3D Construction Challenge
My task was to make 3D shapes with marshmallows and toothpicks. I used toothpicks
to represent edges and marshmallows to represent vertices.
Based on the clues given, I solved the problems by creating the following models:
Cube, which had 6 faces, 12 edges and 8 vertices
Square pyramid, which had 5 faces, 8 edges and 5 vertices
Pentagonal pyramid, which had 7 faces, 15 edges and 10 vertices
Hexagonal pyramid, which had 7 faces, 10 edges and 6 vertices
It was fun to make shapes with toothpicks and marshmallows, because I like
marshmallows and making shapes. It was challenging to think of the shape that had
that many vertices and edges, because we should think of the shapes in the head and
count the vertices and edges. This task made me think about solving problems by using
3D shapes and logic.During this task, I learned more about edges and vertices.
I still have questions about other kinds of shapes. Next, I would like to investigate other
kinds of 3D shapes, such as dodecahedron and icosahedron.
