2. Interests and Achievements:
Hockey - First XI player for Banbridge town
Burney and McCullough Cup winner with Banbridge Academy
Captain of RDS squad
I have also had the opportunity to play for the full Ulster U21 squad
Duke of Edinburgh Silver award – I was team leader and am currently completing my
Gold award
Travel – In the summer of 2007 I had the opportunity to travel to South Africa on
hockey tour. This gave me a passion for travel and have since visited several
countries including Holland, Belgium, France, Italy and Bulgaria.
Throughout my time at University of Ulster my strong leadership and communication skills
have been developed in projects set by University. Others look to me naturally as team
leader and I have been able to communicate effectively with my team to complete projects
successfully, most notably when we were tasked last year with looking at a local company’s
recruitment policy and suggesting changes that would enable them to hire and keep an
electrical engineer. The Director of the company complimented my group on how we were
able to think outside the box and was keen to implement some of our findings. My lecturer
also praised the amount of input I had in particular in carrying out and writing up the
project.
I can also work independently and at the minute am carrying out a marketing task on my
own with Belfast Telegraph. My role is to carry out a SWOT analysis of Belfast Telegraph
Travel and deliver a presentation to my lecturers and manager of Belfast Telegraph. I also
have to conduct a PESTEL analysis of the launch of the brand along with a customer survey
to compare and contrast previous package holidays to the new brand. This project has
highlighted to me that I have a strong interest in marketing as I very much enjoyed
completing the task.
Personal Qualities: I am an out-going, sociable person who enjoys being part of a team, but
who can also work independently. I am also honest and dependable. I am always willing to
learn and take advice and have been recommended by my University tutors for taking the
initiative in group situations and showing enthusiasm for tasks that have been set. They
have also commended me on my management and selling techniques.
Previous work experience: Before starting my degree I spent a work placement with BT. I
loved the idea of being part of a large company and enjoyed listening in to live sales. I saw
how important it was to positively influence the performance of employees within an
organisation and how good leadership was essential within the department. The importance
of working effectively with line managers so as targets could be reached and all projects
were cost effective was also highlighted.
