This academic article examines the problems and prospects of investigative journalism in Rivers State, Nigeria. It analyzes data collected from journalists at The Tide and Hard Truth newspapers through questionnaires and interviews. The findings show that while investigative journalism is practiced in Rivers State, the level of practice is low due to challenges like fear of death, poor remuneration, and influence from newspaper owners. However, there are prospects for improved practice with the signing of Nigeria's Freedom of Information Act in 2011. The article recommends a proactive approach to investigative journalism while taking advantage of opportunities under the FOI Act.
The Louisiana Academy of Family Physicians (LAFP) organized a legislative advocacy campaign in response to scope of practice bills threatening family physicians. The campaign included legislative breakfast meetings across the state to educate legislators, a training seminar to prepare members, and a health fair at the state capitol. The LAFP introduced a bill strengthening oversight of nurse practitioners and entered negotiations with nursing groups. Through increased member involvement and education on the legislative process, the LAFP successfully advocated for family medicine and defeated most scope of practice bills.
