The self talk cycle
Your thoughts
about yourself
Your emotions
Your behaviour
People’s reactions
to your behaviour
Short circuiting the self talk cycle
Stop it short
 Catch yourself when you are
saying negative things to
yourself
 Tell yourself, “Stop!” or use a
signal to remind yourself,
such as clicking your fingers
 Erase the thought
Replace it
 Replace the negative
thought with a positive one
 If another person’s
behaviour is concerning you,
think of possible alternative
explanations for it
 Distract yourself with
another activity
Check it out
If the thought keeps returning, find out if it is
true:
 Ask for feedback, or:
 Ask the person whose behaviour is
worrying you what is concerning them, or:
 Look for evidence to support or refute your
thought
