SR-IOV ixgbe Driver Limitations and ImprovementLF Events
SR-IOV is a device virtualization technology, it’s mainly used for improving network performance of virtual machines. However, SR-IOV has some limitations which come from hardware and/or driver implementation. For certain use case, such as Network Function Virtualization(NFV), those limitations are critical to provide services. Intel 10Gb NIC, Niantic(82599), has such limitations(e.g. VLAN filtering, multicast promiscuous) for NFV use case.
This presentation will show the limitations and issues and how they are being addressed, then explain how implements VF multicast promiscuous mode support in ixgbe driver and VF trust, iproute2 functionality enhancement.

While overall CPU usage is high at 97%, no single domain is fully utilized, indicating CPU is not the root cause of latency. It recommends investigating service level latency for specific LUNs, volumes, or protocols. Using ONTAP QoS commands, it identifies disk latency of 3ms on one aggregate which is within normal limits and not likely the root cause. The aggregate is 89% full which is also not yet concerning given its flash composition.

Netmap is a framework that allows applications to access network interface controller (NIC) hardware at near line-rate speeds. It reduces packet processing costs by eliminating system calls, memory copies between layers, and memory allocation/deallocation. Netmap provides applications with direct access to NIC buffers and rings via memory mapping, allowing packets to bypass the kernel for fast I/O. It also supports multi-queue NICs and provides rings for the host stack to still use the NIC while netmap applications have access.
