The Non-Invasive Data Governance FrameworkDATAVERSITY
Data Governance is already taking place in your organization. The actions of defining, producing and using data are not new. People in your organization have, at a minimum, an informal level of accountability for the data they use. The Non-Invasive Data Governance framework provides a method to formalize accountability based on people’s existing responsibilities.
Join Bob Seiner for this month’s installment of his Real-World Data Governance webinar series where he will provide a detailed framework for how to implement a Non-Invasive Data Governance program. This hour will be spent walking through the five most important components of a successful program described from the perspectives of the executive, strategic, tactical and operational levels of your organization.
In the webinar Bob will share:
The graphic for the Non-Invasive Data Governance Framework
A detailed description of the core program components
The importance of viewing the components from different perspectives
A detailed walk-through of each segment of the framework
How to use the framework to implement a successful program
Data Leadership: How to Beat the Odds in 2016Robyn Bollhorst
Leading analyst firms often cite the success rate of data projects at less than 50%. The problem requires a human solution, not a technical one. Strong leadership at every level is the key to beating the odds. In this session, First Sergeant Matt Eversmann (ret.), recipient of the Bronze Star Medal, memorialized in the epic film Black Hawk Down, and the co-author of The Battle of Mogadishu, will discuss the challenge of leading a team that aligns the needs of the business & their IT counterparts. Critical skills like “leading from the middle” and the value of leadership and followership are outlined to create a lasting atmosphere of success in cross-functional data governance teams.
Multi-Tenancy in Data Lakes are on the rise. When looking at multi-tenancy from the lens of data governance, a lot is changing the landscape, and the way we have been operating with respect to the governance model probably needs a rethink. It is time to think of Governance and its various entities as a first-class citizen in data architecture and bake it as part of the platform. We will look at the various aspects of governance, extending to accommodate the growing compliance and regulatory requirements and suggestive architectural approaches to realize the same.

The Data Management challenges each organization faces are unique in their priority and severity. Therefore the structure and composition of a Data Organization is one of the major success factors for establishing a successful and sustainable data program. In this presentation, we will review the developmental stages of a data organization, the models and the choices for establishing the right structure to the organization in addition to the process for selecting the team members that will produce high-performance business results.
DAMA Webinar: What Does "Manage Data Assets" Really Mean?DATAVERSITY
For nearly a generation, managers have exhorted their organizations to “manage data as business assets.” But relatively little has happened, perhaps because the logical follow-up question, “what exactly should we do differently?” goes unanswered.
This presentation answers that question. It makes three mutually-reinforcing “prescriptions” and shows how leading companies follow them. Specifically:
1.Take care of the data: Focus on the data with the greatest market potential and improve by at least an order of magnitude.
2.Put the data to work. Use them to make data-driven decisions, to enhance existing products and services, and to find and exploit previously-hidden insights (e.g., analytics and big data).
3.Advance the management system. Today’s organizations can only be described as “unfit for data.” Getting the right people in the right jobs and having all who touch data contribute is essential.
Designed to address more mature programs, this tutorial covers the issues and approaches to sustaining Data Governance and value creation over time, amongst a changing business and personnel environment.
Part of the reason many companies launch a Data Governance program again and again is that over time, it is challenging to maintain the enthusiasm and excitement that accompanies a newly initiated program.
Learn about:
• Typical obstacles to sustainable Data Governance
• Re-energizing your program after a key player (or two) leave and other personnel challenges
• Staying relevant to the company as the business evolves over time
• Understanding the role of metrics and why they are critical
• Leveraging Communication and Stakeholder Management practices to maintain commitment
• Embedding Data Governance into the operations of the company
Join CCG for our Data Governance (DG) Workshop where CCG will introduce their Data Governance methodology and framework that enables organizations to assess DG faster, deriving actionable insights that can be quickly implemented with minimal disruption. Data Privacy in the DMBOK - No Need to Reinvent the WheelDATAVERSITY
World wide, Data Privacy laws are increasing. Customers are increasingly aware, and concerned, about how data is processed. The Chief Privacy Officer is (or should be) a key stakeholder for many Data Governance initiatives, and new terms like “Privacy by Design” and “Privacy Engineering” are entering our conversations with peers. Non-EU organizations selling into the EU will soon have to comply with EU Data Privacy laws. However, data professionals who take a structured, principles based approach, to building their Data Privacy capabilities stand a better chance of sustainable success than those who don’t. Rather than reinventing the wheel, organizations should look at how the DMBOK framework, in conjunction with other approaches and methods, can provide a robust platform for Data Privacy initiatives in their organizations.

