Scaling up integrated community based nutrition in Thailand2020 Conference
Malnutrition must be addressed beyond just health issues through advocacy and national development plans that integrate nutrition priorities. Early implementation of Thailand's national nutrition plan faced coordination challenges between sectors due to rigid government structures and resource allocation. Integrating nutrition into broader social and health development plans, spearheaded by a Poverty Alleviation Plan, helped scale up nutrition programs. Community health volunteers were trained to conduct growth monitoring and promotion activities, and marked improvements in child malnutrition were seen within 5 years.
The document proposes the Health and Economic Convergence Platform, a partnership between McGill University and The INCLEN Trust International to harness business and economics for sustainable health and wealth. The program carries out interdisciplinary research in Northern Thailand and Northern Vietnam with the goals of establishing sustainable land use and agricultural systems, improving research methods for complex mountainous environments, and developing policy measures to address rural poverty and food insecurity. A key concept is the integration of different knowledge domains like biophysical, economic, and stakeholder knowledge to understand the system and build scenarios to support sustainable innovations.
This document discusses measuring and predicting aflatoxin risk in crops under climate variability and change. Aflatoxins are toxic molds that contaminate crops in tropical regions, causing health issues. The study will (1) assess current aflatoxin levels in crops and blood in Senegal, (2) adapt a crop model to project pre- and post-harvest risk under weather scenarios, (3) develop risk assessments combining weather forecasts and the model, and (4) test management strategies to reduce contamination. The research aims to provide seasonal forecasts of aflatoxin for monitoring and mitigation in West Africa under current and future climate conditions.
Coping food price hikes: Strategies of the poor in Sri Lanka2020 Conference
The document summarizes a study on coping strategies adopted by poor households in Kandy district, Sri Lanka during times of food price hikes. The study found that households primarily cope by engaging in multiple income sources, increased reliance on credit, borrowing from informal sources, and support from friends/family. They also cut non-food spending, ate less frequently and in smaller portions, and substituted cheaper local foods. The choice of strategy depended on the household resources and external environment. While hunger was not widespread, some coping strategies like substituting and reducing food intake likely deteriorated nutritional status. The document recommends policies account for differences between rural, urban and estate communities and focus on staple foods like rice and wheat that experienced price fluctuations.
The TELFUN project was an interdisciplinary research project from 2007-2012 at Wageningen University that combined plant breeding, food technology, nutrition and social sciences to link the production of local food crops to the nutrition of resource-poor communities using local processing techniques in order to stimulate food sovereignty.
Undernutrition during a child's first 1,000 days (from conception to age 2) can lead to lifelong health and developmental problems. Each year, 3.5 million children under 5 die due to undernutrition-related causes. Fortunately, proven and cost-effective interventions exist such as educating mothers, fortifying foods, and providing supplements during this crucial window. The Scaling Up Nutrition (SUN) initiative aims to implement these solutions on a large scale in developing countries and build a global movement to combat undernutrition and keep it a priority issue.
Integrated post harvest management for improving nutrition and health2020 Conference
Integrated post harvest management (IPHM) aims to utilize 100% of agricultural production. IPHM techniques can be adopted for many fruits and vegetables. As a case study, cauliflower leaves - typically unutilized - can be removed after harvest. The leaves contain substantial beta-carotene and can be processed into a powder to fortify foods and combat vitamin A deficiency. Establishing Integrated Post Harvest Management Centers (IPHMCs) could help reduce post-harvest losses and global hunger through optimized utilization of agricultural outputs.
The North-West University in South Africa has two initiatives to link food and agricultural research in Africa: BIODIVERSITY and SUNRAY. THE SACRIFICE HOW PRO-PALESTINE PROTESTS STUDENTS ARE SACRIFICING TO CHANGE T...indexPub
The recent surge in pro-Palestine student activism has prompted significant responses from universities, ranging from negotiations and divestment commitments to increased transparency about investments in companies supporting the war on Gaza. This activism has led to the cessation of student encampments but also highlighted the substantial sacrifices made by students, including academic disruptions and personal risks. The primary drivers of these protests are poor university administration, lack of transparency, and inadequate communication between officials and students. This study examines the profound emotional, psychological, and professional impacts on students engaged in pro-Palestine protests, focusing on Generation Z's (Gen-Z) activism dynamics. This paper explores the significant sacrifices made by these students and even the professors supporting the pro-Palestine movement, with a focus on recent global movements. Through an in-depth analysis of printed and electronic media, the study examines the impacts of these sacrifices on the academic and personal lives of those involved. The paper highlights examples from various universities, demonstrating student activism's long-term and short-term effects, including disciplinary actions, social backlash, and career implications. The researchers also explore the broader implications of student sacrifices. The findings reveal that these sacrifices are driven by a profound commitment to justice and human rights, and are influenced by the increasing availability of information, peer interactions, and personal convictions. The study also discusses the broader implications of this activism, comparing it to historical precedents and assessing its potential to influence policy and public opinion. The emotional and psychological toll on student activists is significant, but their sense of purpose and community support mitigates some of these challenges. However, the researchers call for acknowledging the broader Impact of these sacrifices on the future global movement of FreePalestine.
