Far Cry 3 continues the popular franchise as the third game. Released in November 2012, it is set on a tropical island where the protagonist Jason Brody must save his friends who were captured by pirates and escape the dangerous island. The game was a major commercial success, selling over 10 million copies in under a year. While reviews praised the open world design and story, the multiplayer mode received criticism. Overall ratings were positive, with a 9/10 from IGN and 10/10 from Eurogamer.

2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

A Strategic Approach: GenAI in EducationPeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.
2. Interview: with a fan of the game – questions
1. What do you enjoy about the games the most?
2. Which is the best Far Cry and why?
3. What do you hope for the next Far Cry?
4. How often do you play Far Cry, do you think this is too much or too little?
5. What is your overall opinion on the Far Cry series?
6. Do you think there is enough gameplay before completion in the games?
7. What improvements do you think there should be in any of the games?
8. How long have you been playing Far Cry for, when was the first time you played?
9. How would you rate the Far Cry series compared to Assassin’s Creed series? As they are made by the same
developers?
10. Do you think there are too many cut scenes in Far Cry 5 and what is your opinion on this? As there are a lot more
compared to the other Far Cry games.
3. Interview: with a fan of the game – answers from Fraser Coffey
1. That’s it’s a wide open world game where I can do whatever I want out of the many possibilities available in the
game, for example hunting different animals, such as deer, eagles, elks and fish.
2. Far cry 3 because I believe that the story was very good, with interesting and unexpected twists and I liked the style
of play, however the graphics in far cry primal and far cry 5 are the best as these two games are the most recent
ones.
3. To be a big step up from the last game, with a better story (more twists and more important characters), better
graphics (even though primal and 5 are good, there is always room for improvements).
4. I play far cry whenever I feel like I would need some free time to relax, as it is a nice free-flowing game, and I
usually play 2-3 times a week for a few hours each time and in my opinion I don’t think I play enough but I would
like to play more often, if I had the time.
5. The first two games were good at the time, however the story and graphics were very average after playing more
recent ones, such as primal, due to the time it was made in. After playing 3 I was hooked and after 4, 5 and primal I
believe it is one of the best franchises in the gaming industry.
6. Of course. There are so many unique things that you can do other than the main story, for example exploring the
world and completing minor challenges (such as liberating hostages captured by the other cults/tribes).
7. I feel like the multiplayer system could be improved so you could share those experiences with friends, for example
co-op survival in an open world (just like the single player world).
8. I’ve been playing for at least six years and I am still enjoying the game, it never gets old.
9. Personally I would say that Far Cry is on a different level compared to other Ubisoft games, with the style of
gameplay and graphics, which is why it’s so popular.
10. I think that there were a lot of cut scenes but you don’t really notice, as the cut scenes are a chance to see the
graphics in such detail, making it a extraordinary game.

Far Cry 2
Far cry 2 is the next game of the franchise and unlike the first
one, this was developed and publish by Ubisoft, after Ubisoft
got full rights to the franchise after the first. Released in
October 2008, meaning it took over 4 years for the game to be
created.
Far cry 2 takes place in a small, failed central African state, in
the middle of a civil war. The player takes control of a
mercenary on a lengthy and difficult journey to locate and
assassinate ‘the Jackal’, a notorious arms dealer, needing to be
taken down.
This game exceeded expectation upon its release, selling 3
million copies after 3 months, breaking records. This game
was appreciated a lot more than the first due to the many
improvements that were made. For example the freedom of
exploring an open-world gameplay, in terrains such as deserts,
jungles and savannas. However there was some criticism
directed at glitches design choices and the writing in the story,
although as a whole this game was considered a big success,
being rated by different professional gaming review sites.
Gamestop rated the game 8.5/10, Trusted Reviews rated it
8/10 and Metacritic rated it 8.5/10.