How to Implement Data Governance Best PracticeDATAVERSITY
Data Governance Best Practice is defined as basis and guidelines for suggested governing activities. Organizations define best practices to be used as a point of comparison when determining their readiness, willingness and actions necessary to put a Data Governance program in place. But what are the best practices and how can they be implemented? This webinar will address these questions and more.
In this RWDG webinar, Bob Seiner will talk about how to create, validate, assess and implement Data Governance Best Practice with immediate impact on present and future Data Governance activities. The result of a Best Practice assessment is a thorough actionable plan focused on demonstrating value from your Data Governance program. This webinar will cover:

• How to Assess against Best Practice to Build Program Success
• Examples of Industry Selected DG Best Practice
• How to Communicate DG Best Practice in a Non-Threatening Way
• How to Build DG Best Practice into Daily Operations
RWDG Webinar: Data Steward Definition and Other Data Governance RolesDATAVERSITY
The role of the Data Steward is critical to the success of a Data Governance program. There are several approaches to Stewardship including assigning people to be Data Stewards, identify existing Data Stewards and recognizing Data Stewards according to their relationship to the data they define, produce and use. However Stewards are only one of several Data Governance roles that must be considered.
In this month’s RWDG webinar, Bob Seiner will discuss several approaches to defining the role of the Data Steward as well as the other roles necessary for Data Governance program success. Data Governance roles must include operational, tactical, strategic and supporting levels of responsibilities. Spend an hour with Bob where he will share a customize-able Operating Model of Data Governance roles and responsibilities.
In this webinar, Bob will discuss:
• Several approaches to defining Data Stewards and Stewardship
• How to select the Stewardship approach that is right for you
• Different levels of Stewards required for a successful program
• An Operating Model of DG Roles that can be molded to fit in any culture
• Why the approach to defining DG roles can make or break the program
Real-World Data Governance: Governing Customer Data – Is There a Difference?DATAVERSITY
Many organizations select a specific domain or subject area of data to focus on as they kick off their data governance initiative. More often than not, it seems that subject area is Customer data. It is common practice these days for organizations to become customer-centric through being data-centric. Perhaps that is the case with your organization.
Real-World Data Governance: Governance Risk and ComplianceDATAVERSITY
The target of many a Data Governance Program is to nail their regulatory and compliance requirements first to appease the government and industry regulators before doing anything else. Risk Management, as a practice, is already in place in most organizations under a variety of names. Even though most organizations do not consider Risk Management the same thing as Data Governance, the similarities abound. Compliance is not optional. Nothing about Regulatory and Compliance mentions optional. Governance is not optional either.
The session will cover:
Risk Management Vs. Data Governance – A Close Comparison
Risk Management as the Face of Data Governance
Measuring Success of Governance in terms of Risk Management
Using Risk and Compliance to Explain Governance
Using “Not Optional” as Your Crutch

DataEd Slides: Unlock Business Value Using Reference and Master Data Manageme...DATAVERSITY
Data tends to pile up and can be rendered unusable or obsolete without careful maintenance processes. Reference and Master Data Management (MDM) has been a popular Data Management approach to effectively gain mastery over not just the data but the supporting architecture for processing it from a master/transaction perspective. This webinar presents MDM as a strategic approach to improving and formalizing practices around those data items that provide context for organizational transactions – its master data. Too often, MDM has been implemented technology-first and achieved the same very poor track record (1/3 succeeding on-time, within budget, achieving planned functionality). MDM success depends on a coordinated approach involving typically Data Governance and Data Quality activities. Program learning objectives include:
• Understanding foundational reference and MDM concepts
• Why they are an important component of your Data Architecture
• Awareness of Reference and MDM Frameworks and building blocks
• What consists of MDM guiding principles and best practices
• How to utilize Reference and MDM in support of business strategy

