a so called basis while applying an error correcting code onto them. The difference between the original data chunk and the basis is encoded in a deviation.
With this poster we motivate the use and purpose of the Hermes protocol. Then we outline the concept of GD and describe the architecture of a Hermes network including the message exchange. Finally, we highlight our micro- and macro-benchmark results on a synthetic data set.
Poster presented by Christian Göttel at the LEGaTO Final Event: 'Low-Energy Heterogeneous Computing Workshop'

This document is the proposal for the TRACKOER project that is supported by the JISC Open Educational Resources Rapid Innovation programme (OERRI). In TRACKOER we are developing potential solutions to how to keep track of content in the open. We are looking both at ways to follow content as it moves from one server to another and then gets reused, and at how to capture other changes that people may make with cut and paste editing. The rationale for the project is to understand whether content gets reused but it also offers a model that could help track other activity around shared content. More about the project progress is available via http://track.olnet.org/ and the project blog at http://cloudworks.ac.uk/tag/view/TrackOER .

Observability Concepts EVERY Developer Should Know -- DeveloperWeek Europe.pdfPaige Cruz
Monitoring and observability aren’t traditionally found in software curriculums and many of us cobble this knowledge together from whatever vendor or ecosystem we were first introduced to and whatever is a part of your current company’s observability stack.
While the dev and ops silo continues to crumble….many organizations still relegate monitoring & observability as the purview of ops, infra and SRE teams. This is a mistake - achieving a highly observable system requires collaboration up and down the stack.
I, a former op, would like to extend an invitation to all application developers to join the observability party will share these foundational concepts to build on:
PHP Frameworks: I want to break free (IPC Berlin 2024)Ralf Eggert
In this presentation, we examine the challenges and limitations of relying too heavily on PHP frameworks in web development. We discuss the history of PHP and its frameworks to understand how this dependence has evolved. The focus will be on providing concrete tips and strategies to reduce reliance on these frameworks, based on real-world examples and practical considerations. The goal is to equip developers with the skills and knowledge to create more flexible and future-proof web applications. We'll explore the importance of maintaining autonomy in a rapidly changing tech landscape and how to make informed decisions in PHP development.
This talk is aimed at encouraging a more independent approach to using PHP frameworks, moving towards a more flexible and future-proof approach to PHP development.

Effective Application Security in Software Delivery lifecycle using Deployment Firewall and DBOM
The modern software delivery process (or the CI/CD process) includes many tools, distributed teams, open-source code, and cloud platforms. Constant focus on speed to release software to market, along with the traditional slow and manual security checks has caused gaps in continuous security as an important piece in the software supply chain. Today organizations feel more susceptible to external and internal cyber threats due to the vast attack surface in their applications supply chain and the lack of end-to-end governance and risk management.
The software team must secure its software delivery process to avoid vulnerability and security breaches. This needs to be achieved with existing tool chains and without extensive rework of the delivery processes. This talk will present strategies and techniques for providing visibility into the true risk of the existing vulnerabilities, preventing the introduction of security issues in the software, resolving vulnerabilities in production environments quickly, and capturing the deployment bill of materials (DBOM).
Speakers:
Bob Boule
Robert Boule is a technology enthusiast with PASSION for technology and making things work along with a knack for helping others understand how things work. He comes with around 20 years of solution engineering experience in application security, software continuous delivery, and SaaS platforms. He is known for his dynamic presentations in CI/CD and application security integrated in software delivery lifecycle.

Climate Impact of Software Testing at Nordic Testing DaysKari Kakkonen
My slides at Nordic Testing Days 6.6.2024
Climate impact / sustainability of software testing discussed on the talk. ICT and testing must carry their part of global responsibility to help with the climat warming. We can minimize the carbon footprint but we can also have a carbon handprint, a positive impact on the climate. Quality characteristics can be added with sustainability, and then measured continuously. Test environments can be used less, and in smaller scale and on demand. Test techniques can be used in optimizing or minimizing number of tests. Test automation can be used to speed up testing.

OpenAIRE: Europeana Cloud Model for
Sustainability
Julia Fallon
5th November 2013, Vilnius, Lithuania
2. The first phase of the work of Europeana (2008) focussed on making our heritage
available in a uniform, interoperable way. This meant a lot of effort establishing a
network and aggregation infrastructure; the ‘supply’ side.
Libraries
Archives
2
3. By 2010 we were able to start the second phase of the work, focussed on making the
metadata more accessible to individuals, professionals and creative industries across
Europe; the ‘demand’ side.
3
4. One of the most important changes was to make the metadata available under a more
open licensing structure: the CC0 Public Domain dedication for metadata.
4
4
5. Looking forward to the period after 2015, Europeana is positioned to become a true
‘Digital Service Infrastructure that services the Cultural Heritage Institutions in Europe
and several well defined markets.
5
5
6. So what are the challenges we are facing in this new context?
7
7. Users, both professionals and individuals, have indicated that they want more direct
access to content and overall a better user experience.
8
8. Data providers and Aggregators are also exploring what their role will be in the future.
9
9. To meet these challenges some of these issues we are developing a new infrastructure
called ‘Europeana Cloud’
10
10. We are still in the process of defining what it is, and what it should look like exactly...
11
12. But we have also identified 6 areas that require a lot
more work:
13
13. The most fundamental questions revolve around
content and storage: should the Europeana Cloud be
a place to physically store content, or rather provide
direct access to content- stored somewhere else?
And what is the desired path to submit that? Should
it follow the Europeana principles (i.e. EDM and
CC0)? Or will the cloud (also) contain other types of
material under different conditions? We have
developed a taskforce that will discuss 4 different
scenarios.
14
14. Scenario 1: metadata is provided through
aggregators to Europeana Cloud, the content stays
with the institutions.
15
15. Scenario 2: metadata is provided through
aggregators toEuropeana. The object content is
stored with the aggregators.
16
16. Scenario 3: metadata is provided through
aggregators to Europeana Cloud. The content is
provided directly to Europeana Cloud by the
Institutions.
17
17. Scenario 3: metadata and the content is provided
directly to Europeana Cloud by the Content
Providers.