Far Cry 4 was the next game in the fan’s favourite franchise,
being the first of the collection to be released originally for the
next gen consoles (Xbox One and PS4). Only taking 2 years to
be released after the previous game in the installments Far Cry
4 was released in November 2014, pleasing the Far Cry fans,
as they didn’t have to wait as long for number 4.
Taking place in Kyrat, a fictional Himilayan country, the story
follows a young Kyrati-American, Ajay Ghale, as he is trapped
in the middle of a civil war, involving Kyrat’s Royal Army,
controlled by tyrannical king Pagan Min, and a rebel
movement called the Golden Path. Ghale fights against Pagan
Min the skillful leader, however encounters many obstacles on
the way.
The game was met with a mostly positive response, as people
were pleased with the open world design, visuals, soundtracks
and particularly antagonist Pagan Min, however some critics
claimed the game was too similar to the previous game (Far
Cry 3). In under 2 months Ubisoft sold 7 million copies and
was the biggest launch in the franchise’s history. Once again
the game was rated highly by popular critics sites, as Trusted
Reviews rated the game 8/10, IGN.com rated the game 8.5/10
and Metacritic also rated the game 8.5/10.

Next to be released was Far Cry Primal, a spiritual predecessor
of the main Far Cry series. It is the first game out of the Far Cry
installments to be set in the Mesolithic age.
The story revolves around a caveman, Takkar, who begins as
an unarmed and unskilled hunter, who progresses to become
the ‘Wenja’ tribe leader, in the setting of the fictional Oros.
The hunter goes through many difficulties, learning new skills
and crafting new weapons etc. the player can use as they
progress through the game.
This game was very controversial to players and fans of the Far
Cry franchise, as many praised the concept and setting, as well
as the animal-taming technique and world design, however
some reviewers felt there was a lack of weapons for the player
to use and have fun with, leading to repetitive gameplay, while
others felt the game wasn’t on par with the previous Far Cry
games, however this can be viewed positively or negatively
depending on your enjoyment of the setting the game was in
(10,000 BC). Contrasting to the criticism this game caused, it
still received high scores from popular critical gaming sites,
with a 9/10 from Trusted Reviews, 7.6/10 from Metacritic and
8/10 from Gamespot.

Far Cry 5
Finally, Far Cry 5, the most recent and most popular
installment of the franchise, was released in March 2018,
becoming a major success, grossing over $310 million in its
first week of sales.
Set in Hope County, a fictional region in Montana. The story
revolves around the Project and Eden’s Gate, a doomsday cult
that rules the land under a twisted leader, Joseph Seed. The
player controls a junior deputy sheriff who is trapped in Hope
County and works alongside a much weaker resistance to
liberate the county and take down Seed.
Due to the detailed and advanced design and mechanics in the
open world gameplay, Far Cry 5 was heavily praised, however
was criticized for being the subject of controversy, after being
announced alongside a time of important political conflicts in
America, such as the election of Donald Trump. This was seen
as controversy because the game involves leaders who follow
views seen as ‘far-right’ political views, which many say
were/are Donald Trump’s views.
IGN.com rated the game a high 8.9/10, Trusted Reviews rated
the game 8/10 and lastly Metacritic rated the game 8.1/10,
which weren’t the highest ratings out of all the Far Cry games,
however was seen as the biggest success by many (mainly due
to sales and advanced designs).

An Interview with a Far Cry Fan part 1
To connect with Far Cry’s audience I reached out to a big fan of the series,
Fraser Coffey, to ask him a few questions about the franchise, to get this
thoughts and opinions overall.
Fraser said that the aspect of the games he enjoys the most is the fact that
they are wide, open-world games where he can do whatever wants within
them out of the main possibilities available, for example hunting different
animals, such as deer, eagles, elks and fish.
He stated that Far Cry 3 was his favourite game out of the franchise
because the story was very good, with interesting and unexpected twists
and he liked the style of gameplay, however the graphics in Far Cry Primal
and Far Cry 5 are the best as these two games are the most recent,
therefore created with the use of more advanced technology. This view
from the fan is also a very similar view from the professional critics and
players I researched and displayed on page 4 “Far Cry 3”.
For the next Far Cry (if there is one) Fraser hopes for a big step up from
number 5, with a better story (more twists and more important
characters), better graphics- which is likely to happen due to the
progression of technology- even though number 5 and Primal are quite
advanced, there are always room for improvements. These views are quite
controversial as many reviews state they enjoyed the story and graphics in
Far Cry 5, however these are just the views from a fan.
The fan continues as he describes the amount of time he plays any of the
Far Cry games on a regular basis, as he says he plays whenever he feels like
he would need some free time to relax, as the games are well designed,
free-flowing games, and he usually plays 2-3 times a week, for a few hours
each time and in his opinion he doesn’t think he plays enough but would
like to more often, if he had the time.
When asked about his overall opinion on the series he says he thinks the
first two games were good at the time, however the story and graphics
were very average after playing more recent ones, such as primal, due to
the time it was made in. After playing 3 I was hooked and after 4, 5 and
primal I believe it is one of the best franchises in the gaming industry.

