3. Examples of activities that can be smart
Smart Transport: traffic management, smart cards, signal control systems, parking system.
Smart Water and Energy: Regulate supplies of energy and water demands and uses.
Smart Healthcare: For instance, smart sensors can detect air or water pollution before they
turn into a public health risk. Sensors can also gather data from medical facilities and detect
the spread of diseases.

4. How Does a City Become Smart?
Technological Layer: A huge number of sensors and connected devices used to
provide a wide range of services.
Dedicated Applications Layer: IS used by city officials and citizens to improve city
operations.
Application Usage Layer: Implementation and usage of the IS by designated users.

5. Technological Layer:
Internet of Things (IoT): Sensors and internet-connected devices can communicate with
each other and send data to management systems. Sensors can collect different types of
data.
Information and Communication Technology (ICT): This platform is used to enable
communication between citizens.

7. What is Big Data
• Data that contains greater variety, arriving in increasing volumes and with more
velocity.
• Big data solutions provide administrative controls for large amounts of data, including
storage, backups, analysis, and visualization.
• Also enable the use of advanced capabilities in smart cities. This includes Internet of
Things (IoT) technology, smart sensors, smart transport, and more.

9. How Big Data Impacts Smart Cities
• Public Safety.
• Transportation. Control traffic congestion for example.
• Cost Reduction. Cities can make dedicated investments for
required areas.
• Sustainable Growth. Data plays a key role in determining the
outcomes of development in a smart city.

10. Where data can be stored
• Cloud Storage. Data centers with sophisticated data analysis (trust,
security !!!).
• Edge Computing. Edge computing enables you to process data close to the
source. Can be cheaper than streaming data to a remote storage location, and
may be safer.
• Hybrid Data Storage. Hybrid data storage systems combine the benefits of
cloud and edge storage

11. What is Big Data Security?
• Big data security is an umbrella term that includes all security measures and tools
applied to analytics and data processes: information theft, DDoS attacks, ransomware,
or other malicious activities.
• The consequences of information theft can be even worse when organizations store
sensitive or confidential information like credit card numbers or customer
information. They may face fines!!!

12. Addressing Big Data Security Threats
Security tools for data are not new. They simply have more scalability and the
ability to secure unstructured data.

13. Addressing Big Data Security Threats
• Encryption
• Big data encryption tools need to secure data-at-rest and in-transit across large data volumes.
• We need also encrypt both user and machine-generated data.
• Encryption tools have to operate on multiple big data storage formats (unstructured data or
NoSQL databases) and distributed file systems ( for example Hadoop or Spark).

14. Addressing Big Data Security Threats
• User Access Control
User access control is a basic network security tool.
A robust user control policy has to be based on automated role-based settings and
policies.

15. Addressing Big Data Security Threats
• Intrusion Detection and Prevention
Intrusion Prevention System (IPS) often sits directly behind the firewall and
isolates the intrusion before it does actual damage.

16. Addressing Big Data Security Threats
• Centralized Key Management
• Key management is the process of protecting cryptographic keys from loss or
misuse.
• Centralized key management offers more efficiency as opposed to distributed
or application-specific management.
• A reliable key management system is essential for companies handling
sensitive information.
