1) Land plants evolved from green algae called charophyceans around 475 million years ago. They developed key adaptations like walled spores and alternation of generations that allowed them to survive on land.
2) Early land plants were bryophytes like mosses and liverworts that lacked vascular tissue. Around 420 million years ago, the first vascular plants evolved, eventually forming the first forests during the Carboniferous period.
3) Vascular plants have a life cycle dominated by the sporophyte generation. They developed tissues like xylem and phloem for transport. Roots and leaves evolved to help them absorb water/nutrients and capture sunlight more efficiently.