He stated that Far Cry 3 was his
favourite game out of the franchise because the story was very good, with
interesting and unexpected twists and he liked the style of gameplay,
however the graphics in Far Cry Primal and Far Cry 5 are the best as these
two games are the most recent, therefore created with the use of more
advanced technology. This view from the fan is also a very similar view
from the professional critics and players I researched and displayed on
page 4 “Far Cry 3”. For the next Far Cry (if there is one) Fraser hopes for a
big step up from number 5, with a better story (more twists and more
important characters), better graphics- which is likely to happen due to the
progression of technology- even though number 5 and Primal are quite
advanced, there are always room for improvements. These views are quite

1. That’s it’s a wide open world game where I can do whatever I want
out of the many possibilities available in the game, for example
hunting different animals, such as deer, eagles, elks and fish.
2. Far cry 3 because I believe that the story was very good, with
interesting and unexpected twists and I liked the style of play,
however the graphics in far cry primal and far cry 5 are the best as
these two games are the most recent ones.
3. To be a big step up from the last game, with a better story (more
twists and more important characters), better graphics (even
though primal and 5 are good, there is always room for
improvements).
4. I play far cry whenever I feel like I would need some free time to
relax, as it is a nice free-flowing game, and I usually play 2-3 times a
week for a few hours each time and in my opinion I don’t think I play
enough but I would like to play more often, if I had the time.
5. The first two games were good at the time, however the story and

and after 4, 5 and primal I believe it is one of the best franchises in

6. Of course. There are so many unique things that you can do other
than the main story, for example exploring the world and
completing minor challenges (such as liberating hostages captured
by the other cults/tribes).
7. I feel like the multiplayer system could be improved so you could
share those experiences with friends, for example co-op survival in
an open world (just like the single player world).
8. I’ve been playing for at least six years and I am still enjoying the
game, it never gets old.
9. Personally I would say that Far Cry is on a different level compared
to other Ubisoft games, with the style of gameplay and graphics,
which is why it’s so popular.
10. I think that there were a lot of cut scenes but you don’t really
notice, as the cut scenes are a chance to see the graphics in such
detail, making it a extraordinary game.

Fraser thinks that there is definitely enough gameplay before
completion in the games, as he says, of course, there are so many
unique things that you can do other than the main story, for
example exploring the world and completing minor challenges (such
as liberating hostages captured by the other cults/tribes or hunting
for different animals).
As an improvement to the games the Far Cry fan describes how the
multiplayer system could be improved so you could share the
experiences with friends, for example co-op survival in an open
world, where you could progress with missions etc. (just like single
player), as this would improve his view on the series massively.
After beginning with Far Cry 3, six years ago, Fraser was hooked on
the franchise resulting in him going back to play number 1 and 2,
and continuously playing the recent games of the main series as
they come out, for example Far Cry 5, as it came out this year
(2018). It never gets old he stated.
He was asked how he rates the franchise compared to the
Assassin’s Creed series made by the same developers and he
proceeded with saying he thinks Far Cry is on a different level
compared to other Ubisoft games, with the style of gameplay and
graphics, which is why it’s so popular.
Finally Fraser gives his opinion on Far Cry 5’s amount of cut scenes
in relation to gameplay and he states that there were a lot of cut
scenes but you don’t really notice, as the cut scenes give you a
chance to see the graphics in such detail, making it an extraordinary
game.