With recent studies indicating that 80% of AI and machine learning projects are failing due to data quality related issues, it’s critical to think holistically about this fact. This is not a simple topic – issues in data quality can occur throughout from starting the project through to model implementation and usage.
View this webinar on-demand, where we start with four foundational data steps to get our AI and ML projects grounded and underway, specifically:
• Framing the business problem
• Identifying the “right” data to collect and work with
• Establishing baselines of data quality through data profiling and business rules
• Assessing fitness for purpose for training and evaluating the subsequent models and algorithms

Data-Ed Online: Trends in Data ModelingDATAVERSITY
Businesses cannot compete without data. Every organization produces and consumes it. Data trends are hitting the mainstream and businesses are adopting buzzwords such as Big Data, data vault, data scientist, etc., to seek solutions for their fundamental data issues. Few realize that the importance of any solution, regardless of platform or technology, relies on the data model supporting it. Data modeling is not an optional task for an organization’s data remediation effort. Instead, it is a vital activity that supports the solution driving your business.
This webinar will address emerging trends around data model application methodology, as well as trends around the practice of data modeling itself. We will discuss abstract models and entity frameworks, as well as the general shift from data modeling being segmented to becoming more integrated with business practices.

The Missing Link in Enterprise Data Governance - Automated Metadata ManagementDATAVERSITY
So many companies and organizations are in the same boat. They’re drowning in their data — so much data, from so many different sources. They understand that data governance is hugely important for them to be able to know their data inside and out and comply with regulations. What many companies have not yet come to terms with when implementing their data governance strategy and supporting tools, is the criticality of metadata in the process. As the ‘data about data,’ metadata provides the value and purpose of the data content, thereby becoming an extremely effective tool for quickly locating information – a must for BI groups dealing with analytics and business user reporting.
Octopai's CEO, Amnon Drori will discuss this critical missing link in enterprise data governance and the impact of automating metadata management for data discovery and data lineage for BI. He'll demonstrate how BI groups use Octopai to not only locate their data instantly, but to quickly and accurately visualize and understand the entire data journey to enable the business to move forward.
Lessons in Data Modeling: Why a Data Model is an Important Part of Your Data ...DATAVERSITY
Data can provide tremendous value to an organization in today’s information-driven economy. New customer insights, better efficiency, and new product innovation are just some of the ways organizations are obtaining value through data. But in order to achieve this value, a strong data architecture is required to ensure that the data infrastructure runs smoothly, while at the same time aligning with business needs and corporate culture. A Data Strategy can assist in building a data architecture foundation through:
Identifying business requirements, rules & definitions via a business-centric data model
Creating a data inventory & integrating disparate data sources
Building a technical data architecture through data models & related artifacts
Coordinating the people, processes and culture necessary for success
Identifying tools & technology needed for creating & maintaining high quality data

Enterprise Excellence is Inclusive Excellence.pdfKaiNexus
Enterprise excellence and inclusive excellence are closely linked, and real-world challenges have shown that both are essential to the success of any organization. To achieve enterprise excellence, organizations must focus on improving their operations and processes while creating an inclusive environment that engages everyone. In this interactive session, the facilitator will highlight commonly established business practices and how they limit our ability to engage everyone every day. More importantly, though, participants will likely gain increased awareness of what we can do differently to maximize enterprise excellence through deliberate inclusion.
What is Enterprise Excellence?
Enterprise Excellence is a holistic approach that's aimed at achieving world-class performance across all aspects of the organization.
What might I learn?
A way to engage all in creating Inclusive Excellence. Lessons from the US military and their parallels to the story of Harry Potter. How belt systems and CI teams can destroy inclusive practices. How leadership language invites people to the party. There are three things leaders can do to engage everyone every day: maximizing psychological safety to create environments where folks learn, contribute, and challenge the status quo.
Who might benefit? Anyone and everyone leading folks from the shop floor to top floor.

The “Likeability” crisis for data means that data quality and

According to a Harvard Business School study from 2005, everyone in this room falls into one of the boxes above. We fit on a scale of Competence and Likeability.
It would be spectacular if we could all be in the Lovable Star box, but unfortunately that can’t always be the case.
More alarming is that when we are given the opportunity to choose our team mates, we are statistically more likely to pick the Lovable Fool than the Competent Jerk. Often using the excuse of “Alignment”.
Put this in the terms of Data and Information Management and it can be hard to recognize and reach out to either business or IT to select the right talent for success.
