The Invisible Man is a science fiction novella by H. G. Wells. Originally serialized in Pearson's Weekly in 1897, it was published as a novel the same year. The Invisible Man of the title is Griffin, a scientist who has devoted himself to research into optics and invents a way to change a body's refractive index to that of air so that it neither absorbs nor reflects light and thus becomes invisible. He successfully carries out this procedure on himself, but fails in his attempt to reverse it.

2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
Ā
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasnāt one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

he was not guilty
Aouda
Young Indian woman, Aouda is
one of the characters created by
the French author Jules Verne
to star in his adventure novel
Around the World in 80 Days
8. Summary
The story begins in England. We are introduced to Fogg, a wealthy, solitary, unmarried
man with regular habits. The source of his wealth is not known and he lives modestly.
He fires his former butler, James Forster, for bringing him his shaving water two
degrees too cold. He hires as a replacement, Passepartout, a Frenchman of about 30.
9. Later that day in the Reform Club, he gets into a conversation with his fellow card players as
to whether it is possible to go around the world in eighty days. He believes it is possible and
is challenged to complete the adventure with a bet of 20,000 pounds. This is the beginning
of the entire plot and from then on we see how Fogg goes around the world and we witness
the amazing adventures that he has with his companions.
10. While disembarking in Egypt, he is watched by a Scotland Yard detective named Fix,
who has been despatched from London in search of a bank robber. Because Fogg
matches the description of the bank robber, Fix mistakenly believes Fogg to be the
criminal. Since he cannot secure a warrant in time, Fix goes on board the steamer to
Bombay. During the voyage, Fix gets acquainted with Passepartout, but does not
reveal his purpose for following them on the journey
11. Fix is a detective who believes Phileas Fogg is the bank robber and seems so
confident that he goes after him throughout the story and travel.
While Fogg and his butler know anything.
12. Finally Phileas Fogg is satisfied as he has kept his promise and traveled a lot with
Passepartout and on top of Aouda his wife.
On top of that they were super brave and overcame all obstacles.
13. The plot moves ahead with Fogg striving through various obstacles to reach London in time. He
goes through Brindisi, Suez, Bombay, Calcutta, Hong Kong, Yokohama, San Francisco, New
York and finally Liverpool. Fix arrests Fogg at Liverpool. Fogg is unable to arrive in London as
planned. He thinks that he has missed the deadline when in reality, he reached London a full day
earlier. Thus Fogg wins the wager and in the course of his travels, he finds himself a worthy,
charming and beautiful wife in Aouda too
14. Fog faces several obstacles.
The railway in Calcutta is
incomplete; he misses a boat
because he has not been
informed and in
America,outlaws attack his
train and take away his butler.
Fog is challenged to
go around the world
in eighty days; he
accepts the
challenge and
prepares to travel
with his butler and
twenty thousand
pounds.
Fogg is followed by Detective Fix who
thinks that Fogg is a bank robber and tries
to retain him in India to arrest him. He
does when they land in Liverpool . The
real robber is caught but Fog thinks he
has arrived in London five minutes late.
He is disappointed and goes back to his
residence
When making arrangements to
marry Aouda, Fogg gets to
know that he has indeed saved
time and arrives at the Reform
Club at precisely 8.45 p.m.
āHere I am, gentlemen!ā he
says and wins the bet.
Fogg has won the bet. Though
he had won the twenty
thousand pounds, since he had
spent some nineteen thousand
on the way, the proceeds were
small
Although Fogg
doesnāt gain much
from his winning, he
marries Aouda, a
charming woman
who makes him āthe
happiest of men
16. Remain true to oneās
course in life:
Fogg, together with
Passepartout and
Aouda have only one
mission ā that is to
reach London before
the eighty days are
over. However, when
they arrive, they think
they have missed the
bet by five minutes.
Fogg, although sad,
is able to accept the
fact that he has lost
not only the bet but
also his money. He is
a true gentleman.
MAIN THEMES
Perseverance and determination :
Phileas Fogg is a very
determined man who always puts
in great effort to anything he
does. Foggās determination leads
him to accept a bet to travel
around the world.
Throughout the novel, Fogg
shows his perseverance and
determination by finishing what
he has started and no matter how
difficult the obstacle is, he always
gave his best effort and
overcomes the difficulty.
Strong in mind and
spirit : Fogg is a
disciplined man,
always punctual and
very meticulous in his
manners and way of
life. This is his
strength and in his
travels he is always
able to come up with
correct decisions to
overcome the
obstacles he faces.
Generosity :
Fogg is very
generous and giving
throughout the
trip.When situations
arise, he is willing to
pay nearly anything
in order to
overcome the
obstacle and move
on. He
compensates more
than enough money
to a captain of a
boat so that they
can use the wood
as fuel for their trip.
17. MINOR THEMES
Genuine love overcomes obstacles:In the
book, the phrase `` genuine love overcomes
obstacles '' means that despite the
obstacles that Phileas Fogg and
Passepartout have, they support each other
and love each other unconditionally, and are
always together, they risk many things so
that the another is safe and nothing
happens to him, this is called genuine love
because whatever happens they will stay
together the entire trip
Time is precious:In the book the time is
precious because Fogg paid a lot of money
and he had a challenge and he had to go
around the world in 80 days, so he mustnāt
lose the time because he want to win the
challenge and all the time that he lost could
be gold and precious. All the travel he tried to
go faster and faster,so in this book the time is
precious. And Phileas Fogg was looking all
the time to his hand watch to control it.
18. VALUES
1.-Time is precious. This
value is in all the travel
around the world
because Phileas Fogg is
looking his hand watch
all the time to see how
much time he has to
complete his travel. Also
itās appear when Phileas
talked first time with
Passepartout, he just
arrived four minutes late.
These two situations or
examples show that time
is precious and very
important.
2.-Lifeās lessons must be
faced with patience and
strength.
An example is at the end of
last chapter when they
arrive five minutes late at
the agreed time, and
thinking that he has lost all
his money, he is saddened
and tells Mrs. Aouda that it
is better to live in poverty
with company and asks her
to marry him, thus facing
his poverty with strength
and patience, then he
discovers that he still has
time to win the bet, and
doesnāt lose his money.
3.-Challenges and
struggles in life are part
and parcel of oneās
existence in this world.
This value is given in the
book because Phileas
Fogg is constantly
having problems and
challenges that he want
to overcome, for
example, when he was
at the train and and the
sioux attacked him. And
he lost 2 days in sole
this problem.
4.-It is important to
share what little we
have with others.
One situation is when
Phileas Fogg and
Passepartout didnāt
know how to get to
Calcuta and Phileas
found a man with an
elephant and after a
short discussion
Phileas get the
elephant called Kiouni.
This mean that itās
important share with
others persons stuffs
like in this example an
elephant.
